appointed Eigen a Scientific Member in 1957 and head in 1964. In 1967 he was elected Managing Director of the Institute for a period of three years. At the same time he was appointed to the Scientific Council of the German Federal Republic.
Eigen's scientific development is reflected in the close on 100 papers he has published. The subject matter of these works ranges from the thermodynamic properties of water and aqueous solutions, and the theory of electrolytes, through thermal conductivity and sound absorption, to fast ionic reactions.
At the same time, however, his attention turned also to biochemical questions, which now claimed his chief interest. These questions ranged from hydrogen bridges of nucleic acids, through the dynamics of code transfer, to enzymes and lipid membranes. Biological control and regulation processes, and the problem of the storage of information in the central nervous system also occupy his attention. Practically every year he travels together with his friend and colleague Leo de Maeyer to Boston to discuss topics of common interest with American neurologists, biochemists, and biophysicists.

(b. May 9, 1927, Bochum, Ger.), German physicist who was corecipient, with R.G.W. Norrish and George Porter , of the 1967 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for work on extremely rapid chemical reactions. Eigen was able to study many extremely fast chemical reactions by a variety of methods that he introduced and which are called relaxation techniques. These involve the application of bursts of energy to a solution that briefly destroy its equilibrium before a new equilibrium is reached. Eigen studied what happened to the solution in the extremely brief interval between the two equilibria by means of absorption spectroscopy. Among specific topics thus investigated were the rate of hydrogen ion formation through dissociation in water, diffusion-controlled protolytic reactions, and the kinetics of keto-enol tautomerism.

Methods employing these "evolution machines" were developed by Manfred Eigen who received the Nobel Prize in 1967 for his research on very rapid chemical kinetics. Already at that time his scientific interest was focused almost exclusively on problems concerning evolution. In 1971 he published a pioneering paper dealing with two new concepts: the "self-organization of matter" and the "evolution of biological macromolecules"; these have since become classical concepts in the field of evolution. In 1992 he was awarded the prestigious Paul Ehrlich Prize for the theory presented in that paper and for its far-reaching consequences.

Eigen, Manfred German chemist who worked on extremely rapid chemical reactions (those taking less than 1 millisecond). From 1954 he developed a technique by which very short bursts of energy could be applied to solutions, disrupting their equilibrium and enabling him to investigate momentary reactions, such as the formation and dissociation of water. Nobel prize 1967.
Eigen investigated particularly very fast biochemical reactions that take place in the body. With his colleague Ruthild Winkler he tried to relate chance and chemistry in processes that could have led to the origin of life on Earth. Eigen theorized that in the 'primeval soup' of the early Earth, cycles of chemical reactions would have occurred, one reproducing nucleic acids and one reproducing proteins, and that life arose from a combination of these.

Koch is considered the founder of modern bacteriology. In the eighteen-eighties, the country doctor discovered the bacilli that caused tuberculosis and cholera. In a letter to Carl Zeiss he wrote, "A large part of my success I owe to your excellent microscopes". In 1904, he received the 10,000th Zeiss objective, a homogeneous immersion system, as a present. Robert Koch Richard Zsigmondy Richard Zsigmondy , Nobel Prize for Chemistry, 1925.
As a professor at Göttingen, Zsigmondy conducted pioneering research in colloid chemistry. He invented the ultramicroscope in 1903, and two types of membrane filters in 1918 and 1922. Ultramicroscopy after Siedentopf and Zsigmondy makes visible submicroscopic particles whose linear extension is below the microscope's resolution limit. Der Göttinger Professor führte bahnbrechende Arbeiten auf dem Gebiet der Kolloidchemie aus. Er erfand 1903 das Ultramikroskop, 1918 den Membranfilter und 1922 den Ultrafeinfilter. Die Spaltultramikroskopie
(nach Siedentopf/Zsigmondy) läßt winzig kleine Teilchen sichtbar werden, deren Linearausdehnung unter der Auflösungsgrenze liegt. Frits Zernike , Nobelpreis für Physik 1953.
Der niederländische Physiker entdeckte 1930 beim Experimentieren mit Reflektionsgittern, daß er die Phasenlage der einzelnen Lichtstrahlen beobachten konnte, und wollte diese Erkenntnis auf das Mikroskop übertragen. Zusammen mit Zeiss entwickelte er das erste Phasenkontrastmikroskop, 1936 als Prototyp hergestellt. Es ermöglichte ein Studium lebender Zellen, ohne sie durch chemische Färbung zu schädigen.
