Nobel winner affirms the 'self':
Gao remains apolitical in his approach to the creative enterprise

"Not only do I not write to change society," the Chinese expatriate said, "but I feel an individual could not do so anyway." (Staff photo by Justin Ide) During the Cultural Revolution - the decade of Maoist reform that, among other things, pilloried Chinese intellectuals and sent many to the countryside for "re-education" through hard labor - author Gao Xingjian was among those "sent down" to live the life of a peasant. He wrote in secret, at night. According to one biography, he "wrap[ped] his manuscripts in plastic and bur[ied] them in the earth floor under the heavy water urn in his hut." At one point he was forced to burn "kilos and kilos" of manuscripts - burn them in secret, in fear for his life, a logistically maddening process of keeping a flame alight without creating any smoke that would give him away.

Source: Central News Agency ao Xingjian, winner of the Nobel Prize in literature, arrived in Taipei on Sunday to prepare to stage one of his plays in Taiwan at the end of the year.
Gao has reportedly put a lot of time and effort into his play Snow in August , in preparation for bringing it to the stage. His desire to stage the play in Taiwan has won the support of the Council for Cultural Planning and Development.
During his last trip to Taiwan in September 2001, several of the main characters for the play were cast. Well-known stage performer Wu Hsin-kuo will play a Buddhist master. Students from National Taiwan Junior College of Performing Arts and National Kuo-Kuang Chinese Opera Company will also perform in the play.
Gao originally wanted Tan Dun, noted mainland China-born composer most famous in the West for his score of the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , to write the music for Snow in August , but Tan's schedule would not permit it. Xi Shuya will instead write the music. Tan won an Oscar for his score in the Taiwan-born director Ang Lee's film.

Middlemarch A piece of literary work that is set in a certain political climate always runs into the danger of being taken as a representation of a certain culture at a certain time. It may seem absurd, but that is how it often is. Reviewing a literary work that spans a whole or part of a calamitous life is a precarious process. One is posed with the dilemma of whether one is to review it from the perspective of the writing or the philosophical, emotional and spiritual journey that the writer has gone through. In this case, I refer to the Nobel laureate Gao Xingjian's latest novel, One Man's Bible , which is a fictionalized account of his life just before and during the Cultural Revolution in China. One Man's Bible is one man's journey in search of freedom, and ultimately, an ordinary life, as Gao says repeatedly through the book. To be left alone to do the things that one really wants, to lead what one perceives as an ordinary life, is too high a demand in a totalitarian regime, as it was during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s China. The book relates, in fictional form, Gao's own participation in the Revolution and his rejection of its goals. In order to speak from the distance of an observer, he travels between the "he" of the past and 'you' of the present.

    EDEBÝYAT
    Edebiyat Nobel’inde bir ilk!
Ýlk defa bir Çinli yazar Nobel Edebiyat Ödülü’nün sahibi oldu. Ýsveç Akademisi Nobel Komitesi, “Derinlikli kavrayýþý ve dili kullanmadaki ustalýðý” nedeniyle Çinli yazar Gao Xingjian’a 2000 yýlýnýn Nobel Edebiyat Ödülü’nü layýk gördüðünü açýkladý.

October 13, 2000 STOCKHOLM (AP) - Dissident Chinese writer Gao Xingjian, who fled his native country after a play was banned, won the Nobel Prize in literature Thursday for writings about the struggle of the individual that have opened new paths for Chinese literature.
The Swedish Academy cited Gao, 60, for his "bitter insights and linguistic ingenuity."
Gao, 60, who left his home in eastern China in 1987 and settled in Paris the following year as a political refugee, was the first Chinese writer to receive the prestigious literature prize.
"In the writing of Gao Xingjian literature is born anew from the struggle of the individual to survive the history of the masses," the academy said in its citation. "He is a perspicacious skeptic who makes no claim to be able to explain the world. He asserts that he has found freedom only in writing."
None of his plays have been performed in China since 1986, when his work "The Other Shore" was banned. He left China in 1987 and settled in Paris the following year as a political refugee.
