In 1929 and 1957 he designed stamps for The Netherlands, in 1956 for the Netherlands Antilles. There is much more to tell about Harm's work, but as this is a stamp website, I have kept it very short. For those of you who want more information, there is a great book called Harm Kamerlingh Onnes by Willem L. Baars, Jetteke Bolten-Rempt and Doris Wintgens Hötte. (ISBN 90-802721. Heike Kamerlingh Onnes
(Redirected from Heike Kamerlingh-Onnes Heike Kamerlingh Onnes September 21 February 21 ) was a Dutch physicist He won the Nobel Prize in Physics for (in the words of the committee) "his investigations on the properties of matter at low temperatures which led, inter alia, to the production of liquid helium". In Onnes was the first physicist who made this liquidisation of helium possible. For this pupose he founded a cryogenic lab, in [[1904]. Here he managed, using the Joule-Thompson effect , to lower the temperature to less than one degree above the absolute minimum (0,9°K). By then this was by far the coldest place on earth Among his other achievements is the discovery (in ) of superconductivity of pure metals ( mercury tin and lead ) at very low temperatures.

    Our Famous Relatives
It's always exciting to receive new information from distant relatives. But when I received an e-mail from an eighth cousin, it brought some especially interesting news that he and I were related to, not just one but, two Nobel Prize winners! Although they certainly knew each other, Hendrik Lorentz and Heike Kamerlingh Onnes likely did not know they were fifth cousins.
    Hendrik Antoon Lorentz
Second cousin, twice removed. When asked who were the greatest men, the most powerful thinkers he had known, Albert Einstein answered without hesitation, "Lorentz". The influence of Lorentz's work in the world of physics can't be overestimated. His work in understanding why objects shorten as they travel faster was fundamental to Einstein's relativity theory. Lorentz is also known for first postulating the existence of the electron as well as determining the hydraulic effects of the land reclamation project in the Zuyder Zee.

Kamerlingh-Onnes, Heike Heike Kamerlingh Onnes was born on September 21, 1853, at Groningen, The Netherlands. His father, Harm Kamerlingh Onnes, was the owner of a brickworks near Groningen; his mother was Anna Gerdina Coers of Arnhem, the daughter of an architect.
After spending the allotted time at the "Hoogere Burgerschool" in his native town (secondary school without classical languages), the director of which was the later Professor of Chemistry at Leyden J.M. van Bemmelen, he received supplementary teaching in Greek and Latin. In 1870 he entered the University of Groningen, obtained his "candidaats" degree (approx. B.Sc.) the following year, and then went to Heidelberg as a student of Bunsen and Kirchhoff from October 1871 until April 1873. Thereafter he returned to Groningen, where he passed his "doctoraal" examination (approx. M.Sc.) in 1878 and obtained the doctor's degree in 1879 with a remarkable thesis Nieuwe bewijzen voor de aswenteling der aarde (New proofs of the rotation of the earth).
Meanwhile in 1878 he had become assistant at the Polytechnicum at Delft, working under Bosscha, in whose place he also lectured in 1881 and 1882, the year in which he was appointed Professor of Experimental Physics and Meteorology at Leyden University, in succession to P.L. Rijke.

    MAGNETISM AND TEMPERATURE
Metals are good conductors of electricity, because of the number of free electrons per atom (between one and three). Materials that have no free electrons are insulators like glass or plastic. Materials that have a few are called semiconductors . Each atom of copper has one free electron, so it is a good conductor of electricity. As electricity from the battery is "pushed through" the wire, the free electron bumps into other electrons resulting in resistance. Because of this the wire heats up. In many cases, this is desirable; for instance, in heaters. However, when creating high-field electromagnets , this resistance is a problem because the magnets heat up to a point where they can no longer contain the heat and explode. Developing a material that would withstand the heat produced by a high magnetic field was the challenge that faced early experimenters with magnetism. Early in the twentieth century, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes , noted the relationship between lowering temperatures, and at the same time, lowering resistance. He began a search for absolute zero at which there would be no resistance. This led him to temperatures so low gas would turn to liquid. Superconductivity was found in certain metals; that is, they demonstrated no electrical resistance at extremely low temperatures. Onnes received the
