St. Thomas Aquinas Summa contra gentiles. 1259 found Aquinas leaving Paris for Naples, where he stayed until the Fall of 1261 as head of the Dominican house of studies. From September of that same year to September of 1265, Aquinas was at Orvieto as a lector, where he completed the Summa contra gentiles. After a time at Rome in 1265 and Viterbo in 1267 (his great work, the Summa theologiae was begun in 1266), he took up his second Parisian regency from January of 1269 to 1272. This was followed by his assignment to Naples in 1272 as regent of theology. December 6, 1273 saw the cessation of his writing, after a mystical experience, coupled with a physical and mental breakdown from years of overwork. While going north to attend the Council of Lyon, Thomas injured his head, fell ill and died in the Cistercian abbey of Fossanova on March 7, 1274. The sculpture of St. Thomas Aquinas, pictured above, was fashioned by Father Bednar. If you would like more information concerning it, please contact the Maritain Center at Notre Dame.

Academics STU Home An Innovative Programme St. Thomas University is widely recognized for leadership in liberal arts education. Here, you will find a comprehensive arts programme with courses in some 40 disciplines. In addition to traditional majors and honours programmes, you will have access to a broad range of cutting-edge interdisciplinary options. The Aquinas Programme is one of our most exciting innovations in interdisciplinary study. If you are looking for an intellectual adventure, an opportunity to learn in a very different way from high school, the Aquinas Programme is for you.
The Aquinas Distinction First-year students in all undergraduate programmes at St. Thomas University typically take five separate full-year courses (or the equivalent) in five different subjects, or disciplines. An alternative to the regular curriculum, the Aquinas Programme offers an integrated and interdisciplinary learning experience. In this programme, three of your courses will be offered together in one section and focus on a common theme or issue. In the Great Books section of Aquinas, for example, students will consider from the perspectives of the disciplines of Political Science, Philosophy, and English such questions as: What is love? What is friendship? What is knowledge? Likewise, instead of taking separate courses in Sociology, Religious Studies, and Science and Technology Studies, students in the

SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS CONFESSOR, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH—1226-1274 Feast: January 28 A few miles to the south of Roccasecca, on a high plateau, stands the most famous of Italian monasteries, Monte Cassino,[l] the abbot of which, at the time, was Thomas' uncle. When he was about nine years old the boy was sent to Cassino, in care of a tutor, to be educated in the Benedictine school which adjoined the cloister. In later years, when Thomas had achieved renown, the aged monks liked to recall the grave and studious child who had pored over their manuscripts, and who would ask them questions that revealed his lively intelligence and his deeply religious bent. Thomas was popular too with his companions, though he seldom took part in their games. He spent five happy years in the school at Cassino, returning home now and again to see his parents. On the advice of the abbot, when Thomas had reached the age of fourteen, he went to the University of Naples to begin the seven years' undergraduate course prescribed in all European universities. He lived with his tutor, who continued to supervise his life. Under a famous teacher, Peter Martin, Thomas went through the Trivium, the three-year preliminary training in logic, rhetoric, and grammar, which also included the study of Latin literature and Aristotle's logic.[2] This was followed by four years of the Quadrivium, which comprised advanced work in mathematics, music, geometry, and astronomy or astrology. In addition to these subjects, there was also some study of physics under a celebrated scholar, Peter of Ireland, and extensive reading in philosophy. It was then the custom for pupils to recapitulate to the class a lecture they had just heard. Thomas' fellow students observed that, when his turn came, the summary he gave was usually clearer and better reasoned than the original discourse had been.

st thomas aquinas (12251274). Patron Saint of schools and universities.As the schools and universities start a new academic year
http://www.stpetersnottingham.org/saints/aquinas.htm
St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)
Patron Saint of schools and universities As the schools and universities start a new academic year, perhaps it is appropriate to say a word or two about the patron saint of these institutions. Thomas was an intellectual, often described as the greatest of medieval philosophers;
  • a theologian whose influence persists today a university teacher who brought system and order to (at that time) a rather chaotic hit and miss approach to education and a Dominican friar of profound piety.
He was born near Aquino about 1225, one of many children of a Lombardi nobleman. His search for clarity in understanding was evident as a child when he apparently asked his teacher, "What is God?" He studied at Monte Casino and Naples where he decided to become a mendicant friar. His noble relatives were so shocked that they locked him up for a year in the vain hope of inducing him to change his mind. As a Dominican friar he studied under St Albert the Great at Cologne and gained a master’s degree in theology in 1256. The rest of his comparatively short life was spent in teaching, preaching and above all in writing. He taught in Cologne, Paris and Naples and died in 1274 on his way to the General Council at Lyons. Academic freedom As noted in a previous article (on Meister Eckhart Perfection for Thomas meant perfect charity. But he insisted that love by itself cannot unite us with God - love motivates the mind to approach God. He also maintained that God is ultimately incomprehensible but, by clarifying all that we can understand, we can come face to face with the mystery of God.

Special thanks to the Microsoft Corporation for their contribution to our site.  The following information came from Microsoft Encarta. Here is a hyperlink to the Microsoft Encarta home page.   http://www.encarta.msn.com Early Years Study of Aristotle and the Averroists Later Years Aquinas first suggested his mature position in the treatise De Unitate Intellectus Contra Averroistas (1270; trans. The Trinity and the Unicity of the Intellect, 1946). This work turned the tide against his opponents, who were condemned by the church. Aquinas left Paris in 1272 and proceeded to Naples, where he organized a new Dominican school. In March 1274, while traveling to the Council of Lyon, to which he had been commissioned by Pope Gregory X, Aquinas fell ill. He died on March 7 at the Cistercian monastery of Fossanova. Aquinas was canonized by Pope John XXII in 1323 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius V in 1567. Assessment More successfully than any other theologian or philosopher, Aquinas organized the knowledge of his time in the service of his faith. In his effort to reconcile faith with intellect, he created a philosophical synthesis of the works and teachings of Aristotle and other classic sages; of Augustine and other church fathers; of Averroës, Avicenna, and other Islamic scholars; of Jewish thinkers such as Maimonides and Solomon ben Yehuda ibn Gabirol; and of his predecessors in the Scholastic tradition. This synthesis he brought into line with the Bible and Roman Catholic doctrine.
