My parents, Auke Bloembergen and Sophia Maria Quint, had four sons and two daughters. I am the second child, born on March 11, 1920, in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. My father, a chemical engineer, was an executive in a chemical fertilizer company. My mother, who had an advanced degree to teach French, devoted all her energies to rearing a large family.
Before I entered grade school, the family moved to Bilthoven, a residential suburb of Utrecht. We were brought up in the protestant work ethic, characteristic of the Dutch provinces. Intellectual pursuits were definitely encouraged. The way of life, however, was much more frugal than the family income would have dictated.
My parents made a rule that my siblings should tear me away from books at certain hours. The periods of relaxation were devoted to sports: canoing, sailing, swimming, rowing and skating on the Dutch waterways, as well as the competitive team sport of field hockey. I now attempt to keep the body fit by playing tennis, by hiking and by skiing.
Professor L.S. Ornstein taught the undergraduate physics course when I entered the

Dr. Bloembergen, an alumnus of the University of Utrecht, traveled to The Netherlands to participate in the dedication ceremonies and visit family. Research groups housed in the new Nicolaas Bloembergengebouw are investigating the development and application of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and mass spectrometry. The group also contributes to the development of NMR methodology and investigates novel NMR experiments and methods for structure refinement and for the quality assessment of protein NMR structures. Nicolaas Bloembergen, Professor of Optical Sciences, come to the Center of Optics Valley after more than 40 years at Harvard University, where he served as Gerhard Gade University Professor, inspiring two generations of physics students and nearly 60 PhD candidates.

Bloembergen, Nicolaas
(b. March 11, 1920, Dordrecht, Neth.), Dutch-born American physicist, corecipient with Arthur Leonard Schawlow of the United States and of Sweden of the 1981 Nobel Prize for Physics for their revolutionary spectroscopic studies of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter. Bloembergen made a pioneering use of lasers in these investigations. Bloembergen received undergraduate (1941) and graduate (1943) degrees from the University of Utrecht. In 1946 he entered Harvard University, where with Edward Purcell and Robert Pound he did fundamental research on nuclear magnetic resonance. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Leiden in 1948, he returned to Harvard, where he became a professor of applied physics in 1951 and Gerhard Gade university professor in 1980. He became a U.S. citizen in 1958. Bloembergen's early research on nuclear magnetic resonance led him to an interest in masers. He designed a three-stage crystal maser that was dramatically more powerful than earlier gaseous masers and that has become the most widely used microwave amplifier. Bloembergen then developed laser spectroscopy, which allows high-precision observations of atomic structure. His laser spectroscopic investigations led him in turn to formulate nonlinear optics, a new theoretical approach to the analysis of how electromagnetic radiation interacts with matter. Bloembergen's research in nonlinear optics helped procure him a share of the Nobel Prize.

Nicolaas Bloembergen, a Harvard University professor emeritus, joined the faculty as an unpaid professor at the University of Arizona last month. Bloembergen, 80, won the 1981 Nobel Prize in physics for his research in laser spectroscopy. The optical science center's other laureate, Willis Lamb - who has been at the UA since 1983 - won the Nobel prize in 1955 for physics. Lamb and Bloembergen have also both won the President's Medal of Science, the nation's highest scientific honor. "He works very well with both students and faculty," said James Wyant, director of the UA Optical Sciences Center. "(He's) just a very good guy to talk to, any problem you have." Bloembergen, a native of the Netherlands, came to Harvard after World War II. He earned his doctorate from the University of Leiden in his home country in 1948, and last year was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree by Harvard, where he had spent about half a century as a faculty member. He also holds honorary doctorates from seven other universities.

Basov, Nikolay Gennadiyevich Soviet physicist and Nobel Laureate. Basov helped to develop both the laser and the maser, for which he shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in physics with Soviet physicist Aleksandr Mikhailovich Prokhorov and American physicist Charles Hard Townes. Basov, together with his teacher Prokhorov, conducted groundbreaking research in quantum mechanics, which concerns the behavior of atoms at different energy levels. They first deduced that quantum mechanics permits the amplification of microwaves and light waves by inducing atoms to release energy. This helped them construct the theoretical basis of the process now called microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, or, more commonly, maser. The maser quickly found many applications for its ability to send strong microwaves in any direction and resulted in improvements in radar. The maser also provided the basis for an atomic clock that was far more accurate than any mechanical timepiece ever invented. Basov later helped develop the visible-light maser, or laser , which delivers infrared or visible light instead of microwaves. Both the maser and the laser can collect and amplify energy waves hundreds of times. They can also produce a beam with almost perfectly parallel light waves and little or no interference or static.

After surviving World War II in Holland, he came to America in the spring of 1946, walked into Professor Edward Purcell's office at Harvard University and requested the opportunity to do graduate work in the emerging field of nuclear magnetic resonance. This fateful step started a lifelong association with Harvard which continues to the present day. It also set the future pattern for his scientific work, which began with magnetic resonance and evolved in a natural way in quantum electronics, non-linear optics, and lasers. His Ph.D. thesis on nuclear magnetic relaxation became the classic Bloembergen, Pound and Purcell paper (BPP) in the
