Associated Press Writer OCTOBER 10, 10:35 EDT Also Tuesday, the chemistry prize went to two Americans and a Japanese scientist for their discoveries that plastic can be made electrically conductive. The work by winners Alan J. Heeger , Alan G. MacDiarmid and Hideki Shirakawa has spurred improvements in film, TV screens and windows and could eventually lead to a host of new technologies, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said. ``The physics prizes are about the electronics of today and the chemistry prizes are about the electronics of the future,'' academy member Per Ahlberg said. In physics, Zhores I. Alferov of the A.F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Herbert Kroemer , a German-born researcher at the University of California at Santa Barbara , will share half the prize for work in developing technology used in satellite communications and cellular phones.

Press Release: Victoria University of Wellington
The achievements of Maurice Wilkins, the scientist who was jointly awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his role in the discovery of the structure of DNA, will be marked at the site of his boyhood home in Wellington (Tuesday 11 February, 1-2pm) to celebrate the golden anniversary of the discovery. Professor Wilkins shared the Nobel Prize with Francis Crick and James Watson. A plaque (transcript follows) and double helix sculpture to honour Professor Wilkins, who counts himself as a New Zealander despite living in the United Kingdom since the early 1920s, will be unveiled by three visiting fellow Nobel Laureates. Professor Alan MacDiarmid, Wellington-born and educated at Victoria University, will be joined by fellow winners of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry —Professors Hideki Shirakawa and Alan Heeger — for the unveiling outside Victoria University's Murphy Building. The Murphy Building is built on the site of 30 Kelburn Parade, which was the family home of Wilkins. Professors MacDiarmid, Shirakawa and Heeger will be in Wellington to attend AMN-1 — an international conference on innovative materials and nanotechnology being organised by the Victoria University-hosted MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology.

Chemistry winners discovery led to revolutionizing information technology
Alan J. Heeger, Alan G. MacDiarmid and Hideki Shirakawa each hold U.S. patents for the work for which they were honored with the 2000 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. There are two main patents that deal with this Nobel prize-winning work. Heeger, MacDiarmid, and Shirakawa are co-inventors on patent #4,222,903 for p-type doping of polyacetylene. Heeger and MacDiarmid are also co-inventors on patent #4,204,216, which is for n-type doping of polyacetylene. The work covered in these patents helped to lay the groundwork for their study of electrical conductivity in plastics. This discovery led to improvements in film, television screens and windows, and one day may lead to thinner computer screens and smaller molecular computers. These patents, as well as all patents issued since the first one in 1790, can be viewed on USPTO's web site

W 2000 r. Nagrodê Nobla z chemii otrzymali trzej uczeni, którzy odkryli plastik zachowuj±cy siê jak metal. Uhonorowani nagrod± zostali: Alan J. Chemistry Nobel Recognizes 3 Scientists for Work in Plastics
By KENNETH CHANG The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded yesterday to three scientists who created a plastic that conducts electricity like a metal, a discovery that has opened up a new field of carbon-based electronics. The prize of about $913,000 will be shared by Dr. Alan J. Heeger, 64, of the University of California at Santa Barbara; Dr. Alan G. MacDiarmid, 73, of the University of Pennsylvania; and Dr. Hideki Shirakawa, 64, of the University of Tsukuba in Japan. The technology is already used to make antistatic coating on photographic film and is expected over the next few years to find its way to bright, low-energy displays in cell phones and other hand-held electronics. ''I thought this was a very nice recognition for the field,'' said Dr. MacDiarmid, a native of New Zealand. Plastics are made of an entwined mesh of long molecules called polymers, each with a central strand of carbon atoms. Polymers generally do not conduct electricity, which is why metal wires are wrapped with plastic insulating sheaths to prevent short circuits. Illustrating the sometimes serendipitous path of science, the discovery of plastic conductors began with a mistake and was nudged forward by an opportune coffee break.
