Heike Kamerlingh Onnes September 21 February 21 ) was a Dutch physicist He won the Nobel Prize in Physics for (in the words of the committee) "his investigations on the properties of matter at low temperatures which led, inter alia, to the production of liquid helium". In Onnes was the first physicist who made this liquidisation of helium possible. For this pupose he founded a cryogenic lab, in [[1904]. Here he managed, using the Joule-Thompson effect , to lower the temperature to less than one degree above the absolute minimum (0,9°K). By then this was by far the coldest place on earth Among his other achievements is the discovery (in ) of superconductivity of pure metals ( mercury tin and lead ) at very low temperatures.

Heike Kamerlingh Onnes (1853 - 1926) niederländischer Physiker Heike Kamerlingh Onnes wurde am 21. September 1853 in Groningen geboren. 1894 gründete er an der Universität Leiden das Kältelaboratorium, wo er 1908 Helium und Wasserstoff verflüssigte. Dies war das erste Werk zur Herstellung von flüssiger Luft, bei dem das Kaskadenprinzip angewandt wurde.1908 entdeckte er bei Versuchen mit Quecksilber die Supraleitung . 1913 erhielt er den Nobel preis für Physik "für seine Untersuchungen der Eigenschaften von Materie bei tiefen Temperaturen, die u.a. zur Herstellung von flüssigem Helium führten". The Nobel Prize in Physics went to two scientists at IBM's Swiss research laboratory who discovered that certain ceramics can be made into superconductors. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences gave the chemistry award to Donald J. Cram, chemistry professor at the University of California at Los Angeles; Charles J. Pedersen, a former research chemist at the Du Pont Co.; and Jean- Marie Lehn, a chemistry professor at the Universite Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France. Named to receive the top prize for physics were Georg Bednorz of West Germany and K. Alex Mueller of Switzerland. They were the first to discover ceramic materials that can conduct electricity with virtually no loss of energy at unusually high temperatures. "It really shakes me up," Cram, a 68-year-old native of Brattleboro, Vt., told radio station KNX-AM in Los Angeles. "What I'm delighted about is that the two people with whom I'm sharing it are very fine people."
