e-mail: simon@suffolkchurches.co.uk St Augustine of Hippo, Ipswich This is a large 1920's estate church on the south-eastern outskirts. Diocesan architect Munro Cautley observed the letter of Suffolk Decorated and Perpendicular rather than the spirit. Consequently, the church looks rather dumpy in its concrete rendering. Grander than his St Andrew , it has none of the spirit of its age that you find at contemporary near neighbour All Hallows Mock-Perpendicular rises above mock-Tudor on the Bucklesham Road. Still, this is a landmark building, and it is light and airy inside. It contains the bell from the now-vanished church of St Peter, Linstead Magna , which was derelicted the year before St Augustine was built. Supposedly, the font is from there, too. But it seems possible that the Linstead Magna font was moved to St Margaret, Linstead Parva , and St Augustine inherited the old font from Linstead Parva. A bit like one of those party games. Cautley takes himself rather seriously in south-east Ipswich.

No book except the Bible itself had a greater influence on the Middle Ages than Augustine's The City of God. And since medieval Europe was the cradle of modern Western society, this work is vital for understanding our world and how it came into being. Augustine's influence was profound on Luther and Calvin in their formulation of the protestant reformation. The wisdom of this great man penetrates through every page. Alas for our generation to come to know this great wisdom but be humbled by our own inability to imitate.

Augustine of Hippo
(Redirected from St. Augustine Augustine of Hippo , born A.D. , Tagaste; died August 28 Hippo Regius (modern Bone, Algeria
Life
Augustine was raised in Roman north Africa, educated in Carthage and employed as a professor of rhetoric in Milan by 383. He followed the Manichaean religion in his student days, and was converted to Christianity by the preaching and example of Ambrose of Milan. He was baptized at Easter in 387, and returned to north Africa and created an monastic foundation at Tagaste for himself and a group of friends. In 391 he was ordained a priest in Hippo. He became a famous preacher (more than 350 preserved sermons are believed to be authentic), and noted for combatting the Manichaean heresy. In 396 he was made coadjutor bishop of Hippo (assistant with the right of succession on the death of the current bishop), and remained as bishop in Hippo until his death in 430. He left his monastery, but continued to lead a monastic life in the episcopal residence. He left a Rule (

IV/V Centuries Although his mother, St. Monica, was a Christian, Augustine grew up to be a highbrow playboy, a professor of rhetoric who joined the fashionable Manichee religion. Then he met St. Ambrose of Milan, became a Christian, and returned to his native Africa. From the Orthodox point of view, St. Augustine's legacy is controversial. In the West, it would be impossible to overestimate the impact of his writings, starting in his own lifetime, and by the VI Century he was regarded as one of the greatest Latin Fathers, revered by Western saints whose Orthodoxy has never been questioned in the East. On the other hand, nearly all of those ideas which are most distinctively Augustinian in particular his views on the Trinity, on original sin, and on predestination have subsequently been rejected by the Orthodox Church, and are among the distinguishing points between Eastern and Western Christianity. Thus some Orthodox consider him not a saint, but an heresiarch. This view, however, is probably the minority one; it is hard to reconcile with the esteem in which Augustine was held by pre-Schism saints. More often, St. Augustine's errors are cited as the foremost example of

http://www.episcopalnet.org/READINGS/Hippo/Patience.html
St. Augustine of Hippo's
On Patience [De Patientia]
5. When therefore thou shall see any man suffer aught patiently, do not straightway praise it as patience; for this is only shown by the cause of suffering. When it is a good cause, then is it true patience: when that is not polluted by lust, then is this distinguished from falsity. But when that is placed in crime, then is this much misplaced in name. For not just as all who know are partakers of knowledge, just so are all who suffer partakers of patience: but they which rightly use the suffering, these in verity of patience are praised, these with the prize of patience are crowned. 20. Let thus much have been said with regard to charity, without which in us there cannot be true patience, because in good men it is the love of God which endureth all things, as in bad men the lust of the world. But this love is in us by the Holy Spirit which was given us. Whence, of Whom cometh in us love, of Him cometh patience. But the lust of the world, when it patiently bears the burdens of any manner of calamity, boasts of the strength of its own will, like as of the stupor of disease, not robustness of health. This boasting is insane: it is not the language of patience, but of dotage. A will like this in that degree seems more patient of bitter ills, in which it is more greedy of temporal good things, because more empty of eternal.

