Ignore the need for that research and we shall lose the cures that we are entitled to expect in the next 50 years for illnesses that afflict hundreds of millions of people such as cancer, heart disease, viral diseases, malaria, schistosomiasis and sickle cell anaemia." - Sir John Vane, Nobel Prizewinner 1982 Schack August Steenberger KROGH - discovers the mechanism controlling the capillary blood vessels. Search Universiteit Leiden Universiteit Leiden is the oldest university in the Netherlands. In 1574, during the 'Eighty Years War' against the Spanish empire, William of Orange took the first step towards establishing the University, as a reward for the town's brave resistance against the Spanish besiegers. The University was founded on February 8, 1575, and was later granted the motto Praesidium Libertatis, or bastion of liberty. The emblem of Leiden University is not a coat of arms, but a seal. Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, is surrounded by the coat of arms of Holland, of Orange-Nassau, as borne by Prince William I, and of the town of Leiden. Throughout the centuries many great scholars and scientists have brought fame and respect to Leiden University. During the early centuries of its existence, many eminent scholars taught at the University: the humanists Justus Lipsius and Josephus Scaliger, the mathematician Willibrord Snellius and the physician Herman Boerhaave. In the Nineteenth Century the liberal statesman Johan Rudolph Thorbecke drafted the constitution of 1848 during his years in Leiden, and Mathias de Vries fathered Dutch linguistics.

Picture-In-Picture, scrolling stock ticker claimed to improve care OMAHA, NEOn Tuesday, Synesis, the nation's largest manufacturer of medical monitoring devices, announced plans to release a new cardiac monitor, tentatively dubbed the "iCU-Box," for use in critical care and telemetry settings. Brief History of EKG's and Telemetry Rudolph von Koelliker and Heinrich Muller record the first action potential. Willem Einthoven introduces the term 'electrokardiogram' at a meeting of the Dutch Medical Association but later claims that Augustus Waller was first to use the term. In the same year, Abner Einthoven invents baseball in Cooperstown, NY. Einthoven transmits electrocardiograms from his hospital to his laboratory 1.5 km away via Palm Pilot. On March 22 the first 'telekardiogram' is captured; on March 23, an overly neurotic attending physician reminds medical students that the proper American term for EKG is "ECG" Boston Red Sox win their last World Series. In the years to follow, demoralized Boston fans divert their hopes and aspirations towards becoming groundbreaking cardiology researchers instead.
