Mann, Thomas (1875-1955)
page: One of Germany's greatest twentieth-century authors, Thomas Mann encoded his own homosexuality in his novels but thought that homosexuality led to the destruction of social institutions and the death of the individual homosexual. Winner of the 1929 Nobel Prize for literature, Mann bridges nineteenth-century realist fiction and the twentieth-century modernist style in his novels, short stories, and essays. His mother, Julia da Silva-Bruhus, was the daughter of a German businessman and a Brazilian mother. Through her, Thomas became interested in music, literature, and art, which, because of his mother's parentage, Mann always associated with Southern cultures and climates. His pragmatism and work ethic derived from the Northern influence of his father, he believed. When his father died in 1891, at the age of fifty-one, the family business was sold. His father had realized neither Thomas nor his older brother Heinrich would become his successor, as both had shown more interest in literature than in business.

Thomas Mann (1875-1955)
Introduction
Thomas Mann
and the Buddenbrookhaus there.) When his father died in 1891, Thomas's mother moved to Munich with his three younger sisters. Thomas and his older brother Heinrich also soon left the north German town where they had grown up. Both would later become noted authors. Thomas Mann's first great literary success was the novel Buddenbrooks (1901), for which he would later receive a Nobel Prize (1929). In 1905 Mann married Katia Pringsheim. Out of that union came six children, three of them also became writers (Erika, Klaus and Golo Mann). After the Nazis came to power in Germany, Mann took his family to America. Except for a few visits to his homeland after 1945, Mann remained in the U.S. until leaving California in 1952 after being labeled a communist "fellow traveler" during the red scare era. He moved to Switzerland, where he died in 1955. Thomas Mann's works include:
  • Buddenbrooks / Buddenbrooks: Verfall einer Familie (1901) Death in Venice / Der Tod in Venedig (1912) A Man and His Dog / Herr und Hund (1919) The Magic Mountain / Der Zauberberg (1924)

"There is enough here to allow us to see with our own eyes [the] true progress of this artist through the disasters of history in his lifetime. . . . No biography, not even an autobiography, can give this sense of the immediate living of a life."John Thompson, Harper's Magazine "Mann's correspondence was seldom dull and never perfunctoryhe justly credits himself with 'bringing linguistic passion to letters'. . . . Though he wrote famous anti-Nazi letters, as well as scores to family and intimate friends, what emerges most is a deep commitment to German cultural tradition. He loved his language and those who mastered it, pre-eminently Goethe."Martha Duffy, Time "Mann's pivotal role during the Nazi period as perhaps the most eloquent spokesman for the 'other Germany' that lived in exile means that anyone studying the history of our century must begin with him. . . . These letters are literary and cultural documents that have few equals in our age."James K. Lyon, University of California, San Diego

Translations of his major political speeches and essays are published in Order of the Day (1942). Mann's own selection of his literary essays appeared in English as Essays of Three Decades (1947). These elaborate the recurrent themes of his fiction through studies of thinkers who influenced him. Mann left (1933) Hitler's Germany for Switzerland in self-imposed exile, was deprived (1936) of his citizenship by the Nazis, and after 1938 lived in the United States until he returned to Switzerland in 1953.
