Floor Speeches By
Congressman Bill Young DR. E. DONNALL THOMASPIONEER OF MARROW TRANSPLANTSHONORED WITH NOBEL PRIZE FOR MEDICINE HON. C.W. BILL YOUNG (Extension of Remarks - October 16, 1990)

  • Mr. YOUNG of Florida. Mr. Speaker, the Nobel Prize Committee has bestowed its highest honor in medicine this year to Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, the doctor who was a pioneer in discovering and perfecting the technique of marrow transplantation.
Over the past 5 years, I have risen many times to urge support for the National Marrow Donor Program, a modern medical miracle that gives the living gift of life to seriously ill children and adults who otherwise would have no hope.
Without the work of Dr. Thomas, his colleagues, and students he has worked with and inspired, there would be no National Marrow Donor Program and there would be no hope for thousands upon thousands of people who are alive today because a marrow transplant cured them of leukemia, cancer, immune deficiencies, or one of more than 60 other diseases treated today through marrow transplantation.
In making its award, the Nobel Prize Committee honored Dr. Thomas for `paving the way for transplantation in man' through his work of the past 40 years. Dr. Thomas began his research into marrow transplantation in the 1950's while at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1956, he was the first to show that marrow could be safely transplanted into a human patient. Soon after, he was the first to treat acute leukemia patients with marrow transplantation.

North American Scientists Sweep This Year's Nobel Prizes
By Angela Martello Date: November 12, 1990 Advances in transplant science, synthetic organic chemistry, and the study of quarks have allowed six North American scientists to sweep this year's three Nobel science prizes. E. Donnall Thomas, 70, and Joseph E. Murray, 71, shared the Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology for their work in transplant medicine. Thomas, director emeritus of the Seattle-based Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's Division of Clinical Research, was cited for his pivotal work on bone marrow transplantationa treatment often offered as a last hope for patients afflicted with various types of leukemia and other blood-related and genetic disorders. In 1956, Thomas successfully transplanted donor marrow into a human patient. Thomas's Nobel Prize came swiftly on the heels of another highly regarded award: He and six other researchers recently received the 1990 Gairdner Foundation International Awards in recognition of their contributions to medical science (see People, page 25 of this issue). Murray, professor of surgery, emeritus, at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, was recognized by the Nobel committee for his pioneering work in transplant medicine. In 1954, Murray performed the first successful kidney transplant between identical twins. He later championed the use of organs from deceased donors and demonstrated that the application of whole body irradiation could induce immunosuppression, thus reducing the risk that the recipient would reject the donated organ.

Citation Histories Attest To 1990 Nobelists' Wide Influence
By Angela Martello Date: November 26, 1990 What does it take to win a Nobel Prize in science? An in-depth look at the citation records of this year's Nobel winners affirms that it takes more than good science. Not only must a laureate's work cross the frontiers of researchit must also be disseminated throughout the international scientific community. The citation records of the six North Americans who clinched the 1990 awards in medicine, chemistry, and physics (The Scientist, Nov. 12, 1990, page 8) indicate the broad and decisive impact these eminent individuals have had in their fields. Medicine or Physiology Two medical doctors on opposite coasts of the continental United States shared this year's Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology. E. Donnall Thomas and Joseph E. Murray were honored for their breakthrough research in transplant medicine. Thomas, 70, director emeritus of the Seattle-based Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's Division of Clinical Research, was cited for his work on bone marrow transplantation. In 1956, Thomas successfully transplanted donor marrow into a human patient. During the next decade, Thomas and his group at the University of Washington developed ways to improve tissue typing to better match donors with hosts. They also worked on the problem of graft-versus-host disease, an autoimmune dys- function. In addition to the Nobel Prize, Thomas shared the 1990 Gairdner Foundation International Award with six other scientists in recognition of their contributions to medical science (The Scientist, Nov. 12, 1990, page 25). Throughout his career, Thomas has received numerous other honors, including the Kettering Prize of the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation (1981) and the Robert Roesler de Villiers Award from the Leukemia Society of America (1983). Had Thomas received the Gairdner award last year, he would have definitely made The Scientist's list of "nominees" for this year's Nobel in medicine or physiology (The Scientist, Oct. 1, 1990, page 17). That list was based on the combination of prizes won and citation histories.

Nobel Prize Winners Seek Stronger Support for Basic Science
The American Institute of Physics Bulletin of Science
Policy News Number 101: June 26, 1996 The letter, dated June 19, follows: "Dear President Clinton and Members of Congress: "As men and women who have helped to shape the modern scientific age and who care deeply about the future of our nation, we urge you to reaffirm the fundamental role of the federal government in supporting basic scientific research. "Americans have been awarded more than one-half of all Nobel Prizes in physics, chemistry and medicine since 1945. This impressive success is no accident, but the result of a firm and consistent commitment by the federal government to basic science research at our universities. Our nation's policymakers and public have been prudent investors because their support has paid off in tremendous ways. "America's investment in research over the last fifty years has been a vital source of our economic and political strength around the world, as well as the quality of life Americans enjoy at home. The polio vaccine, computers, jet propulsion and disease resistant grains and vegetables are some of the thousands of advances pioneered at our universities that have had dramatic benefits for our health, economy, security and quality of life. "New and equally breathtaking advances may be just around the corner. Genetic research, for example, gives promise of better treatments for Alzheimer's, cancer and other diseases. Lighter and stronger composite materials may be developed with important applications in transportation, medicine and the military. Continuing support for university-based research will not only pave the way for these important breakthroughs, but will also train the next generation of pioneers and Nobelists.

against the aggression on Croatia
Many people throughout the world contributed to the international recognition of Croatia (January 15, 1992). We would like to present a list of 104 Nobel prize winners (in alphabetic order) who signed an appeal to stop the aggression of the Yugoslav Army on Croatia that started in 1991 (The New York Times, January 14th, 1992). We do this we the feeling of deepest gratitude.
An Appeal by 104 Nobel Laureates
FOR PEACE IN CROATIA
During the past several weeks the Yugoslav Army has escalated its war against Croatia. Dozens of villages have been razed. Many historical monuments have been destroyed. Several cities, including Croatia's capital of Zagreb, have been bombed. Over 2,000* people have been killed. The undeclared war has already produced more than 100,000* refugees. The violence and destruction unleashed in Croatia is on a scale unknown in Europe since the Second World War. Innocent civilians are massacred. Hospitals and places of worship are destroyed. Conscience demands that we raise our voices against this senseless war.
  • We appeal to the Western and Eastern governments to stop the Yugoslav Army wanton destruction.
