Northern Irish leaders share peace award Nobel prize raises hopes LONDON The British and Irish political elite united yesterday in praise of the Nobel Peace laureates, David Trimble and John Hume, amid hopes that the award would strengthen peace moves in Northern Ireland. But some of the province's pro-British Unionists warned that hurdles still stood in the way of lasting peace. The political wing of the Irish Republican Army, Sinn Fein, voiced approval of the award winners and said that Republicans seeking Irish unity could "share" in the prize, even though Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams had been omitted from the awards. British Prime Minister Tony Blair led the ovations for Mr Hume, who is leader of the moderate Catholic Social Democratic and Labour Party, and for Mr Trimble, the Protestant First Minister of Northern Ireland. "There could be no more worthy winners of the Nobel Peace Prize than David Trimble and John Hume," Mr Blair said in a statement. "This is a recognition of their courage and their qualities of leadership that were so vital in laying the road to peace. "It's a prize for democracy and a prize in which all the people in Northern Ireland can feel immense pride and credit."

Sinn Feinin johtaja Gerry Adams
Hume on vaikuttanut prosessiin pitkällä aikavälillä, Trimble kriittisessä vaiheessa", selitti Sejersted Nobel-komitean päätöstä.
Nobel-komitea korosti palkintoperusteluissaan myös muiden Pohjois-Irlannin johtajien, Britannian, Irlannin ja Yhdysvaltain hallitusten suurta myönteistä panosta rauhanprosessissa.

THE WORLDS OF POP AND POMP COLLIDE AT THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE CONCERT IN OSLO. BY GINA ARNOLD H Although this year's concert was somewhat overshadowed by the Amnesty International benefit concert held in Paris the night before, which drew the world music press to its gates with a bill boasting Radiohead, Peter Gabriel and Bruce Springsteen, the Nobel Peace Prize lineup featured Alanis Morissette, Shania Twain and Phil Collins, as well as several well-known international acts. One has to wonder if the Nobel laureates are as edified by Twain's presence as she is by theirs. During last Friday's three-hour event, there were many times when I eyed both Trimble, Hume and His Royal Highness, King Harald of Norway, and wondered what they were thinking. Well, I can only imagine what they were thinking about Shania Twain, who's extreme prettiness overshadows anything else she does. But is there not an unintentional trivialization that takes place when you add pop to pomp? Though that was my initial thesis, when the concert was over I had to revise my thesis. The Nobel Prize may have dignity on its side, but pop music has a power all its own a power that can, in certain situations, work its own kind of miracle.

Mr. Hume, 61, head of the Social Democratic and Labour Party, was cited by the Nobel committee in Oslo for having been "the dearest and most consistent of Northern Ireland's political leaders in his work for a peaceful solution." Mr. Trimble, 54, leader of the Ulster Unionists, was honored for having demonstrated "great political courage when, at a critical stage in the process, he advocated solutions which led to the peace agreement." A leader of a third prominent party, Gerry Adams of Sinn Fein, the political ally of the Irish Republican Army, was not named as a prize winner. The accord, signed April 10 and known as the Good Friday Agreement, has given the 1.7 million residents of Ulster a respite from the sectarian violence that claimed, more than 3,200 lives in the last 30 years and the possibility of lasting stability for the first time since the establishment of Northern Ireland with partition from Ireland in 1921. Forging concessions from fiercely antagonistic communities, the ongoing accord seeks to balance the Protestant majority's wish to remain part of Britain with Catholic desires to strengthen ties to the Irish Republic to the south. The committee, seeing in Northern Ireland's two warring communities a dispute with notable similarities to violent confrontations elsewhere, expressed the hope that the Good Friday Agreement would serve "to inspire peaceful solutions to other religious, ethnic and national conflicts around the world."

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

Trimble stands by remarks on Republic The Ulster Unionist leader has defended comments he made at the weekend in a speech at a meeting of the party's ruling Council. David Trimble said that the Republic was a pathetic, sectarian, and mono-cultural state.
Speaking to reporters at Stormont this morning, he said it was something he had said many times before. He claimed Nationalists and others had been overreacting and taking the comments out of context.
He repeated that the contrast was between what he said was a liberal, multinational State, such as the United Kingdom, and a mono-cultural State, which as not as liberal as the UK.
The SDLP's Bríd Rodgers has asked Mr Trimble to withdraw the remarks and her party leader Mark Durkan said they were gratuitously offensive and unbecoming of a party leader.
The Sinn Féin chairman, Mitchel McLaughlin, called on Mr Trimble to apologise. The Deputy leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, Peter Robinson, said the comments were unfair to a society.

Geography
Northern Ireland is composed of 26 districts, derived from the boroughs of Belfast and Londonderry and the counties of Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry, and Tyrone. Together they are commonly called Ulster, though the territory does not include the entire ancient province of Ulster. It is slightly larger than Connecticut.
Government
Northern Ireland is an integral part of the United Kingdom (it has 12 representatives in the British House of Commons), but under the terms of the Government of Ireland Act in 1920, it had a semiautonomous government. In 1972, however, after three years of sectarian violence between Protestants and Catholics that resulted in more than 400 dead and thousands injured, Britain suspended the Ulster Parliament. The Ulster counties were governed directly from London after an attempt to return certain powers to an elected assembly in Belfast. As a result of the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, a new coalition government was formed on Dec. 2, 1999, with the British government formally transferring governing power to the Northern Irish Parliament. David Trimble, Protestant leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) and winner of the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize, became first minister.

Cabinet Secretary, Nobel Laureate Among Those to be Honored at Commencement
United States Energy Secretary Bill Richardson, a former United Nations ambassador who as a diplomatic trouble-shooter helped free prisoners in Bangladesh, Cuba and Iraq, will deliver the main address and receive an honorary degree at Boston College's 123rd Commencement Exercises on May 24 in Alumni Stadium. Nobel Peace Prize winner David Trimble, Boston Celtic legend Bill Russell, author and National Book Award winner Alice McDermott, and Boston Foundation CEO Anna Faith Jones also will receive honorary degrees. University President William P. Leahy, SJ, noted that all those receiving honorary degrees at this year's Commencement have achieved much and have used their talents for the good of others. "Secretary Richardson, Anna Faith Jones, Alice McDermott, Bill Russell and David Trimble have worked to make our world a better place, and in doing so, they offer both inspiration and challenge to all of us at Boston College," Fr. Leahy said. Richardson, the highest-ranking Hispanic in the Clinton Administration, became the first person in history to hold two Cabinet posts at the same time when he took over as energy secretary in August 1998 while still serving as US ambassador to the United Nations. He has served as President Clinton's special envoy on many sensitive diplomatic missions and has been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize. Richardson is a former Democratic congressman, elected eight times to the House of Representatives from New Mexico's 3rd District. He is a graduate of Tufts University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at Commencement.