Life of St. Augustine of Hippo
The great St. Augustine's life is unfolded to us in documents of unrivaled richness, and of no great character of ancient times have we information comparable to that contained in the "Confessions," which relate the touching story of his soul, the "Retractations," which give the history of his mind, and the "Life of Augustine," written by his friend Possidius, telling of the saint's apostolate. We will confine ourselves to sketching the three periods of this great life: (1) the young wanderer's gradual return to the Faith; (2) the doctrinal development of the Christian philosopher to the time of his episcopate; and (3) the full development of his activities upon the Episcopal throne of Hippo. I. FROM HIS BIRTH TO HIS CONVERSION (354-386) Augustine was born at Tagaste on 13 November, 354. Tagaste, now Souk-Ahras, about 60 miles from Bona (ancient Hippo-Regius), was at that time a small free city of proconsular Numidia which had recently been converted from Donatism. Although eminently respectable, his family was not rich, and his father, Patricius, one of the curiales Once won over to this sect, Augustine devoted himself to it with all the ardour of his character; he read all its books, adopted and defended all its opinions. His furious proselytism drew into error his friend Alypius and Romanianus, his Mæcenas of Tagaste, the friend of his father who was defraying the expenses of Augustine's studies. It was during this Manichæan period that Augustine's literary faculties reached their full development, and he was still a student at Carthage when he embraced error. His studies ended, he should in due course have entered the

Augustine's Confessions
by
St. Augustine
The Confessions of Augustine, Augustine of Hippo (Lafayette, IN: Sovereign Grace), paper.
This book is very personal, in fact it is his litany of repentance, and every reader should feel the urge to join him in confessing sin against a holy and gracious God.
The Confessions of St. Augustine is a noteworthy Christian classic. Written 1,600 years ago, as an autobiography, this book shows the work of the Lord's grace in irresistibly drawing Augustine to Himself.
The book exposes Augustine's innermost questions about life, his relationships with his closest personal acquaintances, and the events, people, and Scripture God employed in his conversion.
Although this book provides us with rich insight into the life and times of one of the greatest theologians and prolific writers of Christ's church, it also teaches us great lessons about the total depravity of man and the awfulness of sin.
Young (unbelieving) Augustine's ungodly, sinful lifestyle, is eventually productive of his realization of sin's dominion over him, his apprehension of God's mercy in Christ. His struggle with sin should be instructive to every believer. Augustine had known the temptations to sin, the power of sin, the consequences of sin, and his own personal wretchedness. He was deeply grateful for his glorious salvation and the brethren God used in effectually calling him to Himself.

by: ST. AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO
  • "But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law will he meditate by day and by night (ver. 2). The law is not made for a righteous man," 4 says the Apostle. But it is one thing to be in the law, another under the law. Whoso is in the law, acteth according to the law; whoso is under the law, is acted upon according to the law: the one therefore is free, the other a slave. Again, the law, which is written and imposed upon the servant, is one thing; the law, which is mentally discerned by him who needeth not its "letter," is another thing. "He will meditate by day and by night," is to be understood either as without ceasing; or "by day" in joy," by night" in tribulations. For it is said, "Abraham saw my day, and was glad:" and of tribulation it is said, "my reins also have instructed me, even unto the night."
  • "For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous" (ver. 6). As it is said, medicine knows health, but knows not disease, and yet disease is recognised by the art of medicine. In like manner can it be said that "the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous," but the way of the ungodly He knoweth not. Not that the Lord is ignorant of anything, and yet He says to sinners, "I never knew you." "But the way of the ungodly shall perish;" is the same as if it were said, the way of the ungodly the Lord knoweth not. But it is expressed more plainly that this should be not to be known of the Lord, namely, to "perish;" and this to be known of the Lord, namely, to "abide;" so as that to be should appertain to the knowledge of God, but to His not knowing not to be. For the Lord saith, "I AM that I AM," and, "I AM hath sent me."
