NOBEL PRIZE WINNER
February 27, 2001
Ray Suarez talks with Chinese-born author Gao Xingjian, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Literature.
RAY SUAREZ: The most recent Nobel Prize for literature marked the first in the awards history; it was given to a writer working in Chinese. Gao Xingjian is a painter and playwright, as well as novelist. He has been living in France since 1987, and the Nobel Prize only brought fresh denunciation from the government in Beijing. Gao Zingjian's first work published in English in America is called "Soul Mountain." His translator for the interview, Mabel Lee, also translated "Soul Mountain" from Chinese.
Nobel Laureate Gao Xingjian, welcome. RAY SUAREZ: How has winning the Nobel Prize changed your life? GAO XINGJIAN: (speaking through interpreter) This has had a great impact on my life. I was quite busy before, but it was a very quiet and ordered life. But after the announcement, for four months I've been dealing with media all the time. And I have no time for writing. So this is the huge change. RAY SUAREZ: Is it also a gift at the same time, because it has the possibility of bringing new audiences to your work?

Among Gao's best known works is Soul Mountain , the story of a journey through the remote Chinese countryside in a search for roots, inner peace and liberty.

Exiled Chinese Nobel-winning writer Gao Xingjian visits Hong Kong By MARGARET WONG, Associated Press HONG KONG (January 29, 2001 11:19 a.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com ) - An exiled Chinese writer arrived Monday in Hong Kong for the first time since winning the Nobel literature prize last year, but he steered clear of politics at the start of a three-day visit. Gao Xingjian, the first Chinese-born Nobel literature laureate, greeted friends and reporters with smiles but no comment on whether he had been under any political pressure. "We'll discuss things during the lectures," said Gao, who will speak at two local universities Tuesday and Wednesday before flying to Taiwan on Thursday. Pro-Beijing forces in Hong Kong have warned that Gao should stick to literature and avoid criticizing Beijing's alleged oppression while he is in town, a little more than two weeks after an international conference by the Falun Gong meditation sect stirred controversy here. Asked repeatedly whether he had felt any political pressure, Gao avoided the questions, holding up his hands to try to stop them. Supporters receiving Gao at the airport included Liu Zaifu, a renowned Chinese intellectual based in the United States, and Liu's wife, Fei Ya.

Gao Xingjian, the Nobel Laureate in Literature 2000 and author of Soul Mountain and One Man's Bible , will make a three-day visit to Hong Kong in January 2001. Arriving on 29 January, Mr. Gao will visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 30 January where he will deliver a public lecture and give a press conference afterwards. On 31 January, he will visit the City University of Hong Kong and give another talk in the morning, and also attend a reception hosted by Ming Pao Enterprise Corporation Limited in the afternoon. Mr Gao will leave for Taiwan on 1 February. Details of his visit will be announced later. While this will be his first visit to Hong Kong since receiving the Nobel Prize, Mr. Gao has been well-known in local cultural and academic circles ever since the late eighties, when several of his plays were staged here. He first visited Hong Kong in 1993 at the invitation of the Institute of Chinese Studies of The Chinese University of Hong Kong to deliver the first Sin Wai Kin Lecture on Contemporary Chinese Culture, and he directed the premier of his play The Other Shore at the Academy of Performing Arts in 1995. The play was subsequently translated into English by Professor Fong Chee Fun of CUHK, who became one of his nominators for the Nobel Prize this year. A number of his works in Chinese have been published here in Hong Kong, and his ink-brush paintings were frequently exhibited in a local art gallery. It is therefore expected that Mr. Gao's visit will draw a great deal of attention and publicity.

A Conference on Chinese Business Management was jointly organized by the Committee on China Research and Development (CCRD)/The Center for Chinese Business Studies (CCBS) of CUHK's Faculty of Business Administration and the Hang Lung Center for Organizational Research (HLCOR) of HKUST's School of Business on December 11-12, 2000 at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The conference aims at bringing the expertise from the business faculties of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology together and explores the related topics and issues on Chinese business management. Papers on various areas such as organizational structure, state enterprise reform, potential impact of foreign direct investment on China's telecommunications industry, management of high technology industries etc. will be presented during the two-day conference. China's accession to the WTO will facilitate further liberalization and opening of its economy. This presents a challenge and a good opportunity for all other Chinese economies, Hong Kong in particular. The Faculty of Business Administration at CUHK has further identified its strategic direction in China's research and development where we intend to further consolidate our existing and proposed China related research in the business sector and to enhance our international reputation.

The ban on Gao's work in China remains in force
By Duncan Hewitt in Shanghai The Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to a Chinese writer for the first time last month, but official reaction in China itself has been virtually non-existent. During the 1980s, it often seemed that Chinese intellectuals did little else but sit around debating why a Chinese writer had never won the Nobel prize, and demanding that this state of affairs must change. It was seen as a matter of national pride, at a time when China's intellectuals were emerging from the Cultural Revolution and again seeking to make their voices heard to the world. One key participant in that period of idealistic intellectual ferment was Gao Xingjian, whose plays, staged in China's major cities in the mid 80s, were seen as groundbreaking forays into the hitherto unknown territory of existentialism. A decade and a half later, Gao Xingjian has finally fulfilled the dream.

Gao Xingjian: The First Chinese Nobel Prize Winner for Literature Marianne Gao Xingjian (Chinese name), a 60-year-old novelist, playwright, and artist was recently awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his novel Soul Mountain , a unique piece based on his travels over 15,000 kilometers in South-Western China for ten months in 1983. This work, described as a quest for inner peace and freedom, was highly praised for its sharp insights, precise language, and inspiring thoughts. Gao is the first Chinese winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Born in 1940 in the province of Jiang Shi, he was severely oppressed during the Cultural Revolution because of his outspokenness, and in 1988, in order to ¡§seek genuine peace of mind,¡¨ he moved to France and where he has writing ever since. He is highly recognized by French literary circles and his books are also best-sellers there. Generally, most Chinese people feel proud of him, since no Chinese writer has ever been awarded this great honor. The news, however, embarrassed the Beijing government. While still in China Gao often wrote plays or novels opposing Communism and sometimes even opposing the government directly.
