Yesterday it was put to him that IRA decommissioning would be all the more difficult to achieve against the background of the loyalist attacks on Catholic homes and the early morning murder of young Catholic Ciaran Cummings on his way to work in Antrim on Wednesday. He responded that republicans had been responsible for 30 murders since their ceasefire began. He went on to say there was good reason to suspect republicans were responsible for the Cummings murder - and to suggest it was drug related. The fact that the killing had been claimed by a dissident loyalist paramilitary group mattered little. Dead men can't sue. And thus, in death, Ciaran Cummings' good name was grist to the propaganda mill. It's not the first time David Trimble has muddied the waters in the wake of loyalist violence to the outrage of nationalists and republicans alike.

Many people chart the disintegration of the Peace People to the day in 1976 when they received the honour. It could be argued that by the autumn and winter of that year the Peace People had shot their bolt anyway by failing to condemn state violence with the same vehemence they had for the IRA's, but there can be little doubt that the squabble between Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan over whether they, or rather Betty, should keep the prize money - worth some £600,000 these days - was a killer blow which speeded up the Peace People's demise. John Hume and David Trimble are unlikely to fall out over money but nevertheless while many, naturally, have emphasised the positive influence the award may have on the still infant peace process, it would foolish to ignore the distinct chance that the Nobel Peace prize may have a down side. The first thing to be said about the award is that it has shocked the republican community which supported Gerry Adams all the difficult way through the process. It is not that they deny John Hume the honour - many praise him for standing by Adams during the early, dark and difficult days and deem him worthy of the prize - but that David Trimble got it and Gerry Adams didn't.

Z Or search the encyclopaedia: HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Trimble, David Northern Ireland politician, leader of the Ulster Unionist party (or Official Unionist Party, OUP) from 1995 and Northern Ireland's first minister from 1998. Representing the Upper Bann constituency in the House of Commons from 1990, he won the leadership of the OUP in August 1995, when James Molyneaux decided to retire at the age of 75. Trimble shared the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1998 with John Hume for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland, and was one of the leading negotiators in the creation of a cross-community government in Belfast which met for the first time in December 1999 as powers were devolved to the province by the British government. Trimble, originally seen as a hardliner and not likely to move easily into Molyneaux's seat, proved to be more flexible and tolerant than had been predicted. Following his election as OUP leader, he sought to give an impetus to the Northern Ireland peace process, meeting UK prime minister John Major, Irish taoiseach John Bruton, and US president Bill Clinton. Still emphasizing the need for the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to decommission its weaponry, he nevertheless suggested a route to all-party talks through elections, although this proposal was opposed by republican spokespersons.
