Statement by Nobel Laureates on the occasion of the one-hundredth anniversary of the Nobel Prize
Introduction Preamble Statement
Introduction
110 Nobel Prize Winners Look Ahead
On the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize. Dateline Stockholm; December 11, 2001. The attached Statement was released as 150 Nobel Laureates gathered in Stockholm, Sweden, and Oslo, Norway, for an unprecedented celebration marking the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize. (The prize winners in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Economics meet in Stockholm where their prizes were awarded, and, correspondingly, the Peace Prize winners meet in Oslo.) In brief, the Statement warns that the world may explode into war if modern weapons continue to spread, and environmental strains remain unchecked. It stresses that we shall not have enduring peace until we address the twin scourges of poverty and oppression, and calls for a new sense of global responsibility. It hardly need be said that the signatories make no claim to oracular status, but offer their views as a group of concerned citizens.

Nobel Prize Winners Seek Stronger Support for Basic Science
The American Institute of Physics Bulletin of Science
Policy News Number 101: June 26, 1996 The letter, dated June 19, follows: "Dear President Clinton and Members of Congress: "As men and women who have helped to shape the modern scientific age and who care deeply about the future of our nation, we urge you to reaffirm the fundamental role of the federal government in supporting basic scientific research. "Americans have been awarded more than one-half of all Nobel Prizes in physics, chemistry and medicine since 1945. This impressive success is no accident, but the result of a firm and consistent commitment by the federal government to basic science research at our universities. Our nation's policymakers and public have been prudent investors because their support has paid off in tremendous ways. "America's investment in research over the last fifty years has been a vital source of our economic and political strength around the world, as well as the quality of life Americans enjoy at home. The polio vaccine, computers, jet propulsion and disease resistant grains and vegetables are some of the thousands of advances pioneered at our universities that have had dramatic benefits for our health, economy, security and quality of life. "New and equally breathtaking advances may be just around the corner. Genetic research, for example, gives promise of better treatments for Alzheimer's, cancer and other diseases. Lighter and stronger composite materials may be developed with important applications in transportation, medicine and the military. Continuing support for university-based research will not only pave the way for these important breakthroughs, but will also train the next generation of pioneers and Nobelists.

Surgery of the Soul: Reflections on a Curious Career Joseph E Murray Science History Publications/USA, $35, pp 255 For ordering details, see www.shpusa.com Rating: ISBN 88135 255 1
S urgery of the Soul is a most unusual book by a most unusual surgeon. Joseph Murray is one of only four surgeons to have received the highest honour in science the Nobel prize (in 1990). This was for his contributions to the field of transplantation. In 1954, Murray performed the first kidney transplant in a human being. Later, he concentrated on developing cosmetic plastic surgery ("my true surgical identity") into a "respectable" profession. Yet he frowns on "body sculpting" surgery. This curiously named book is three accounts rolled into one an autobiography, a surgeon's logbook, and thoughts on good medical practice. Because a doctor's life is intertwined with that of

FROM THE LEADERS OF THE WORLD For severe recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome, UPMC orthopedic surgeons perform new vein-wrapping technique
Pittsburgh, Oct 30 - To treat patients with severe recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome, orthopaedic surgeons at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) are performing a novel technique in which they wrap a vein around the involved nerve to insulate it from recurrent compression and the development of painful scar tissue caused by previous unsuccessful surgical treatments.
Dead Sotereanos, M.D. associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the UPMC, recently described the technique to peers at meetings of the European Federation for Hand Surgery and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) affects one in 10 people and is the most common type of compressed nerve condition, according to Dr: Sotereanos.
Its symptoms are: chronic wrist pain, numbness and tingling in the thumb, index and middle fingers, hand and wrist that also can shoot through the upper arm.
The pain seems to worsen at night and with increased activity.

Guest Editorial: Biting the Hand That Cures You
How the "Animal Rights" Movement Threatens Medical Progress
by Dr. Joseph E. Murray Special to The Libertarian Enterprise The line of cars in front of Children's Hospital in Boston stretched for four blocks. Anxious parents clamored for medical attention for their children. Harried doctors had to examine their young patients in the cars the vast wards of Children's Hospital were already filled to capacity.
That scene was repeated at hospitals around the country during the polio epidemics of the 1950s.
Polio. Poliomyelitis. Infantile paralysis. The very words evoked terror in the hearts of parents. The slightest fever or soreness in a child could be the first sign of the horrible disease. Summers meant closed swimming pools and empty beaches. Children were kept indoors, away from their playmates.
The fear of polio gripped our nation.
The 1952 epidemic alone struck down nearly 58,000 children and young adults. Polio killed thousands. It left others unable to walk and dependent on wheelchairs or crutches. Patients who were no longer able to breathe on their own had to remain in huge metal cylinders that mechanically pumped air into their lungs.
Those "iron lungs" were chilling images in old movie newsreels that are now consigned to dusty archives. At the movies today, we laugh and feel the triumph when polio-stricken Forrest Gump runs so fast that his steel-and-leather braces fly apart.
