ROBERT ADAMSON PAPERS
Date range: 1870s-1890s. Papers of Robert Adamson (1852-1902), philosopher, Professor of Logic and Mental and Moral Philosophy, 1876-1893, and Professor of Political Economy, 1876-1882, at Owens College (later the University of Manchester). Adamson took a prominent role in the administration of the Victoria University, serving as secretary, and later treasurer, of the Board of Studies, and he was an advocate of the admission of women on equal terms with men. Although unlisted, the papers are sufficiently compact to be readily accessible. They include notebooks and manuscripts on logic and philosophy, and also on the working class and other contemporary social themes. There are also transcriptions of writings by the logician and philosopher, Rudolf Hermann Lotze. Adamson was an innovative thinker and his papers are an important source for studies of the development of philosophy. Finding aids: unlisted. Location: JRULM (Deansgate).

ADAMSON ROBERT (1821-1848) ADAMSON Scotch chemist. Born in 1821, worked on photography on its beginning, using the method of calotypia. His successful collaboration with David Hill proved immediately the expressive power of photography. During the 5 years of their collaboration, they produced about 1500 photographs, which were enough for them to be considered masters among the greatest photographers. Unfortunately, his early death in 1945 stopped a very creative collaboration. FOR MORE INFORMATION'S LOOK IN THOSE ADDRESSES http://special.lib.gla.ac.uk http://www.lib.gla.ac.uk Home Gallery ... Rock House
Robert Adamson was instructed in the calotype process by his brother, John Adamson, at St Andrews in 1841-42. He moved to Rock House, Calton Hill, Edinburgh in 1843. There he established his calotype business, and was joined a few months later by David Octavius Hill , following an introduction by Sir David Brewster DO Hill pages on this web site. Hill was the artist and probably responsible for bringing most of the sitters to Rock House studio.
ADDRESS: The address of Rock House was given as 28 Calton Hill in some directories.
A Secret Ingredient?
However, the work of Robert Adamson in obtaining the remarkable images should not be underestimated. A remark that has often been quoted is that "Mr Adamson knows some things that others do not." Whether or not Robert Adamson had any particular secret or secret ingredient may become clearer as a result of research currently underway at the Royal Scottish Museum.

Robert Adamson
Photographer. Born in St. Andrews, the son of a farmer. With the encouragement of scientist David Brewster (1781 - 1868) and his brother John Adamson (1809-70), he reproduced the Englishman Fox-Talbot's Calotype photographic process. He moved to Edinburgh in 1843, setting up a studio on Calton Hill, and was introduced to David Hill (1802-70) with whom he formed a noted photographic partnership. The pair began by recording the participants in the Disruption of the Church of Scotland (1843).

ADAMSON, Robert b. 1821; d. 14 January 1848 Little is known about him, his brother, John, being relatively famous. Poor health prevented him from following an engineering career. He had a short business association with David Octavius Hill . In this partnership it would appear that Adamson was predominantly the technician, Hill the artist, and indeed when calotypes were exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, artistic credit was given to Hill, the photography to Adamson. The partnership arose from the need to make a record of a large number of people who were the founding fathers of the Free Church of Scotland (see Hill), but in fact their work consists of much more than that. There are numerous portraits, there are pictures which give us some glimpse of the times in which they lived, and some splendid landscape pictures. The partnership was short, lasting only four years or so, and broken by Adamson's early death at the age of twenty-seven. Nevertheless it was a remarkably productive one, and quite stunning photographs still remain. © Robert Leggat, 2000

The partnership of David Octavius Hill (1802-1870) and Robert Adamson (1821-1848) is one of the most significant and intriguing in the history of photography. The art of photography was announced to the public in 1839. Just four years later, in 1843, Robert Adamson established his studio in Rock House, on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. It was to be the site of some of the most sophisticated photography ever created - in early years on through to the present day.
The Adamson Family, mid 1840s, HA0336. Robert Adamson is seated on the far right. Robert Adamson had enjoyed an intense upbringing in the fledgling art at St Andrews. His brother, Dr John Adamson, was a colleague and close friend of Sir David Brewster. Brewster had a unique relationship with the inventor of photography on paper, William Henry Fox Talbot . The two scientists shared information and experiences in photography with a freedom and openness unknown elsewhere in the beginning days of the art. Robert Adamson, trained as an engineer and very clever indeed, was the full beneficiary of a legacy of innovative experimental information. This was critical at a time when all photographic materials were made by the photographer himself. The painter, David Octavius Hill, was highly popular and influential in the Edinburgh artistic community. His brother, Alexander Hill, was a premier publisher of prints. Between them, they had extensive contacts with society in Edinburgh and beyond.

17. A History Of Photography, By Robert Leggat: HILL And ADAMSON
HILL and adamson. Octavius Hill and robert adamson were partners in the earliestdays of photography, their earliest known photograph being dated August 1843.
http://www.rleggat.com/photohistory/history/hillanda.htm
HILL and ADAMSON Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson were partners in the earliest days of photography, their earliest known photograph being dated August 1843. Photographers of the day were either artistically inclined or had a strong scientific background, and this partnership was an ideal combination: Adamson was mainly responsible for the more mechanistic aspects of the process (exposure, development and printing), and Hill for the direction, posing and lighting. That, at least, is the way Hill saw it, though it is likely that Adamson, too, had an artistic bent. Restrictions on the Calotype process imposed by Fox Talbot had arrested the development of photography in England, but since the patent did not apply to Scotland these two early photographers were able, in a very short partnership, to produce a considerable number of pictures. At this period, of course, sunlight was necessary, so even the interior photography will have been outside, with suitable props. In order to prevent movement on the part of the sitters all sorts of strategies were needed to keep them still. In "The Bird Cage" for example, the girl in the foreground has her hand firmly on the cage, the girl to the right has her hand fixed on the shoulder of her companion, and her back is against the doorway. The little tell-tale shadows suggests that the girl at the back also had her head cradled - such devices were not uncommon then.

It is matter for regret to the student that Adamson's active labours in the lecture room precluded him from systematic production. His writings consisted of short articles, of which many appeared in the Encyclopaedia Britannica (gth ed.) and in Mind, a volume on Kant and another on Fichte. At the time of his death he was writing a History of Psychology, and had promised a work on Kant and the Modern Naturalists. Both in his h'fe ADAM'S PEAK, a mountain in Ceylon, about 45 miles E. from Colombo, in N. lat. 6° 55', E. long. 80° 30'. It rises steeply to a height of 7352 feet, and commands a magnificent prospect. Its conical summit terminates in an oblong platform, 74 ft. by 24, on which there is a hollow, resembling the form of a human foot, 5 ft. 4 in. by 2 ft. 6 in.; and this has been consecrated as the footprint of Buddha. The margin of this supposed footprint is ornamented with gems, and a wooden canopy protects it from the weather. It is held in high veneration by the Sinhalese, and numerous pilgrims ascend to the sacred spot, where a priest resides to receive their offerings and bless them on their departure. By the Mahommedans the impression is regarded as that of the foot of Adam, who here, according to their tradition, fulfilled a penance of one thousand years; while the Hindus claim it as that of their god Siva.
