Hutch scientist awarded Nobel: With baker's yeast, he helped unravel how cells divide By Warren King and Eric Sorensen
Seattle Times staff reporters TOM REESE / THE SEATTLE TIMES When Dr. Lee Hartwell first began studying baker's yeast cells, he and other scientists weren't all that confident the research would apply to human cells. Over 30 years, he has proved himself wrong in a big way. Yesterday, Hartwell, president of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, won the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Hartwell, also a professor of genetics and medicine at the University of Washington, won the most prestigious award in medicine for building understanding of how cells divide. He did it through pioneering research in the genetics of yeast cells, which are much easier to study than human cells. "His work has led to an explosion of knowledge. ... As a result, we have a deeper understanding of normal cellular functioning as well as the molecular basis of diseases like cancer and some birth defects, in which cell division goes awry," said Dr. Ruth Kirchstein, acting director of the National Institutes of Health. "We also have new directions to pursue in developing drugs to target these diseases."

Summer 1999
It was 3:40 a.m., a Monday morning in the fall of 1990, when an East Coast reporter called Dr. E. Donnall Thomas with the news. He and Dr. Joseph Murray, a longtime friend and pioneer in kidney transplantation, would share one of the world’s most prestigious honors. “At first I thought there was something wrong at the hospital, but then he was saying something about it just being announced – I had won the Nobel Prize,” says Thomas, whose forty years of bone marrow transplantation research was recognized by the award. “I thought someone might be playing a trick, but when he told me the co-winner was Joe Murray it started to make sense. So I sat there for about five minutes explaining marrow transplants to the reporter.” Don’s wife Dottie was perplexed as to why he was giving an interview at four in the morning, he recalls. “And I said, ‘Well, it looks like we won the Nobel Prize.”

FORTY NOBEL LAUREATES ANNOUNCE SUPPORT FOR `THERAPEUTIC CLONING'
Rare Public Statement Opposes Brownback Bill, Highlights Its Threats to the Fight Against Deadly Diseases, Chilling Effect on Scientific Research Washington, DC Forty American Nobel Laureates, including pioneers in research on cancer and other life-threatening diseases, today released a joint statement strongly supporting nuclear transplantation technology for research and therapeutic purposes (more commonly known as therapeutic cloning.) The statement cites the critical role this research could play in the fight against the most debilitating diseases known to man, and strongly opposes legislation proposed by Senator Brownback (R-KS) that would ban nuclear transplantation technology.
Senator Brownback's legislation, if it becomes law, would have a chilling effect on all scientific research in the United States, the Nobel Laureates say. "We decided to speak out to clear up the confusion that has arisen about this issue. Cloning humans and `therapeutic cloning' (or nuclear transplantation technology) are fundamentally different," said Paul Berg, who won the Nobel Prize in 1980. "The cloning of a human being should be prohibited. Nuclear transplantation technology, on the other hand, is meant to produce stem cells, not babies." "This impressive statement underlines what advocates for the 100 million Americans with life-threatening diseases have been saying: this really is a matter of life and death, said Michael Manganiello, president of the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research. Nuclear transplantation technology means hope. The Brownback bill would deny it."

Open Statement on Vaccines We invite medical and public health practitioners to endorse the Open Statement on Vaccines. To do so, please submit our online signatory response form or download a printable form that you can fax. We, the undersigned , support immunization as the safest, most effective way to control and eradicate infectious diseases. Infectious diseases were once prevalent in the United States, inflicting widespread suffering and death on young and old, rich and poor alike. Deadly diseases such as smallpox, polio, diphtheria and measles have, for the most part, become distant memories. Most of the credit goes to vaccines, medical miracles that many take for granted. Vaccination eradicated smallpox but the other diseases still exist. Without immunization, they quickly can return and cause widespread harm, as the examples below demonstrate. Although there are extremely rare instances of serious adverse reactions to vaccines, vaccines have a demonstrated record of safety and are held to the highest standard. Vaccines are rigorously tested for safety and effectiveness before licensure by the Food and Drug Administration, and their safety and purity are continuously monitored.

Counting the Nobel laureates... Does it prove what the Discovery Institute says it does?
by Wesley R. Elsberry In their viewer's guide pretentiously (and erroneously, as I will demonstrate below) titled, "Getting the Facts Straight", the Discovery Institute gives us this discussion: The narrator says that anti-evolution efforts following the Scopes trial "had a chilling effect on the teaching of evolution and the publishers of science textbooks. For decades, Darwin seemed to be locked out of America's public schools. But then evolution received an unexpected boost from a very unlikely source the Soviet Union." When the Soviets launched the first man-made satellite, Sputnik, in 1957, Americans were goaded into action. The narrator continues: "As long-neglected science programs were revived in America's classrooms, evolution was, too. Biblical literalists have been doing their best to discredit Darwin's theory ever since." This takes the distortion of history one giant step further. It is blatantly false that U.S. science education was "neglected" after the Scopes trial because Darwinism was "locked out of America's public schools." During those supposedly benighted decades, American schools produced more Nobel Prize-winners than the rest of the world put together. And in physiology and medicine the fields that should have been most stunted by a neglect of Darwinism the U.S. produced fully twice as many Nobel laureates as all other countries combined. How about the U.S. space program? Was it harmed by the supposed neglect of Darwinism in public schools? Contrary to what Evolution implies, the U.S. space program in 1957 was in good shape. The Soviet Union won the race to launch the first satellite because it had made that one of its highest national priorities. The U.S., on the other hand, had other priorities such as caring for its citizens and rebuilding a war-torn world. When Sputnik prodded Americans to put more emphasis on space exploration, the U.S. quickly surpassed the Soviet Union and landed men on the Moon. The necessary resources and personnel were already in place; the U.S. didn't have to wait for a new generation of rocket scientists trained in evolution.
