Aftermath of the Nobel Prize 2000 by Julia Lovell Modern Chinese Literature and Culture , vol. 14, no. 2, pp.1-50 On 12 October 2000, when Gao Xingjian, a novelist and playwright born in China, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, China's century-long quest for Nobel glory finally came to an end. Chinese intellectuals and politicians had worried for decades over when a Nobel Literature Prize would come to China, particularly since the mid-1980s when the search for a Nobel Prize was promoted to the level of an official policy issue and Nobel anxiety attained the status of a "complex" (Nuobeier qingjie) amongst writers, critics and academics. However, the lack of a Chinese laureate was now, it seemed, resolved and the mystique of the prize dispelled: Chinese literature could live happily ever after. Reactions to Gao's prize across the global Chinese community, and particularly in the Mainland, immediately refuted such hopes, as rumors and accusations of politicization began to circulate. This essay explores the historical and cultural background to the Chinese "Nobel Complex," examines the significance of Gao's prize in the contemporary world literary economy, and analyses reactions to the award in Mainland China for the light they shed on the links between modern Chinese literary intellectuals, politics and national identity.

[LatelineNews: 2001-2-12] BEIJING - Breaking with the Chinese media's official silence over Nobel prize winning author Gao Xingjian , a state newspaper Sunday called him an ``awful writer'' and said honoring him with the prize was ``ludicrous.'' The Yangcheng Evening News' attack marked a rare discussion of Gao in the Chinese press. China's communist government, which considers Gao an exiled dissident and bans his works, ignored his winning of the prize last October and no mention of it appeared in the state controlled media. In its lengthy criticism of the novel ``Soul Mountain,'' considered one of Gao's signature works, the Yangcheng assailed Gao's writing as simplistic and disappointing.

He received a degree in French and literature at the Beijing Foreign Languages Institute in 1962. During the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), Gao was sent to a re-education camp where he spent six years at hard labor. Once released, he began writing essays, plays and short stories. After Gao was mistakenly diagnosed with lung cancer in 1982, he proceeded upon a 10 month walking tour along the Yangtze River that served as the inspiration of his novel Soul Mountain.

(facing page) Gao Xingjian's lifelong dream of seeing his Snow in August produced on the stage is soon to become a reality. The play Snow in August is based on the legend of how Huineng, sixth patriarch of the Chan school of Chinese Buddhism, came to inherit the robe and begging bowl of the fifth patriarch. (right) Gao Xingjian's inkwash painting Diansa (Splattering) is highly acclaimed in artistic circles. It reflects the same spiritual depth as his novel Soul Mountain and his play Snow in August. Gao Xingjian, the first person of Chinese ancestry to ever win the Nobel Prize in Literature, has said that he has had three "crazy wishes" in his life. His first crazy wish was to win the Nobel Prize, which came true two years ago. His second crazy wish was to paint a mural on the wall of a large church, which he has been commissioned to do and is presently bringing to completion. And his third crazy wish was to have Snow in August staged, a project which has now been launched with the strong backing of the ROC Council for Cultural Affairs, with casting of the players and sourcing of other talents already under way. For the purpose of producing this work, Gao Xingjian will come to Taiwan for the third time this year on September 14, and will stay here a full three months, in order to personally direct and polish the presentation, the formal staging of which is scheduled for the end of this year.
