Three Nobel Laureates, including atomic pioneer Hans Bethe, today released a statement condemning the Bush Administration's Nuclear Posture Review. The three experts declared: "The Nuclear Posture Review signals an unfortunate reversal of longstanding policy, ending the taboo against nuclear weapons by including them in the full range of weapons to be used against countries with which the U.S. has major disagreements. " They continued: "The Bush administration may be embracing what every previous President has rejected and could provoke a dangerous escalation of the nuclear arms race at a time when nuclear weapons should be eliminated." The three signers are: Hans A. Bethe, one of the original Manhattan Project scientists and a 1967 Nobel Laureate in Physics; Dudley Herschbach, 1986 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry; and

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists John C. Polanyi The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1986 John Charles Polanyi was born in 1929 in Berlin, Germany, of Hungarian parents, Michael and Magda Elizabeth Polanyi. The family moved to England in 1933 where he received his education. His university training was at Manchester University, where he obtained his B. Sc. in 1949, and his Ph. D. in 1952. From 1952-1954, he was a Postdoctoral fellow at the National Research Council Laboratories in Ottawa, Canada, and from 1954-1956 Research Associate at Princeton University. In 1956, John Polanyi was appointed as a Lecturer at the University of Toronto where he was successively Assistant Professor (1957-1960), Associate Professor (1960-1962) and Professor (1962-present). He was given the title University Professor in January 1974. In 1958, he married Anne Ferrar Davidson. They have two children, Margaret Alexandra (born 1961), and Michael Ferrar (born 1963). He was awarded the Marlow Medal of the Faraday Society , Centenary Medal of the British Chemical Society, the Henry Marshall Tory Medal of the royal Society of Canada, and the Royal Medal of the Royal Society of London. He was also recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1986 together with Dudley R. Herschback and Yuan T. Lee, "for their contributions concerning the dynamics of chemical elementary processes".

University of Waterloo News Bureau For immediate release Nobel prize winner John Polanyi delivers Hagey lecture at UW WATERLOO, Ont. Nobel Prize winner John Polanyi will deliver the University of Waterloo's Hagey Lecture Jan. 18, marking the 25th anniversary of the series named after the university's founding president, Gerry Hagey. An advocate of the importance of basic research, Polanyi will talk on "Research in Jeopardy: Some Thoughts Concerning Science Policy," focusing on the status of Canada's scientific research and the role of the government in maintaining the high standards of Canadian science. The Wednesday night lecture begins at 8 p.m. in the Humanities Theatre. Free tickets are available at the Humanities Theatre box office and the UW Faculty Association's office in the Mathematics and Computer building, Room 4004. Polanyi, a chemistry professor at the University of Toronto, was named co-recipient of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research in reaction dynamics, work that led to the creation of the chemical laser. In recognition of his contributions to science, the $2- million John C. Polanyi Chair in Chemistry was set up in his honor at U of T last July 1. Polanyi, 65, is the first holder of the chair. Also in his honor, the Ontario government has established the John Charles Polanyi Prizes, awarded to outstanding young scholars in the Nobel Prize fields of chemistry, literature, physics, physiology and medicine, and economics. Polanyi, who received a UW honorary degree in 1970, has collaborated with several Waterloo professors through his participation in the federally funded Network of Centres of Excellence in Molecular and Interfacial Dynamics. Recently, he has criticized a federal move to chop funding for the centre, established in 1988. His current work in physical chemistry, which continues to receive international praise, uses laser light to initiate chemical reactions among molecules aligned on crystalline surfaces. While at UW on Jan. 17, Polanyi will give a lecture about his own scientific research for graduate and undergraduate students entitled: "The Molecular Dance in Chemical Reaction." - 30 - Contacts: Vera Golini, chair, Hagey Lecture committee, (519) 884-8110, ext. 217; John Hepburn, Hagey Lecture committee, 888-4065. There's a better way
John Polanyi
Globe and Mail, Tuesday, July 25, 2000

Almost unnoticed, the United States and Russia have embarked on an unprecedented kind of joint espionage, says Nobel laureate John Polanyi. The result may make missile defence obsolete.
The people who dreamed up the U.S. National Missile Defence (NMD) proposal got one thing right: A world with thousands of nuclear weapons mounted on missiles ready for firing is unsafe. Yet we know the world is a safer place than it was. We know, too, that it was not missile defences that made it so, but the spread of openness and responsible government around the world. Fewer governments than before are sealed off from their people, and fewer nations from one another. The best hope for a secure world lies in fostering this trend. But the NMD proposal runs counter to it by trying to fence in one nation. This wrong-headed solution is not improved by the fact that the fence will be an imperfect one. Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs has tried to distance the country from the American idea. Given our ties to the U.S. defence establishment, that has proved difficult. The debate in Ottawa appears to be at a standstill, while the missile defence proposal rolls on. What is to be done? The recent, and relatively unheralded, U.S.-Russian summit suggests a direction to go in. On June 4, in Moscow, Bill Clinton and Vladimir Putin signed an agreement committing them, for the first time, to a permanent military collaboration. They pledged themselves to establish a jointly staffed monitoring agency for missile launches. This shared early warning system bears the nondescript initials JDEC ("jaydec" in Pentagonese), for Joint Data Exchange Centre.

Statement by Nobel Laureates on the occasion of the one-hundredth anniversary of the Nobel Prize
Introduction Preamble Statement
Introduction
110 Nobel Prize Winners Look Ahead
On the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize. Dateline Stockholm; December 11, 2001. The attached Statement was released as 150 Nobel Laureates gathered in Stockholm, Sweden, and Oslo, Norway, for an unprecedented celebration marking the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize. (The prize winners in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Economics meet in Stockholm where their prizes were awarded, and, correspondingly, the Peace Prize winners meet in Oslo.) In brief, the Statement warns that the world may explode into war if modern weapons continue to spread, and environmental strains remain unchecked. It stresses that we shall not have enduring peace until we address the twin scourges of poverty and oppression, and calls for a new sense of global responsibility. It hardly need be said that the signatories make no claim to oracular status, but offer their views as a group of concerned citizens.

Testing and production have caused environmental degradation everywhere on the planet. We must take action and urge our governments to take steps to end the nuclear weapons threat to the Earth and its inhabitants. 100 international leaders and notables - including the XIVth Dalai Lama, Queen Noor of Jordan, Archbishop Desmond Tutu,Ted Turner, Muhammad Ali, Jimmy Carter, Elie Wiesel and Michael Douglas - have signed NAPF's Appeal to End the Nuclear Weapons Threat to Humanity which lists five immediate steps to be taken to rid the world of nuclear weapons.

We cannot hide from the threat that nuclear weapons pose to humanity and all life. These are not ordinary weapons, but instruments of mass annihilation that could destroy civilization and end all life on Earth.
