By Alvin Lu AFTER RECEIVING the Nobel prize for literature in 1994, Kenzaburo Oe, committed "novelistic suicide" in a postmodern version of a tradition among 20th-century Japanese writers. (That tradition was also upheld by the only other Japanese or Asian, for that matter winner of the Nobel prize for literature Yasunari Kawabata, who inhaled gas.) The reason for doing his deed, Oe said, had to do with the virtual disappearance from Japan of a novel-reading public. Of course, there is nothing particularly binding or permanent about his act (one of the curses of our age), and we can assume that to "suicide back to life" (like the poet Tokk in Ryunosuke Akutagawa's fantasy Kappa), Oe need only take another crack at the fictional form. In Oe's later work this sense of the slipping away of a world in which he once had been in supreme control manifests itself, much as it did in Akutagawa's work, in a compulsive referencing of other writers and artists. So Kidlat Tahimik and Peter Matthiessen walk-ons in Echo of Heaven as if they were longtime friends of the author (which they apparently are), and characters in Echo study, summarize, and discuss in long (and long-winded) passages Saint Augustine, Balzac, Dante, F. Abe Kobo made it (though still alive), in part, because he was the professor's dissertation subject. But Oe, who is younger than I am (was not yet forty then) did have the beginning of a reputation among readers of Japanese fiction in English translation, based largely on a single novel at that time, A Personal Matter , the story of a man, Bird, who must come to terms with, first, the responsibilities of being married at all, thenthe central action of the bookhow to deal with the birth of a deformed child, who seems like a monster to him. I read this novel that summer, and was made uncomfortable by the way the psychology of the problem was handled (the basic problem of the deformed child Oe has evidently handled very well in his own life). I wasn't in class the day this question was asked: Who is more Japanese, Oe Kenzaburo or Murakami Haruki ? But I'd like to address this question. The idea that there are degrees of Japaneseness is ridiculous, I think. That implies that there is something we can measure and quantify in terms of ethnicity. It is a dangerous question, it is the type of question that led Hitler to exterminate 6 million German Jews. It is the kind of question, that by merely being asked, leads to the discrimination of Okinawans on the part of "mainstream" Japanese. But to attempt to answer the question: in terms of these authors in particular, clearly we ARE dealing with two writers who came into fruition at different times and in different circumstances. Oe is definitely more Showa than Murakami, if that makes any sense. But Murakami's alienated, dropped-out protagonists and his constant references to Western culture (be it pop or high) do represent Japan. Just look at his sales figures, folks. 4 million copies of Norwegian Wood, recipient of almost all the major literary prizers his country has to offer. And he's nearly as popular in America. I'm explicitly defining my answer to this question in terms of size of Murakami's reading audience because it shows that contemporary middle-aged and younger Japanese people relate to his work at least as well (and I'd venture to say quite a few of them relate to him better) than they do Oe's.

He has a son, Hikaru, who is a retarded, so he wrote about his life and bringing him up. Hikaru has a pure mind and warm heart, so he composes a lot of classical music. His works are all very tender, warm and artistic. Oe wrote some books, about his the most famous of which is "Kojinteki-na-Taiken(means personal experience)." In September in 1994, Oe finally won the Novel literary prize. People all over the world recognized him as one of the greatest writers in the world.
