Turner hält am 6. Dezember im Physikalischen Institut der Universität Bonn die Wolfgang Paul-Vorlesung 2000. Professor Turner ist Direktor des Fachbereichs Astronomie und Astrophysik der University of Chicago und Wissenschaftler am Enrico-Fermi-Institut in Chicago. Er wird in der Bonner Universität um 10:00 Uhr im Wolfgang Paul-Hörsaal am Kreuzbergweg unter dem Titel "How the Universe Began" aus seiner aktuellen Forschungsarbeit zur Frühgeschichte des Universums berichten. Der 51-jährige Wissenschaftler hat in mehr als 200 populärwissenschaftlichen Vorträgen in aller Welt seine Forschungsarbeiten über den so genannten "Big Bang" und die rasante Expansion des Universums bekannt gemacht. Turner, der unter anderem Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Sciences und der National Academy of Sciences der USA ist, hat sieben Bücher und über 200 Artikel in wissenschaftlichen Fachzeitschriften veröffentlicht. Er ist der vierte Wissenschaftler, der in Bonn die Wolfgang Paul-Vorlesung hält. Namensgeber der Vorlesung ist der 1993 verstorbene Bonner Physiker und Nobelpreisträger Wolfgang Paul. Er war von 1979 bis 1989 Präsident der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung und hat die Hälfte seines Nobel-Preisgeldes in die Wolfgang Paul-Stiftung eingebracht, die von der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung verwaltet wird. In Gedenken an Professor Wolfgang Paul finanziert die Stiftung die Vorlesungsreihe am Physikalischen Institut der Bonner Universität.

Page: Section: OBITUARY BONN Wolfgang Paul, who won the Nobel Prize in physics for developing a technique for isolating ions and electrons, died in Bonn yesterday at the age of 80. Mr. Paul, director of nuclear physics research at Bonn University from the 1950s through 1980, had been ill for the past several weeks and died at his home of heart failure, said his wife, Doris. During World War II he was part of a team that researched isotope separation, a method for producing fissionable material for an atomic bomb. He later became an opponent of Germany possessing nuclear arms. In 1989, Mr. Paul was named winner of the Nobel Prize in physics along with Americans Norman F. Ramsey and Hans Dehmelt. He was cited for being the first to develop a method to isolate ions and electrons. The so-called "Paul Trap" permitted physicists to hold the particles long enough to study them with precision.
