5. E. Donnall Thomas - Autobiography
E. donnall thomas – Autobiography. My father, Dr. Edward E. thomas was born in1870 and moved to Texas with his family in a covered wagon in 1874.
http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1990/thomas-autobio.html
My father, Dr. Edward E. Thomas was born in 1870 and moved to Texas with his family in a covered wagon in 1874. He grew up in frontier Texas and, with almost no formal schooling went to the University of Louisville, Kentucky, where he received his M. D. His first wife died of tuberculosis, and I was the only child of his second wife. He was 50 years old when I was born on March 15, 1920. He was a solo general practitioner in our small Texas village. Thus, together we span the time from horse and buggy house calls to modern high-tech medicine.
My high school class consisted of about 15 people. I was not an outstanding student even in this small group. I entered the University of Texas in Austin in 1937. In my first semester I made only B grades, but as time went on and the courses became more difficult and challenging I began to enjoy the studies, mainly in chemistry and chemical engineering. I received a B. A. in 1941 and an M. A. in 1943.
During my undergraduate years at the end of the depression money was almost non-existent so I worked at a number of odd jobs. One of the jobs was waiting tables at a girls' dormitory. One January morning it snowed, a rare event in Texas. As I emerged from the girls' dormitory, an attractive young woman hit me in the face with a snow ball. I naturally had to catch her and avenge the insult to my male ego. Thus, I meet Dorothy Martin, the Dottie who has participated in all my endeavors up to the present time. We have 3 children, Don Jr. who practices internal medicine in Montana, Jeffrey who is in business in Seattle and Elaine who is a Fellow in infectious diseases at the University of Washington. We have eight grandchildren.

Thomas, E. Donnall,
in full EDWARD DONNALL THOMAS (b. March 15, 1920, Mart, Texas, U.S.), American physician who in 1990 was corecipient (with Joseph E. Murray ) of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work in transplanting bone marrow from one person to anotheran achievement related to the cure of patients with leukemia and other blood cancers or blood diseases. Thomas studied at the University of Texas (B.A., 1941; M.A., 1943) and the Harvard Medical School (M.D., 1946). He served at a few hospitals and a research centre before becoming a professor of medicine at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons (1955-63) and the University of Washington School of Medicine (from 1963) in Seattle, where he was also associated with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. In 1956 Thomas performed the first successful bone marrow transplant between two humans: a leukemic patient and his identical twin. The recipient's body accepted the donated marrow and used it to make new, healthy blood cells and immune system cells. Thomas adopted methods to match the tissues of donor and recipient closely enough to minimize the latter's rejection of the former's marrow, and he also developed drugs to suppress the immune system. In 1969 these refinements enabled him to perform the first successful bone marrow transplant in a leukemia patient from a relative who was not an identical twin. Before his work, leukemia had invariably been a fatal disease. By 1990, as a result of his research, more than half of all leukemia patients could be expected to survive.

Residents have the option of selecting from a variety of types of projects and, work with time allocated to the project, under a Bassett physician or scientist. Alternatively, a resident may choose to design his/her own project. Residents have access to the extensive resources of the Bassett Research Institute It is the philosophy of the Department of Medicine that a resident who enters the research program will develop enhanced understanding of the medical literature, bring a unique expertise to practice and teaching, and develop special skills likely to make the resident more effective after completion of the residency whether as a clinician or researcher. All projects have access to funds designated for resident research allowing total expenditures of up to $25,000 at the discretion of the Research Review Committee. Research projects are displayed and presented at the annual E. Donnall Thomas Research Day. Residents whose projects demonstrate proficiency to the Resident Research Committee are recognized for their excellence in research with a certificate and have their names inscribed on a plaque. Residents are encouraged and supported to present projects at national scientific meetings.

Support Programs Research Institute Search Nobel Prize recipient Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, who was Physician-in-Chief at Bassett Hospital from 1955 to 1963 Bassett Healthcare's Research Institute has developed from a long history of innovative research dating back to the origins of the organization. Research is one of Bassett's founding missions along with education and patient care, allowing the attraction of dedicated and innovative staff. Many renowned researchers have been affiliated with Bassett, bringing national and international recognition to this institution. Early ambulation after surgery, a basis for today's "same-day" surgery, was conceived by Bassett surgeon Dr. John H. Powers in the 1940s. In the 1950s and 1960s, Drs. E. Donnall Thomas, Joseph Ferrebee and David Blumenstock pioneered innovative research in bone marrow transplantation, performing the world's first human organ transplant at Bassett in 1956. Dr. Thomas received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1990 for his work in transplantation. Other Nobelists with ties to Bassett include Dr. Christian Anfinsen and Dr. Jean Daussett. Studies by Dr. Theodore Peters, Jr. and Dr. Charles Ashley first explained the biosynthetic pathway of albumin, the major protein of blood plasma. Efforts to characterize albumin led to the discovery of a variant form of albumin, now known as "Albumin Cooperstown".

In Stockholm, Dr. Lee Hartwell (left) accepts the Nobel Prize from Swedish King Carl XVI. Coming of age in California in the 1950s, Lee Hartwell seemed an unlikely future prospect for a Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology. His life revolved around sports and cars.
However, as a young boy he had frequently asked how things, like the neon lights his father installed, worked. Bugs and reptiles had fascinated him, and he read about them in the local library. His desire to learn about the fundamental workings of the natural world resurfaced in his late teens, at about the time that he became unhappy with football and bored with his car club.
When Hartwell asked to attend a different high school, his mother moved the family to an apartment across town and near the school. There his teachers encouraged him. He found he liked math, physics, and mechanical drawing, and he considered becoming an engineer. Upon enrolling at Glendale Junior College, he became the first person in his family to attend college. Noticing his talent, his instructors helped him transfer to the California Institute of Technology.
He began his studies by isolating temperature-sensitive mutant yeast, and analyzing their cell division. Through this approach, which he continued after joining the UW faculty in 1968, he identified nearly 100 genes involved in cell cycle control, the cell division cycle (CDC) genes.
