    Huber, Robert 1937-, German biochemist. After receiving his doctorate at Munich Technical Univ., he worked both there and at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry. With Hartmut Michel and Johann Deisenhofer , Huber developed a process that used X-ray technology to determine the structure of large molecules. For this innovation the three researchers were awarded the 1988 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

    16/XI/2000 El premi Nobel Robert Huber, honoris causa per la UAB Robert Huber , va ser guardonat el passat 15 de novembre amb el grau de doctor honoris causa Robert Huber, que en el que portem d’any ja ha publicat tres articles a la prestigiosa revista Nature Els gens, un trencaclosques sense fi? L’investigador, després d’oferir una concisa descripció de les bases de l’enginyeria genètica, va exposar "com és d’escàs el coneixement que en realitat tenim sobre la nostra existència i quins buits d’aquest coneixement s’han d’omplir de manera urgent". Huber va remarcar la importància de determinar l’estructura tridimensional de les molècules biològiques a l’era post-genoma, tot i que, segons va indicar "en aquest camp som dins un túnel sense ni tant sols veure la llum de la sortida". Per al premi Nobel, el sincrotró constitueix una eina fonamental per fer avançar aquest tipus de recerca, entre moltes d’altres aplicacions.

"Flood of data have to be stored, manipulated and understood, and this is where information technology can help new research in biology, genetics, etc," said Prof. Robert Huber, the 1988 Nobel laureate in Chemistry. Dr Huber was speaking to the Associates of Satyam Computer Services Ltd during a visit to the Satyam Technology Center (STC) at Bahadurpally in the outskirts of Hyderabad, on 25th November 2002. The professor was welcomed at the technology center by senior executives of Satyam. He was taken on a quick tour of the facilities during which he planted a palm sapling to record his visit.

    The three scientists were the first to succeed in unraveling the full details of how a membrane-bound protein is built up, revealing the structure of the molecule atom by atom. The protein is taken from a bacterium, which like green plants and algae, uses light energy from the sun to build organic substances. All our nourishment has its origin in this process, which is called photosynthesis and which is a condition for all life on earth. The organic substances serve as nourishment for both plants and animals. Using the oxygen in the air, they consume these nutrients through what is termed cellular respiration. The conversion of energy in photosynthesis and cellular respiration takes place through transport of electrons via a series of proteins, which are bound in special membranes. These membrane-bound proteins are difficult to obtain in a crystalline form that makes it possible to determine their structure, but in 1982 Hartmut Michel succeeded in doing this. Determination of the structure was then carried out in collaboration with Johann Deisenhofer and Robert Huber between 1982 and 1985.

    • Paul D. Boyer and John E. Walker (1997, Chemistry): Elucidation of enzymatic mechanism underlying the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
      Rudolph Marcus (1992, Chemistry): Electron transfer theory: included application to photosynthesis. [He was at UIUC, Urbana; had attended my course in "Bioenergetics in Photosynthesis"; is currently at Cal Tech in Pasadena, CA.]
      Hartmut Michel ; Robert Huber ; and Johannes Deisenhofer (1988, Chemistry): X-ray structure of bacterial reaction center. [Michel has visited Urbana several times and I have had many conversations with him before and after his prize; I have casually met Deisenhofer, but never Huber. The work was done at Munich, Germany.]
      Peter Mitchell (1978, Chemistry ..to check): Oxidative and photosynthetic phosphorylation: chemi-osmotic theory.[The work was done in England, UK]
      Robert Burns Woodward (1965, Chemistry): Total synthesis of chlorophyll, vitamin B12, and other natural products.[He was at Harvard University]
      Melvin Calvin (1961, Chemistry): Carbon-di oxide assimilation in photosynthesis.[The work was done at Berkeley; Professor Calvin is known to me as he has visited UIUC, and, he is one of the two professors I had applied to do PhD with; the person who discovered 14C (Martin Kamen),that was crucial for Calvin's experiments, is known to me personally.]
