Remembered Present: A Biological Theory of Consciousness
by Gerald M. Edelman From Stuart Sutherland - The New York Times Book Review
Dr. Edelman's writing is unintelligible to many, if not most, neurophysiologists and psychologists. It could be that his theory is so novel that it is difficult to grasp, but he makes little effort at clarity, a duty that is incumbent on all scientists. Moreover, until he shows how this theory explains in detail concrete examples of behavior, it cannot be taken seriously. . . . In the absence of evidence, his attempt to correlate different parts of the brain with different kinds of consciousness is largely speculative. Were such evidence available, we would still be no closer to understanding how or why consciousness has arisen. It remains the ultimate mystery, perhaps one that will never be solved. Maybe Dr. Edelman should have taken a hint from Wittgenstein : 'Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must remain silent.' Synopsis
The Remembered Present , the author has extended these concepts to . . . complex behaviors, especially consciousness." Reviews
Nobel laureate Edelman (The Rockefeller U., The Neurosciences Institute) proposes a grand theory of consciousness, integrating findings in the neurosciences, anatomy, cell biology, and psychology to construct a detailed model of how we become aware of our own existence. Edelman's characterization of consciousness as biological and individual will find opposition from those having theories of the social construction of reality. Complex and difficult, but not arcane.

Bright Air, Brilliant Fire: On the Matter of the Mind
by Gerald M. Edelman When someone begins with a basic belief, a devoted a priori assumption that biology and the brain are the lowest common denominator of all sentience, the result is such a book as this - where complicated and pained efforts are taken to explain human consciousness, thought, and imagination as by-products of chemical reactions and electrical impulses - as a result of biology and "neural" evolution. Also, typical of modern "scientists", Darwin is dedicatedly believed and Darwin's theories are reorganized to apply to neurology, nerve formation, and brain development. How long before we are all walking around with microchip brain implants guaranteeing our tranquility, serenity, productivity, happiness and satisfaction? Reviews

"Strenuous" is how Nobelist ( Physiology or Medicine Customer Comments Revolutionary and On Track, wood_john_T@hotmail.com, February 18, 1999
Edelman is absolutely right to approach the problems of consciousness in the manner he does. Consciousness is a biological phenomena which can only be understood in terms of it's biological, evolutionary, and developmental context. The completion of Darwin's Program is a must if consciousness is to be integrated into the larger body of scientific knowledge that is biology. While the Theory of Neuronal Group Selection is only in it's tentative stages, the approach has shown a light on the path that may ultimately lead to a comprehensible theory that is consistent with the rest of the sciences. Gerald Edelman will be to future generations of neuroscientists and lay-persons alike what Charles Darwin is to us today.

Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
Premio Nobel

Francis Crick Critiques Gerald M. Edelman
Nobel Prize winner Francis Crick has taken to attacking a fellow laureate in public of late. Crick recently told a University of California, San Diego audience that a two-year-old book, Neural Darwinism, The Theory of Neuronal Group Selection (Basic Books, 1987) by Nobelist Gerald M. Edelman makes misleading claims for itself. Crick quoted Edelman’s description of the book as “a radically new view of the function of the brain and the nervous system.” Crick admits that the book contains “a number of sensible remarks and good ideas,” specifically citing Edelman’s theory that after neuronal connections are made at the initial stage they are not changed thereafter. But he went on to tell his UCSD audience that, “Readers should not be misled into surmising that since parts of the book are good, then the whole of it must be good. That is not the case.” The simulations used in the book “really are misleading,” he said, charging that at times they don’t prove the particular theory they are intended to buttress. Furthermore, Crick recommended that all references to Darwin be dropped and the theories be labeled “neural-Edelmanism.” Quipped Crick: “It is best not to drag in poor Darwin.” Evidently Edelman doesn’t want to be dragged into the fray either: Several phone calls to his office at Rockefeller University asking for his response to Crick’s caustic comments were not returned.

A New Scientific Approach To Solving An Age-Old Question How Does The Brain Gives Rise To Consciousness?
La Jolla, Calif., December 4, 1998 - Since the time of the ancient Greeks people have wondered how the brain, a three pound lump of spongy tissue, presents us with all that we are conscious of: what we see, hear, touch, smell, taste, think, feel, remember, desire, and dream. How is it that the grey matter of the brain gives us our subjective experience that by which the color red looks red and pain feels painful? Researchers at The Neurosciences Institute believe they have developed a new scientific approach for understanding this age-old question. Reported in the December 4, 1998 issue of Science magazine by authors Giulio Tononi and Nobel Laureate Gerald M. Edelman, the approach is based upon a number of Institute studies of the neural basis of consciousness. The studies have led to their new proposal about the properties of the neural substrate of consciousness the dynamic core hypothesis.

"The Brain"
Volume 127, Number 2, Spring 1998 One of the most significant human accomplishments of the past fifty years has also been arguably one of the least heralded. Most people with even a passing interest in science are aware of remarkable achievements of the last half-century across a horizon of inquiry stretching from genomes to galaxies. But there is generally little understanding of the tremendous strides that have been made in understanding the organ that has made these, and indeed all examples of human intellectual progress, possiblethe human brain. With "The Brain," its Spring 1998 issue, Daedalus has challenged fourteen world-acclaimed experts in the brain sciences to review the current status of their pathbreaking work for a general readership, and to point out the implications of what we are now learning about the structure and functioning of the human brainfrom the molecular to the systemic levelfor our understanding of what it means to be human. The results are surprising, provocative, and not infrequently unorthodox.
