Abelard
Abelard, Peter, dialectician, philosopher, and theologian, b. 1079; d. 1142. Peter Abelard (also spelled Abeillard, Abailard, etc., while the best MSS. have Abaelardus) was born in the little village of Pallet, about ten miles east of Nantes in Brittany. His father, Berengar, was lord of the village, his mother's name was Lucia; both afterwards entered the monastic state. Peter, the oldest of their children, was intended for a military career, but, as he himself tells us, he abandoned Mars for Minerva, the profession of arms for that of learning. Accordingly, at an early age, he left his father's castle and sought instruction as a wandering scholar at the schools of the most renowned teachers of those days.
ency was to disinherit reason in favour of contemplation and ecstatic vision. And it is true that if the principles "Reason aids Faith" and "Faith aids Reason" are to be taken as the inspiration of scholastic theology, Abelard was constitutionally inclined to emphasize the former, and not lay stress on the latter. Pierre Abelard : Historia Calamitatum
The Story of My Misfortunes
translated by Henry Adams Bellows
Peter Abelard (1079-1142) was one of the great intellectuals of the 12th century, with especial importance in the field of logic. His tendency to disputation is perhaps best demonstrated by his book Sic et Non , a list of 158 philosophical and theological questions about which there were divided opinions. This dialectical method of intellectual reflection - also seen in Gratian's approach to canon law - was to become an important feature of western education and distinguishes it sharply from other world cultures such as Islam and the Confucian world. Abelard's mistake was to leave the questions open for discussion and so he was repeatedly charged with heresy. For a long period all his works were included in the later Iindex of Forbidden Books. The text here gives a good account of Abelard's pugnaciousness. The Historia Calamitatum , although in the literary form of a letter, is a sort of autobiography, with distinct echoes of Augustine's

(Peter of Poitiers, Petrus Scholasticus). A French writer who flourished about the middle of the twelfth century. From the second name we may, perhaps, infer that Poitiers was his native place. He was a disciple of Abelard, and is celebrated chiefly for his vigorous defence of his master in a letter which he addressed to St. Bernard after Abelard's condemnation at the Council of Soissons in 1141. Later on he wandered through the Cevennes Mountains, hunted, he tells us, not by wild beasts, but by the Christian faithful of the Diocese of Mende, who apparently took sides with St. Bernard. Those attacks were the occasion of a letter which he directed to the Bishop of Mende, and in which he retracted all that he had said against "the man of God Remusat, Abelard (Paris, 1855), I, 234 sqq.; Cousin, Petri Abaelardi opera (Paris, 1859), II, 771 sqq.; Vacandard in Dict. de theol. cath., s. v. Pierre Abelard (1079 CE – 1142 CE) Also spelled Ableillard, Abailard. Pierre Abelard, know as the most wide-ranging philosopher of the twelfth century, was a dialectician, theologian, and at the same time a defender of pagan tradition despite his affiliation with the church. By Jean Vignaud, Abelard and Heloise Surprised by Abbot Fulbert Biography Abelard was born in a small village of Le Pallet, about ten miles outside of the much larger town of Nantes, in France. He was born into a noble and religious family. His mother, Lucia, and his father, Berengar, who was lord of the village, both entered the Church as clergy after his birth. Pierre, the oldest child, originally intended to join the military but as a teenager he left his father’s castle and began his quest of learning. Roscelin the Nominalist . He then traveled to Paris and began to excel at the Cathedral School, the school of Mt. Ste. Genevieve, and the school of St. Germaine des Pre. These schools were known as the most prestigious of the time. This is where he gained his knowledge of dialectics under the renowned teacher William of Champeaux . Abelard became so effecicant in the study that he set out not only to object to his revered teacher, but also to set up a school to rival William of Champeaux. Finding difficulty in establishing a school in Paris, he succeeded in establishing schools in Melun and then in Corbeil, circa 1101.
