Videos Statement of 100 Nobel Laureates OSLO, Norway-December 7, 2001 (OTVNewswire) At the Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium here yesterday celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize, 100 Nobel laureates have issued a brief but dire warning of the "profound dangers" facing the world. Their statement predicts that our security depends on immediate environmental and social reform. The following is the text of their statement: THE STATEMENT: The most profound danger to world peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust.

Many people throughout the world contributed to the international recognition of Croatia (January 15, 1992). We would like to present a list of 104 Nobel prize winners (in alphabetic order) who signed an appeal to stop the aggression of the Yugoslav Army on Croatia that started in 1991 (The New York Times, January 14th, 1992). We do this we the feeling of deepest gratitude.
An Appeal by 104 Nobel Laureates
    FOR PEACE IN CROATIA
During the past several weeks the Yugoslav Army has escalated its war against Croatia. Dozens of villages have been razed. Many historical monuments have been destroyed. Several cities, including Croatia's capital of Zagreb, have been bombed. Over 2,000* people have been killed. The undeclared war has already produced more than 100,000* refugees. The violence and destruction unleashed in Croatia is on a scale unknown in Europe since the Second World War. Innocent civilians are massacred. Hospitals and places of worship are destroyed. Conscience demands that we raise our voices against this senseless war.
    • We appeal to the Western and Eastern governments to stop the Yugoslav Army wanton destruction.

-Special Event to Be Broadcast Worldwide Via Internet-
    Berlin, GERMANY, October 16, 2001
Five Nobel Prize Laureates, whose collective work has changed the course of human medicine, will speak at a scientific celebration in Berlin, Germany on October 20, 2001. This unique event commemorates the 100th anniversary of immunology pioneer Emil von Behring’s receipt of the first Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work developing serum therapy, especially its application against diphtheria. The event is being organized by Aventis Behring, a global leader in the plasma protein industry, the Robert Koch Institute, the chief institute for research and control of infectious diseases in Germany, and the Charité, the Berlin University Hospital which is part of the Medical Department of Humboldt University. Featured is a half-day of 30-minute lectures given by five Nobel Prize Laureates, each a visionary in his field. The German Minister for Science and Research, Edelgard Bulmahn, will deliver the opening remarks, followed by Professor Wolfgang Eckart of the University of Heidelberg, who will provide historical background and perspective on Emil von Behring and the work that earned him the first Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1901. The Laureates include:
    • Günter Blobel, M.D., Ph.D. (Rockefeller University in New York, NY) who received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1999 for his work on protein transport and localization across cellular membranes

Those are the words that kept coming up in conversation with students who attended the 52nd Meeting of the Nobel Laureates And yet these dreams and much more came true this year, and have come true each summer for hundreds of students, on the island of Lindau, an enchanting medieval city located in Lake Constance. Lindau has been the unusual setting for bringing together Nobel Laureates and students since 1951, when the first meeting was held under the auspices of Count Lennart Bernadotte. This year's meeting attracted more than 600 undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellowsalmost all of them chemistry students and fellowsand 17 Nobel Laureates. Typically, the laureates are invited to Lindau in three-year cycles alternating among physicists, chemists, and medical scientists.

    The Dispossessed
    by 100 Nobel Laureates
The following statement was released on December 7, 2001, by 100 Nobel Prize winners to coincide with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first Nobel prizes. Although the statement began circulating among the laureates last summer, most of them signed it after September 11. The most profound danger to world Peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust. It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor. The only hope for the future lies in cooperative international action, legitimized by democracy. It is time to turn our backs on the unilateral search for security, in which we seek to shelter behind walls. Instead, we must persist in the quest for united action to counter both global warming and a weaponized world.
