Kissinger's family immigrated to the United States in 1938 to escape the Nazi persecution of Jews. He became a naturalized citizen in 1943. After studying accounting at City College, New York, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the postwar U.S. military government of Germany. He received his Ph.D. in 1954 from Harvard and then joined the faculty as instructor, becoming professor of government in 1962 and director of the Defense Studies Program from 1959 to 1969. He also served as a consultant on security matters to various U.S. agencies from 1955 to 1968, spanning the administrations of Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson. Kissinger's Nuclear Weapons and Foreign Policy (1957) established him as a leading authority on U.S. strategic policy. He opposed Secretary of State John Foster Dulles' policy of planning nuclear "massive retaliation" to Soviet attack, advocating instead a "flexible response" combining the use of tactical nuclear weapons and conventional forces, as well as the development of weapons technology in accordance with strategic requirements. The Nobel Peace Prize 1973
Dear Sirs, we are writing about the Nobel Peace Prize by you assigned in 1973 to Mr. Henry Kissinger. Nowadays it is clear the responsibility of the C.I.A. and the USA governments in the years ’70 and ’80 in supporting the bloody South American dictatorships, particularly in Chile and Argentina. We consider Henry Kissinger directly responsible of the crimes of these regimes, due to his role in those days and his friendship with the generals Pinochet and Videla. We therefore ask You to revoke his Nobel Peace Prize as a question of justice towards the victims of these regimes. Waiting for an answer, we remain Yours Faithfully TRADUZIONE FONTI:

Is Henry Kissinger - Nobel Laureate and the most famous diplomat of his generation - also a war criminal? Provoked by the Christopher Hitchens book , filmmakers Jarecki and Gibney have constructed a movie which is both brilliant legal brief and chilling psychodrama. Some of Kissinger's most ardent supporters (Alexander Haig, Brent Scowcroft, William Safire) vie with his detractors (writers Seymour Hersh, William Shawcross, Hitchens himself). Charges that Kissinger was instrumental in creating the coup that toppled Chilean President Allende, that he undermined LBJ's Vietnam peace talks (prolonging the war by seven years), engineered the secret bombing of Cambodia, and approved Indonesian president Suharto's use of U.S. arms to massacre 100,000 East Timorese have resulted in summonses by five nations seeking to depose him. The film plumbs the depth of one man's soul, as it questions tenets of international law: do war criminals reside only in nations whose interests are inimical to our own or are we our own worst enemy?

The Trials of Henry Kissinger: Overview
Last week, President Bush appointed Dr. Henry Kissinger to head the commission to investigate what our government knew and didn't know, what it did and didn't do, before the terror attacks on September 11th. That put the film THE TRIALS OF HENRY KISSINGER in the middle of a raging debate about the fitness of Henry Kissinger to head that commission. The director of that film, Eugene Jarecki commented on the Kissinger's well-known penchant for secrecy and his new appointment in a conversation with Bill Moyers: I think you have to draw a distinction between national interests and national security. And I think very often those are at odds, if what you do is throw out democracy, say, we're experiencing technical difficulties, we're going to put democracy on a back burner for the moment. Please stand by. And injecting secrecy into the event says, it's that line from A FEW GOOD MEN, which says, you can't handle the truth. Well, I think we can handle the truth as a people. And I think we need to handle the truth to be able to find a way in the world to coexist all of us together.
