and his intense and exciting relationship
with the world of Indian thought
In the year 1913 the records of his journey appeared under the title "From India" and in September 1914, just a month after the outbreak of the First World War in Germany, he wrote a poem with the title "Bhagavad Gita". A high point of Hesse's examination of Indian thought is, however, depicted by the short work "Siddhartha", written in the years 1919-1922. Hesse himself says about this "Indian poem" - as it is called in the subtitle:
" This narrration is the declaration of a man of Christian origin and upbringing, who left the Church rather early and who endeavoured to understand other religions, especially Indian and Chinese forms of belief. I tried to discover that which is common to all confessions and all human forms of religiousness and that which stands above all national differences, that which can be believed in and respected by all races."
(From the Persian edition. 1958).
On the Bhagavad Gita, Hesse wrote in a review:
"The wonderful thing about the Bhagavad Gita is that an unpreached, experienced wisdom reveals itself as a helpful suggestion. This beautiful revelation, this wisdom of life, this philosophy which has blossomed out into a religion is that what we are looking for and need."

Hermann Hesse, the Swiss-German novelist who wrote Steppenwolf Siddhartha Demian , and Narcissus and Goldmund , won the Nobel for his final novel and masterpiece, Magister Ludi . This is the book in which he describes the fabulous game known as the "Glass Bead Game" describes it clearly enough that you can almost taste the excitement of playing it, but somehow manages not to tell you exactly how it is played. This section of HipBone's site contains materials about Hesse himself and his novel. You could say the first Nobel for a Web-based computer game design was awarded to novelist Hermann Hesse who received the Prize for Literature in 1946 for his novel, Magister Ludi ... It's not strictly accurate, of course, to say his Nobel was for game design but it does get a point across: that the design for a game, the "Glass Bead Game", was central to Hesse's book. Literature is a marvelous thing, and sometimes a very great writer will write a book that seems extraordinarily prescient to those who live fifty or a hundred years later. That's certainly the case with Hesse's novel. Since Hesse completed the book in 1943, a lot of things have happened which Hesse certainly couldn't have predicted not least among them, the personal computer the internet and the web. And yet the Glass Bead Game as Hesse describes it is eerily reminiscent of these things. Timothy Leary said the Game was prophetic of the personal computer, Stanford futurist Paul Saffo claims Hesse's book is the finest introduction to the best of modern business practices, Alan Watts compares the Game to a psychedelic experience...

Hesse was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946. Several of Hesse's novels depict the protagonist's journey into the inner self. A spiritual guide assists the hero in his quest for self-knowledge and shows the way beyond the world "deluded by money, number and time." "For even the most childish intoxication with progress will soon be forced to recognize that writing and books have a function that is eternal. It will become evident that formulations in words and the handling on of these formulations through writing are not only important aids but actually the only means by which humanity can have a history and continuing consciousness of itself."

The Journey to the East
Nobel Prize Winners (1946)
Author Info: Hermann Hesse
(Translated by Hilda Rossner
If Herman Hesse had to hang his entire reputation on reeds as slender as this one, he'd be in big trouble. But Siddartha is a fine novel and he wrote the only truly great novel about the game M'Laba Laba ( Magister Ludi: The Glass Bead Game ), so we'll cut him some slack. This very brief novel consists of the report of a failed pilgrimage to the East by a group of men who belong to a mysterious League. In the course of relating their misadventures, the narrator realizes that the pilgrimage was part of a much larger effort to collect all of human knowledge in one place, that his version of events differs from that of others, that many great thinkers have also participated in this effort and finally, when he despairs of their ever succeeding, that he is being tested and has failed the test. But out of this despair he is able to grow in understanding. As he is told: ...despair is the result of each earnest attempt to go through life with virtue, justice and

Excerpts from the presentation speech by Anders Österling, Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy: It is impossible to do justice to the many changing qualities which make this writer particularly attractive to us and which have justly given him a faithful following. He is a problematic and a confessional poet with the wealth of the South German mind, which he expresses in a very individual mixture of freedom and piety. If one overlooked the passionate tendency to protest, the ever-burning fire that makes the dreamer a fighter as soon as the matters at stake are sacred to him, one might call him a romantic poet. In one passage Hesse says that one must never be content with reality, that one should neither adore nor worship it, for this low, always disappointing, and desolate reality cannot be changed except by denying it through proving our superior strength. Hesse's award is more than the confirmation of his fame. It honours a poetic achievement which presents throughout the image of a good man in his struggle, following his calling with rare faithfulness, who in a tragic epoch succeeded in bearing the arms of true humanism.
