W ORK CONDUCTED at Long Island's Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton has led to four Nobel prizes in physics over the years, providing new insights into the structure and behavior of matter. In the realm of biology, research carried out at Cold Spring Harbor Lab led to three Nobel Prizes that helped lay groundwork for advances in modern genetics. Here's a look at the scientists and their research. Nobel Winners in Physics In 1956 theoretical physicists C.N. Yang of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and T.D. Lee of Columbia University spent the summer as guest scientists at Brookhaven Lab. Yang and Lee were intrigued by experiments with the lab's Cosmotron, an atom smasher, that suggested that one of the most fundamental principles of physics called the conservation of parity was being violated. The conservation of parity implies that if an event is possible, its reflection in a mirror represents an equally possible event. Such symmetry, first probed by Eugene Paul Wigner during the 1930s, was accepted as an inviolable law.

For the birth of the neutrino particle, beta radioactivity had to be known. Henri Becquerel, in 1896, did the first experiments on the radioactivity phenomena . Pierre and Marie Curie discovered in 1898 the radium, two millions times more radioactive than the uranium salts used by Becquerel. Those three scientists were at the origin of the fundamental researches on the atomic nucleus undertaken in the following years, which gave us, among others, the discovery of the neutrino, 50 years later. James Chadwick
In 1914, James Chadwick shows that energy spectrum of the beta radioactivity electrons is a continuum. This problem of the continuous beta spectrum will lead 16 years later to the Pauli hypothesis and will make Niels Bohr anxious about the energy conservation principle. In 1932, Chadwick discovers the neutron, the proton's partner in atomic nucleus. With this discovery he participates indirectly to the baptism of "neutrino" by Fermi and receives the pysics Nobel price.
Wolfgang PAULI
The idea of neutrino was born only in 1930, when Wolfgang Pauli tried a desperate saving of the "energy conservation principle". In order to explain the continuous beta spectrum, he invented a new light particle, neutral and interacting very few with the other particles of matter.

Pour que naisse le neutrino, il fallait que la radioactivite beta soit connue. C'est Henri Becquerel qui en 1896 fit les premieres experiences sur le phenomene de la radioactivite . Pierre et Marie Curie decouvrirent ensuite le radium, deux million de fois plus radioactif que les sels d'uranium utilises par Becquerel. Tous trois furent a l'origine des recherches fondamentales sur les noyaux atomiques, entreprisent dans les annees qui suivirent, et qui aboutirent, entre autres, a la decouverte du neutrino, 50 ans plus tard. James Chadwick
En 1914, James Chadwick montre que le spectre en energie de l'electron provenant de la desintegration beta est continu. This isn't humour, but I didn't know where else to put it.
Today, at a time when fundamentalist Islamic extremism is affecting so much of our world, I think it's interesting to note the statistical difference between Arabs and Jews shown below. I think that if the fanatics spent less time on politics and religion, and more on 'useful endeavours' (lots of room for discussion here!), it would be a good thing for their people and for everyone. Five of City College's eight Nobel Prize winners returned to their alma mater to be honored at a Joint Sesquicentennial Award Lecture and Chemistry Alumni Reunion Dinner (on April 8). They were: Arthur Kornberg '37, Julius Axelrod '33, Leon Lederman '43, Jerome Karle '37, and Herbert Hauptman '37. Each received CCNY's Annual Chemistry Alumni Medal, which has been awarded to many distinguished scientists including 16 Nobel Laureates over the past 50 years. CCNY Professor Emeritus Amos Turk '37, a classmate of three of the scientists, introduced the Laureates to the guests at the Award Lecture. Past Nobel Laureates who have received the CCNY Medal include Irving Langmuir, Robert B. Woodward, Linus C. Pauling and Herbert. C. Brown. Following are brief notes on the 1997 CCNY Chemistry Alumni Award Medalists: Dr. Julius Axelrod: Class of '33, majored in biology. A co-recipient of the 1970 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Bernard Katz, for their discoveries concerning the humoral transmittors in the nerve terminals and the mechanism for their storage, release and inactivation. Dr. Arthur Kornberg: Class of '37, majored in chemistry. A co-recipient of the 1959 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Severo Ochoa. For their discovery of the mechanisms in the biological synthesis of ribonucleic acid and deoxiribonucleic acid.
