[Garcia-Marquez] tells the rich and lusty story of the rise and fall of the Buendía family. Love and death, war and peace, youth and age the noble and stunningly beautiful story of this family is alive with a truth and understanding that strike the soul. (from the book jacket) Of Love and Other Demons
From the Nobel Prize winning author of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera , a startling new novel the story of a doomed love affair between an unruly copper-haired girl and the bookish priest sent to oversee her exorcism. O Of Love and Other Demons haunts us with its evocation of an exotic world while it treats, majestically, of the most universal experiences known to woman and man. (from the book jacket) News of a Kidnapping A recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature, the great novelist Gabriel García Márquez, returns to his roots as a journalist in telling an involved story from his native Colombia. Drug kingpins who feared being extradited to the United States, where they would likely face life sentences, decided to dramatically pressure the Colombian government. Ten prominent Colombians, some of whom were well-known television personalities, were kidnapped and held as hostages. Some of the survivors of the ordeal asked García Márquez to tell the story, and the novelist does a masterfully understated job. The various characters, from the hostages kept in makeshift dungeons to the despairing government officials to the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar are portrayed brilliantly in this real-life tale of suspense. Sun, 10 Jan 1999 11:12:07 -0800 Anyone have a source for or suggestion as to where we can find a Spanish version of the speech Gabriel Garcia Marquez gave in Nov. 1982 when he received the Nobel prize for literature. In English it was entitled "The Solitude of Latin America". We have contacted the Nobel prize people who can find English text only. Are we making a faulty assumption about its translation? Surely it was picked up in the Spanish language press at the time or in someone's study of the man and his work? Does anyone know an amenable Garcia Marquez scholar who's brain we can pick? Please respond on REFORMANET or directly to Judith Heck, Reference Librarian, Denver Public Library, 10 W. 14th Avenue Parkway, Denver, CO 80204 303-640-6207 fax jheck@denver.lib.co.us
