It is then b u r s t into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who r e k i n d l e the human spirit Albert Schweitzer Philosopher and missionary surgeon Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) was a man who rekindled the human spirit of others. Born on this day in Alsace, Germany , he fulfilled his vow at age 30 to dedicate his life to mankind and became an international symbol of humanitarianism, his name synonymous with altruism. "Do something for somebody every day for which you do not get paid," he urged. Schweitzer, an accomplished organist and Bach scholar, founded a hospital in Lambarene, Africa to fight malaria and leprosy, then donated his prize money from the 1952 Nobel Peace Award to build a leper colony. Natives came from hundreds of miles away for treatment. "I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know, the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve ," he said.

Dr. Albert Schweitzer was the preeminent Christian medical missionary in Africa, a towering figure in twentieth-century Protestant thought and philosophy, and an accomplished musician. Although his reputation had been somewhat eclipsed since the end of the colonial period, during his lifetime Schweitzer was one of the most respected and honored personalities in the world. In 1952 he received the Nobel Prize for being an exemplar of the "Brotherhood of Nations". Schweitzer, born in Alsace under German governance, was the son of a Reformed pastor. After studies at the University of Strasbourg, where he received doctorates in both philosophy and theology, he became pastor of Strasbourg's St. Nicholas Church. He had interspersed his academic work with study of the organ and was simultaneously appointed organist of the Bach Society of Paris. In 1905 he published J.S. Bach: The Musician-Poet , in which he presented Bach as a religious mystic whose music was an entry point to understanding nature's cosmic forces. Schweitzer's reputation as the foremost interpreter of Bach was strengthened, and the book was an immediate success. The following year he published The Quest of the Historical Jesus , which established Schweitzer as a world figure in theology and which has been a benchmark in modern theology ever since. In addition, Schweitzer was a popular, witty, and charismatic preacher with a devoted following.

German theologian, musician, philosopher and missionary doctor.
After receiving a doctorate in philosophy (1899) he achieved world recognition for his organ interpretations of J. S. Bach and his studies of the life of Bach (1905) and Jesus (1906). In 1905 he entered medical school with the aim of becoming a missionary doctor, graduating in 1913. With his nurse-wife he established a hospital at Lambaréné on the Ogooué (Ogowe) River in French-ruled Gabon.
He was forced to evacuate the hospital during World War 1. He returned to Germany and published a number of philosophical works. In 1924 he went back to Gabon to resume his medical work. Although considered eccentric and paternalistic by some, he won international acclaim for his work and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1954. Mark R. Lipschutz and R. Kent Rasmussen

ALBERT SCHWEITZER UNIVERSITY was founded in October 1999 as a non-profit making institution with headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland). In August 2001 was incorporated in USA as a non-profit Corporation. The opening of the University crowned a series of educational initiatives inspired by the figure of the Nobel Prize award winner. Learning centers worldwide were precursors of the new ALBERT SCHWEITZER UNIVERSITY. Almost 126 years after the birth of the man who was one of the most influential leaders of his generation in the search for peace, a University inspired by his renaissance spirit has been founded. This has been made possible thanks to the support and efforts of so many who cherished the idea of a University inspired by his ideals. But how was this University to be structured? Even amongst its promoters, it took time to reach consensus. On the threshold of the twenty-first century, in the midst of the electronic revolution, it made little sense to create a traditional University in competition with the long-established state Universities. Pacifism and humanitarianism were to be the hallmarks of our University, a University that has assumed a commitment to supporting the academic needs and initiatives of the poor countries of the world, and a commitment to the search for funding and subsidies required by those Universities most in need. This is the model for action that our Nobel Prize winner offers. Public honors and distinctions had no place in the scheme he proposed.

Albert Schweitzer (1874 – 1965)
Born in Alsace as the eldest son of a Lutheran Pastor, Albert Schweitzer has been called the greatest Christian of his time. His personal philosophy was based on a “reverence for life” and on a deep commitment to serve humanity through thought and action. From a young age Schweitzer showed a passion and a talent for playing the organ, and by 1893 he had a career as an organist in Strasbourg. He was accepted as a pupil by some of Europe’s finest professionals and later went on to become the world’s leading expert on organ building. Charles-Marie Widor, his organ teacher in Paris, recognized Schweitzer as a Bach interpreter of unique perception and asked him to write a study of the composer’s life and art. The result was J.S. Bach: le musicien-poete

an outline biography
Albert Schweitzer was born in Kaysersberg, Upper Alsace, Germany (now Haut-Rhin Department, France) on January 14, 1875 into a family that had a long tradition of service in music, religion, scholarship and education. He initially seemed destined for a career in music, even receiving some advanced training in Paris, but later decided to follow the same calling as his father - that of becoming a pastor.    He was educated in Theology at the University of Strasbourg from 1893, was awarded a doctoral degree in 1899, and was ordained as the curate of the Church of Saint Nicholas in Strasbourg in 1900. A year later he became an official of the theological seminary of St. Thomas in that city - his own old college. His authorship of "The Quest for the Historical Jesus" (1906) brought him celebrity as a theological scholar.
Albert Schweitzer also gained international repute as an accomplished organist and authority on organ construction. His best-known musicological work, Johann Sebastian Bach, was published in French in 1905 and rewritten in German in 1908; an English translation appeared in 1911. In this work he emphasized the religious nature of Bach's music and advocated the simple, undistorted style of performing Bach's works that was accepted afterward as the standard type of presentation.    Following on from his reading about the medical needs of Africans in the Congo he decided to train in medicine so that he could serve as a medical missionary rather than as a pastor and between 1905-1913 he duly studied medicine and surgery at the University of Strasbourg.
