matrix mechanics . This new quantum mechanics could explain several of the newly discovered atomic phenomena. Heisenberg continued working on his new theory over the next year.
In early 1926, the Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger proposed another quantum mechanics, the wave mechanics . Matrix mechanics was too abstract to be of any help in visualizing atomic events, whereas wave mechanics consisted of much simpler mathematics and could be easily visualized. Therefore, most physicists readily accepted wave mechanics. Subsequently Schrödinger showed that matrix and wave mechanics were mathematically equivalent. Yet he claimed that wave mechanics was superior to matrix mechanics and this angered Heisenberg. The two met in Copenhagen and had heated debates. The debates only proved that neither of the two theories was complete. Both groups began a search for the physical meaning of their respective equations. This search led to the discovery of the Uncertainty Principle by Heisenberg, and the Copenhagen Interpretation. Uncertainty Principle
it is impossible to determine exactly both the position and the momentum of a particle at the same time . These uncertainties in the measurements are inherent in nature and therefore have profound scientific and philosophical implications; the very notions of causality and the deterministic view of the world are brought into question. Therefore, this principle is also called the principle of indeterminacy.

Werner Karl Heisenberg was one of those rare geniuses who dared to overturn all the opinions sacredly held hitherto, and whose influence is felt much beyond their narrow field of work. His Uncertainty Principle is the cornerstone of quantum physics. This theory shook science out of its arrogant complacency by questioning its basic premises of causality and determinism, and it also blurred the boundary between physics and philosophy. He was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize for Physics for this spectacular work that he did while still in his mid-twenties. A brilliant academician with international exposure, he was a giant among those who were suppose to have unraveled the mysteries of the atom. and to help mankind search alternative energy forms. He was considered to be a controversial personality. His knowledge was suspected as Germany under Hitler was unable to build an atomic bomb. Germans then considered him to be a betrayer as he and his team of scientists could not meet the German atomic aspirations. But he had always been a fervent nationalist inspite of all the indignities and restrictions that had been imposed upon, by the Nazis. Read more about this brilliant personality. Werner Heisenberg: Physics and Philosophy
Next up in the series of books by Nobel Prize-winning physicists [nobel.se] is Werner Heisenberg [thocp.net] with his "Physics and Philosophy: The Revolution in Modern Science" from 1958. The book was presented as Gifford-lectures at St. Andrew's in 1955-56, was Heisenberg's answer to Einstein's (and others') critique towards his uncertainty principle and quantum theory, and has since risen to a classic of "popular science". Personally I was enthusiastic about the detailed description of the Copenhagen interpretation and its benefits. Especially since the book was written in the mid-50s. Yet another great book about the history of quantum physics...

T he man who headed the atomic bomb project for Adolf Hitler was Werner Heisenberg. But before that, Heisenberg won the Nobel Prize for his theory of quantum mechanics, which he published at the ripe old age of 23. Here's how this genius wound up trying to build atomic weapons for the Third Reich:
In 1926 he was appointed Lecturer in Theoretical Physics at the University of Copenhagen under Niels Bohr and in 1927, when he was only 26, he was appointed Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Leipzig. With this kind of training it's no wonder that in 1941 when he was appointed Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics, the Nazi leadership tapped him to head their A-Bomb project. Fortunately for the Allies, Einstein, Bohr, and other scientists who had defected to the Allied side succeeded in perfecting the weapon first.
Like Werner von Braun, Heisenberg was too valuable to the postwar allies to be considered a war criminal. Instead he lectured in Cambridge, the US, and Scotland and lived on to play his beloved piano with his wife and seven children.

Werner Heisenberg was born on 5th December, 1901, at Würzburg. He was the son of Dr. August Heisenberg and his wife Annie Wecklein. His father later became Professor of the Middle and Modern Greek languages in the University of Munich . It was probably due to his influence that Heisenberg remarked, when the Japanese physicist Yukawa discovered the particle now known as the meson and the term "mesotron" was proposed for it, that the Greek word "mesos" has no "tr" in it, with the result that the name "mesotron" was changed to "meson".
Heisenberg went to the Maximilian school at Munich until 1920, when he went to the University of Munich to study physics under Sommerfeld, Wien, Pringsheim, and Rosenthal. During the winter of 1922-1923 he went to Göttingen to study physics under

Prior to World War II, it was common for many of these individuals to collaborate on some of the most important discoveries of the time. However, when Hitler rose to power in the early 30's, many of those deemed "non-Aryan" made their way to America and played a prominent role in the Manhattan Project. Feature: December 2001 Some 100 years after the father of the uncertainty principle was born, historians of science continue to debate the role that Werner Heisenberg played during the Second World War.
Uncertain history
Read any account of the development of physics in the early 20th century and you will almost certainly discover that a stay in Germany was de rigueur for any aspiring young physicist. One German physicist who became famous as the teacher of a generation of outstanding pupils was Arnold Sommerfeld. In the summer of 1922, shortly after the young Werner Heisenberg came under his tutelage, Sommerfeld wrote to Paul Epstein, a former student who had since become professor of theoretical physics at the California Institute of Technology: "I expect enormous achievements by Heisenberg, who I think is the most gifted one among all my pupils, including Debye and Pauli." Just 10 years later, Heisenberg was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for the "creation of quantum mechanics". The Nobel committee summed up Heisenberg's merits in a nutshell. But why is Heisenberg still controversial 100 years after his birth? In his recent monograph
