66. Newsbulletin
Following is a list of UC nobel Prize winners as of October 1998 donald J. cram,1987 chemistry; Paul D. Boyer, 1997 chemistry; Louis J. Ignarro, 1998
http://www.lanl.gov/orgs/pa/News/101598.html
Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998 UC professor awarded Nobel Prize in chemistry Walter Kohn of the University of California at Santa Barbara and John Pople of Northwestern University are winners of the 1998 Nobel Prize in chemistry. They will share $978,000. "The laureates have each made pioneering contributions in developing methods that can be used for theoretical studies of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved," said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on making the announcement Tuesday. Kohn, a physicist, was cited for his development of density-functional theory the basis of many aspects of computational chemistry, in which the geometrical structure of molecules can be mapped and reactions predicted. Pople, a mathematician, received the award for his development of computational methods in quantum chemistry. His 1970 computer program, Gaussian, allows chemists to apply quantum calculations in making rapid, reasonably accurate estimates of molecular behavior. Improvements in the Gaussian program, the Nobel committee said, have been so dramatic that it "is now used by thousands of chemists in universities and commercial companies the world over." Kohn was the second UC professor this week to receive a Nobel Prize Louis Ignarro, a professor in the department of molecular and medical pharmacology at UCLA's School of Medicine, was co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The number of UC faculty who have received the Nobel Prize now stands at 34. No other public university system worldwide has won more Nobel prizes than the University of California.

Early Citations Mark 1987 Nobel
By PETER GWYNNE PHILADELPHIA—Nobel prizes in science normally recognize research of extraordinary excellence, as judged by literature citations to it and awards that have accumulated over a period of years. This year, however, the Nobel committee awarded the physics prize for recent research that illuminated the physical science community with the brilliance of a supernova. New physics laureates J. Georg Bednorz and K. Alex Milller, of IBM’s Zurich Research Labora tory, published their seminal paper on high-temperature superconducting ceramics in September 1986 in the German journal Zeitschrift für Physik B : Condensed Matter (vol. 64, 1986, p.189). The paper had been cited once by year’s end, and just five times during the first two months of this year, according to data gathered by the Institute for Scientific Information, which publishes THE SCIENTIST. However, once the physics community recognized the extraordinary promise of high-temperature superconductors, the paper’s citations increased exponentially, from 29 in March and April to 82 in May and June to 140 in July and August (see chart below). It is a buildup of extraordinary rapidity, matched only by a relatively few papers reporting such dramatic findings as pulsars, elementary particles and the AIDS virus. The seminal papers recognized by the Nobel committee in chemistry and medicine or physiology show a more normal citation history. M.I.T. immunologist Susumu Tonegawa’s paper on immunoglobin genes in the
