2. David Trimble - Nobel Lecture

Nobel Lecture, Oslo, December 10, 1998 Your Majesties, Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen. The Nobel Prize for peace normally goes to named persons. This year the persons named are John Hume and myself, two politicians from Northern Ireland. And I am honoured, as John Hume is honoured, that my name should be so singled out. But in one sense the singling of one or two persons, for a peace prize, must always seem something of an injustice. In Northern Ireland I could name scores of people, Unionist and nationalist, who deserve this prize far more than I do. Add to that the thousands of people who I do not know, but who have born witness, in their own lives, by carrying out what Wordsworth called, "those little nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love". And since I know there are thousands of such heroes and heroines in Northern Ireland, how many more millions of peacemakers must there be in the front line of the fight for peace across the globe. People who stand in the front line for peace in all the places where there is no peace - Bosnia, Kosovo, Gaza, Cyprus, Rwanda, Angola. Naturally it is not possible to name each and everyone of those heroes and heroines who make up the huge host of peacemakers who, even as we speak, are at work for peace around the world.

Nobel Peace Prize: Some said that it was premature
Like many of Northern Ireland's politicians, David Trimble has undertaken an immense political journey over the 30 years of the Troubles. In 1995, he appeared at the annual Drumcree parade, hand-in-hand with hardliner Ian Paisley before hundreds of Orangemen after they won the stand-off with the nationalist community of the Garvaghy Road.
We are deeply offended at the gratuitous insult to the community. This is the shoddiest piece of work I have seen in my public life
David Trimble on the Patten Commission Three years later, he became the first leader of the Ulster Unionists to negotiate with Sinn Fein. David Trimble was born in October 1944 and is married with four children. A barrister and Queen's University lecturer by profession, he has been accused by many in his own camp of being the man who sold out to republican terrorism. But to add to his problems, many nationalists and republicans have accused him of not really wanting to treat the Catholic community as equals.

Trimble on the Good Friday Agreement, 1998
As with many Northern Ireland politicians, David Trimble has undertaken an immense political journey over the 30 years of the Troubles. In 1995, he appeared at the annual Drumcree parade, hand-in-hand with hardliner Ian Paisley before hundreds of Orangemen after they won the stand-off with the nationalist community of the Garvaghy Road. Three years later he became the first leader of the Ulster Unionists to negotiate with Sinn Fein. However, his focus throughout 1999 on paramilitary decommissioning and the IRA's apparent refusal to disarm serves as a reminder that the Good Friday Agreement was only the first step on a long road towards building trust between the different communities of Northern Ireland. Mr Trimble, a barrister and Queen's University lecturer by profession, has been accused by many of his own camp of being the man who sold out to the Republicans.

    • Peace: John Hume and David Trimble (both Northern Ireland), whose efforts made possible Northern Ireland's Good Friday peace accord in 1998 and have led to political progress in a deep-rooted conflict. Hume is the leader of the Catholic Social Democratic and Labor Party, and Trimble heads the predominant Protestant Ulster Unionist Party. Literature: Physics: Daniel C. Tsui Chemistry: Walter Kohn (U.S.) and John A. Pople (U.K.) for their developments in the study of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved. Kohn's density-functional theory simplifies the mathematical explanation of the bonding between atoms within molecules, making it possible for scientists to study large, complex molecules. Pople was cited for his development of computer techniques that make it possible to create models of chemical reactions that cannot otherwise be recreated in the laboratory. Medicine: Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro, and Ferid Murad (all U.S.) for discovering that nitric oxide acts as a signal in the cardiovascular system. Their findings are relevant to the function of the recently popular anti-impotence drug Viagra, and will also have implications for the treatment of heart disease, shock, and other medical conditions.

The move threatened to topple the 1998 Good Friday peace agreement, thus returning governing powers to the British government from the Northern Irish coalition Parliament. Trimble, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998, sought to return to his post in October, after the IRA finally began to dismantle its weapons. Alejandro Toledo

NEWS FROM OUNDLE SCHOOL MICHAELMAS 2002 Two Nobel Prize Winners in Two Days! American scientist James D Watson and Northern Ireland First Minister David Trimble spoke to the Upper Sixth in the General Studies course, on consecutive days in March. Jim Watson is probably even more famous worldwide than Stephen Hawking, because of his discovery of the double-helix structure of D.N.A. in 1953, arguably the greatest scientific achievement of the twentieth century. He received the 1962 Nobel Medicine prize. Since then he has been a Harvard professor for twenty years, Director of the U.S.’s human genome project, and head of the most prestigious Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island, New York for the past 34 years. In his talk he emphasised the role of luck in his discovery and his disarming directness and modesty helped make one of the great stories of human achievement even more riveting. The other Nobel Prize winner David Trimble (Peace prize 1998), spoke the next night, wearing his hat as leader of Ulster’s beleaguered Protestant majority rather than as Northern Ireland’s First Minister. He impressed everyone enormously, and it was clear to all what qualities had just won him the title of "Best Parliamentarian of the Year". He told us Irish nationalism is a modern construct and gave some less than convincing reasons as to why Ireland, unlike Scotland, had not integrated into the United Kingdom. However his analysis of the IRA’s failure to win "The Long War" in Northern Ireland since 1968 was most persuasive.
