When I commenced my own studies on vitreous semiconductors, in the mid 1960's, Mott at the Cavendish Laboratory and his counterpart Kolomiets in Leningrad towered over the field. Sir Nevill's contributions to the theory of disordered semiconductors were, of course, those for which he gained his Nobel Prize in Physics, in 1977. Typically, he questioned his eligibility for the award, suggesting that he had not achieved a major breakthrough such as the "invention" of quantum mechanics or the development of a new theory of subatomic particles. Few would agree, feeling that his overall contribution to solid state physics has rarely, if ever, been surpassed.

(p. 297-298) The same thing happened: something would look good at first and then turn out to be horrifying. For example, there was book that started out with four pictures: first there was a wind-up toy; then there was an automobile; then there was a boy riding a bicycle; then there was something else. And underneath each picture it said, "What makes it go?" (p. 301) "By the way, whenever our commission had a meeting, there were book publishers entertaining curriculum commission members by taking them to lunch and talking to them about their books. Feynman, Richard P(hillips)
US physicist whose work laid the foundations of quantum electrodynamics. For his work on the theory of radiation he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics 1965 with Julian Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonaga (1906-1979). He also contributed to many aspects of particle physics, including quark theory and the nature of the weak nuclear force.
For his work on quantum electrodynamics, he developed a simple and elegant system of Feynman diagrams to represent interactions between particles and how they moved from one space-time point to another. He had rules for calculating the probability associated with each diagram.
His other major discoveries are the theory of superfluidity (frictionless flow) in liquid helium, developed in the early 1950s; his work on the weak interaction (with US physicist Murray Gell-Mann ) and the strong force; and his prediction that the proton and neutron are not elementary particles. Both particles are now known to be composed of quarks.
Feynman was born in New York and studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at Princeton. During World War II, he worked at Los Alamos, New Mexico, on the behaviour of neutrons in atomic explosions. Feynman was professor of theoretical physics at Caltech (California Institute of Technology) from 1950 until his death.

Feynman (1918-1988) on understanding of the nature The Messenger Lectures have taken place annually at Cornell since 1924, when H.J.Messenger, a graduate and professor of mathematics, gave a sum of money to encourage eminent personalities from anywhere in the world to visit Cornell and talk to the students. In establishing the fund for the lectures Messenger specified that it is "to provide a course on the evolution of civilization for the special purpose of rising the moral standard of our political, business and social life".
In November 1964 Richard P. Feynman, one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists, laureate of Nobel prize, and distinguished educator, was invited to the lectures.
This is an excerpt from his lectures taken from "The Character of Physical Laws" by Richard P. Feynman, MIT Press, 1967:
...To summarize, I would use the words of Jeans, who said that "the Great Architect seems to be a mathematician". To those who do not know mathematics it is difficult to get across a real feeling as to the beauty, the deepest beauty, of nature. C.P. Snow talked about two cultures. I really think that those two cultures separate people who have and people who have not had this experience of understanding mathematics well enough to appreciate nature once.
It is too bad that it has to be mathematics, and that mathematics is hard for some people. It is reputed - I do not know if it is true - that when one of the kings was trying to learn geometry from Euclid he complained that it was difficult. And Euclid said, "There is no royal road to geometry". And there is no royal road. Physicists cannot make a conversion to any other language. If you want to learn about nature, to appreciate nature, it is necessary to understand the language that she speaks in. She offers her information only in one form; we are not so unhumble as to demand that she change before we pay any attention.

From 1983 to 1986, the legendary physicist and teacher Richard Feynman gave a course at Caltech called "Potentialities and Limitations of Computing Machines." Although the lectures are over ten years old, most of the material is timeless and presents a "Feynmanesque" overview of many standard and some not-so-standard topics in computer science. These include computability, Turing machines (or as Feynman said, "Mr. Turing's machines"), information theory, Shannon's Theorem, reversible computation, the thermodynamics of computation, the quantum limits to computation, and the physics of VLSI devices. Taken together, these lectures represent a unique exploration of the fundamental limitations of digital computers.
Feynman's philosophy of learning and discovery comes through strongly in these lectures. He constantly points out the benefits of playing around with concepts and working out solutions to problems on your own-before looking at the back of the book for the answers. As Feynman says in the lectures: "If you keep proving stuff that others have done, getting confidence, increasing complexities of your solutions-for the fun of it-then one day you'll turn around and discovers that nobody actually did that one! And that's the way to become a computer scientist."

    "In case you are beginning to believe that some of the things I said before are true because I am a scientist and according to the brochure that you got I won some awards and so forth, instead of your looking at the ideas themselves and judging them directlyin other words, you have some feeling toward authorityI will get rid of that tonight. I dedicate this lecture to showing what ridiculous conclusions and rare statements such a man as myself can make. I wish, therefore, to destroy any image of authority that has previously been generated." (p. 61) The Meaning of It All is a collection of three lectures Feynman gave in 1963. Although the words are now oldmost of the ideas presented are timeless. The first lecture, entitled The Uncertainty of Science , deals with the beautifully undogmatic nature of the scientific method. Feynman discusses how we should apply this 'uncertainty principle' to more aspects of life if we are to find better ways to live and improve life. New ideas don't blossom in an environment that encourages conformity and a reliance on tradition. Good ideas aren't found from these new ideas unless some sort of scientific analysis is performed. The Uncertainty of Values probes the religious history of morality and how people can now accept the good aspects of religious values while rejecting the mythological elements of traditional religions. In fact, people can have better values by not forcing their actions into any particular religious vacuum. In this section, Feynman shows that science doesn't provide a value system, but science can provide a starting point which will be beneficial when we are faced with difficult choices to make since it can more accurately determine the situation involved.

    Winners of the 1999 Feynman Prizes
    The 1999 Feynman Prizes in Nanotechnology were awarded during the Seventh Foresight Conference on Molecular Nanotechnology to Phaedon Avouris of IBM for experimental work , and to a team led by William A. Goddard III at Caltech for theoretical work Dr. Avouris Professor William Goddard Dr. Tahir Cagin , and Ms. Yue Qi some of the most advanced modeling possible today. The Prizes include a cash award of $5000 per team. They are named in honor of the late Nobel Prizewinning physicist Richard Feynman, whose 1959 talk "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom" inspired many researchers to pursue the ultimate in miniaturization.
