Like a beast in a pen, I'm cut off
From my friends, freedom, the sun,
But the hunters are gaining ground.
I've nowhere else to run.
Dark wood and the bank of a pond,
Trunk of a fallen tree.
There's no way forward, no way back.
It's all up with me.
Am I a gangster or murderer? Of what crime do I stand Condemned? I made the whole world weep At the beauty of my land. Even so, one step from my grave, I believe that cruelty, spite, The powers of darkness will in time Be crushed by the spirit of light. The beaters in a ring close in With the wrong prey in view, I've nobody at my right hand, Nobody faithful and true. And with such a noose on my throat I should like for one second My tears to be wiped away By someone at my right hand. Jewish Nobel Prize Laureates in Literature
Rather amazing how many Jewish Nobel laureates there have been, in all the various fields. Alas, this is the Jewish Book Mall, not the Jewish Nobel Laureate Page, so we list here only the winners in Literature. Well, almost...(see below). The good thing is, you can find books by and about most of these authors. Just click on their names. Paul Johann Ludwig Heyse
Henri Bergson

Boris Leonidovich Pasternak

Shmuel Yosef Agnon

Nelly Sachs
... Elie Wiesel won the Nobel Prize in 1986, but not in Literature - he was awarded the Peace prize. But we've included him here anyway, because in addition to his praiseworthy work to help all peoples, his literature is now part of the canon of Jewish storytelling.

(Pasternak, 1959) Boris Pasternak was not only one of the greatest literary minds to come out of Russia in the twentieth century but of all time. His greatest work, Doctor Zhivago, sadly, was not originally published in his native Russia but in Milan, Italy. It stands as a testament to when the State quashes literary freedom.
The Life of Boris Pasternak Boris Leonidovich Pasternak was born in Moscow, February 20, 1890. His father, Leonid, was a painter and his mother, Rosa Kaufman, was a concert pianist. He attended the Moscow Fifth Gymnasium from 1901 to 1908. He went to Moscow State University from 1909 to 1913, briefly studying at the University of Marburg in 1912. After university, he was a private tutor and also a chemical factory worker in the Urals. He was a librarian for the Soviet ministry of Education. He married Evgenia Vladimirovna Lourie in 1922 and had one son. After this marriage dissolved in 1931, he married Zinaida Nicolevna Neigauz and had another son. He completed his work on Doctor Zhivago about 1956. Deemed "counter-revolutionary", this book about a man who strove to live a simple life caused him to be expelled from the Soviet Writers' union, of which he became a member in 1932. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958 but because of extreme pressure from the Soviets he was forced to decline it. He died of cancer, May 30, 1960, at Peredkilno.

Christopher Barnes, Boris Pasternak. A Literary Biography . Volume Two, 1928-1960. Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 1998; xviii+491 pp.; ISBN: 0521259584
The death of Boris Leonidovich Pasternak in his Peredelkino dacha on May 30, 1960 marked the end of a long life and a celebrated writing career. However, it also marked the beginning of a long and bitter contest, both personal and political, over his life and his work: a fight that does not seem to be over yet.
Christopher Barnes’s Boris Pasternak: A Literary Biography certainly offers few terms for reconciliation, or even grounds for negotiation. On the contrary, Barnes’s second volume, which covers the period 1928-1960, is as passionate, uncompromising, and unbalanced as one could expect from an author who allows himself to provide his readers with unambiguous answers to the implicit (and characteristically Russian) question: not the famous Chto delat’? – “What is to be done?” but Kto vinovat? – “Who is to blame?”
Christopher Barnes has been given unrestricted access to extensive archive material. This allows him to let Boris Pasternak speak in his own voice throughout the biography through citations from correspondence; the device of documentary montage renders much of the biography trustworthy and lends tonal variety to the book. There are also gripping depictions of Pasternak’s suicide attempt in 1932 (63) and of the legendary phone call from Joseph Stalin (90), and a witty and moving account of Pasternak’s 1935 journey to Paris: on these occasions the reader is treated to eloquent storytelling. However, Barnes allows himself few analytical digressions. The account of Stalin’s telephone call could have provided an opportunity to discuss the lasting and intense significance of that episode among Russian intellectuals. Each version of events has served as a touchstone for
