Gerhard Herzberg Dr. Herzberg was born and educated in Germany which he left in 1935 to teach at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1945 he left for the Yerkes Observatory in Chicago seeking better research opportunities until 1948 when he returned to join the staff of the National Research Council. Here he became director of physics from 1949-1969, and worked with the NRC president to establish NRC's postwar reputation as a scientific "centre of excellence". Herzberg's field of research was molecular spectroscopy. This entails the analysis of the spectra of molecules in order to determine their structure. Herzberg's research focussed largely on free radicals -intermediates of chemical reactions that last only microseconds under laboratory conditions, but much longer in interstellar space. He worked to develop new methods for their spectroscopic analysis, and published over 200 scientific papers in the course of his career. Dr. Herzberg was awarded many honours, including fellowship in the Royal Society of London (1951), the Order of Canada and the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1971), and the reorganization of the astronomy and spectroscopy units of the NRC in 1975 as the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics in his honour. N. A. Narasimham and S. A. Ahmad Gerhard Herzberg, the most distinguished spectroscopist of the present century, passed away at his home in Rockcliff, Ontario, Canada on 3 March 1999. He is widely known as the Father of Modern Molecular Spectroscopy, in recognition of which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1971. and observed that nitrogen nuclei follow Bose statistics which meant that electrons are not present in the nitrogen nucleus, contrary to the prevailing belief at that time. The discovery of neutron later clearly showed that only neutrons and protons occur inside the nucleus, as postulated by Heisenberg. Later in September 1929, he went to Bristol at the invitation of Lennard-Jones to have discussions with him on molecular orbital theory and to take spectra of some diatomic molecules. His visit coincided with the Faraday Society Discussions on Molecular Spectra and Molecular Structure; this provided him the opportunity of listening to the lectures from O. W. Richardson, C. V. Raman, R. T. Birge and J. Lecomte and interacting with them. He was very much impressed by Raman and used to meet him often during Faraday Society meetings. Herzberg studied the spectra of P , where he observed an interesting case of predissociation and similar one in N , which provided clear cut dissociation limits.

In his later years Nobel was horrified to see his invention and variations of it used mainly in guns and bombs to kill millions of people. To rectify this, he willed his vast fortune to be used to fund six annual cash prizes to men and women who made outstanding contributions that enriched human life in the fields of chemistry, physics, medicine, literature, economics, and peace. The Nobel Prize Laureates each receive about one million dollars. There have been ten Canadians to win a Nobel Prize in the sciences. Larger Version As part of the University’s 90 th anniversary celebrations, a Nobel Plaza, honouring the two laureates connected to the U of S, was constructed during the summer of 1997.  The project was funded by the Meewasin Foundation and designed in partnership with the University.  Two bronze plaques dedicated to the accomplishments of Gerhard Herzberg , member of faculty from 1935 to 1945, and Henry Taube, a graduate (BSc. 1935, MSc. 1937), were unveiled in a dedication ceremony on October 24.  The Plaza, which replaced the parking lot on the bowl side of the College Building, was designed to have the minimal visual impact on the front facade of the College Building, which had previously been declared a Larger Version provincial  heritage site.  The Plaza consists of a pedestrian concourse with a stone clad speaker’s podium faced with bronze plaques.    This not the first time the two men had been honoured by the U of S.  Drs. Herzberg and Taube had each received honorary degrees from the U of S, the former in 1953 and the latter in 1973.  Herzberg’s 1971 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for “his contributions to the knowledge of electronic structure properties of molecules, particularly free radicals.”  Taube’s 1983 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded “for his studies of the mechanisms of electron transfer reactions particularly of metal complexes.”

    HOME INTRODUCTION UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES
1935: Gerhard Herzberg arrives at the University
J.W.T. Spinks said he often pinched himself “to reassure myself that I had been so lucky.”  The source of his good fortune was Dr. Gerhard Herzberg, who had agreed to let Spinks spend 1933-1934 in his laboratory in Darmstadt, Germany.  For Spinks, the situation “was just about ideal” – noting, with understatement, that “Herzberg did very nice experimental work in spectroscopy.” But the situation in Germany for Herzberg was becoming increasingly untenable: his wife, Louise, was Jewish.  This was, as President Walter Murray ironically noted, “a misfortune, according to Hitler’s standards.”  Efforts were begun to find Herzberg a position outside of Germany. Murray wrote his colleagues in Toronto and at the National Research Council in Ottawa to see if they had openings.  “Should neither of you feel inclined to invite him to come,” Murray stated, “we would do so with joy.”  It was, as Spinks later noted, an interesting claim, given that “Murray knew that the bulk of the University assets in 1935 consisted of a bunch of IOUs in his safe!” Larger Version Neither Toronto nor the NRC would take Herzberg.  Murray approached the Carnegie Corporation for funding.  Although no public announcement had yet been made, Murray believed that the Carnegie Corporation was providing fellowships for “German scholars in distress” – a notion the American-based Corporation was quick to downplay: “...there has been a slight misunderstanding regarding [our] Corporation’s interest in displaced German scholars.”  They said they had no formal system of fellowships, but would give consideration to providing a grant “if you are convinced that a certain German scholar will fill a gap on the staff.”  Murray obtained a grant of $4,500 – two years’ salary.

Gerhard Herzberg and the U of T
Gerhard Herzberg, winner of the 1971 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for his contributions to the knowledge of electronic structure and geometry of molecules, particularly free radicals" died on 3 March 1999 at his home in Ottawa, at age 94. During an active research career lasting seven decades, Herzberg brought to bear a keen and lively interest on a broad range of problems in atomic and molecular physics, chemistry and astrophysics. With the publication of his monograph on Atomic Spectra and Atomic Structure (still in print after 62 years) and his three volumes on Molecular Spectra and Molecular Structure (1939, 1946, 1966) which became classics, Herzberg became a father figure for workers in spectroscopy. At the end of World War II, Herzberg joined Yerkes Observatory of the University of Chicago for three years. He was attracted back to Canada and to the National Research Council in Ottawa, where he was given the opportunity to develop what became "the undisputed centre for molecular spectroscopy." An early contribution at the NRC was the first identification of extra-terrestrial H2 in the planets Uranus and Neptune by Herzberg's extension of the range of pressure-induced spectra of H2 discovered by J. L. Locke, M. F. Crawford and H. L. Welsh (1949) at Toronto. Herzberg was awarded an honorary degree by the U of T in 1958, and two years later was offered a professorship, which he declined. He was delighted to participate in the opening of the new McLennan Physical Labo-ratories in 1967 and to be invited to give the first of the H.L. Welsh Lectures in 1975.
