Xiangdong Shi's Academic Ancestral Tree
  • My Ph.D. (Chicago, 1994) advisor is David N. Schramm (a.k.a. Schrambo) (1945 - 1997), the 1971 U.S. National Greco-Roman Wrestling Champion, the mountaineer and pilot, who was also a famous astrophysicist. His major contribution to astrophysics, IMO, is his study of light element nucleosynthesis in Big Bang and in stars, as well as its implications on particle physics.
  • David Schramm's Ph.D. (Caltech, 1971) advisors are Gerold Wasserberg and Nobel laureate William Fowler (1911 - 1995). Both are nuclear physicists. Fowler won Nobel Prize in 1983 because he pointed out (along with the Burbidges and Sir Fred Hoyle) that elements from carbon to uranium were synthesized in stars.
  • Gerold Wasserberg's Ph.D. (Unknown yet) advisor is Harold C. Urey (1893 - 1981). Urey was a winner of the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1934, for his discovery of deuterium.
William Fowler's Ph.D. (Caltech, 1936) advisor is Charles. C. Lauritsen (1892 - 1968), one of the American pioneers of nuclear physics.
  • Harold Urey's Ph.D. (Berkeley, 1923) advisor is chemist

Martinus J.G. Veltman
