OF TRUTH
To pass from theological, and philosophical truth, to the truth of civil business; it will be acknowledged, even by those that practise it not, that clear, and round dealing, is the honor of man's nature; and that mixture of falsehoods, is like alloy in coin of gold and silver, which may make the metal work the better, but it embaseth it. For these winding, and crooked courses, are the goings of the serpent; which goeth basely upon the belly, and not upon the feet. There is no vice, that doth so cover a man with shame, as to be found false and perfidious. And therefore Montaigne saith prettily, when he inquired the reason, why the word of the lie should be such a disgrace, and such an odious charge? Saith he, If it be well weighed, to say that a man lieth, is as much to say, as that he is brave towards God, and a coward towards men. For a lie faces God, and shrinks from man. Surely the wickedness of falsehood, and breach of faith, cannot possibly be so highly expressed, as in that it shall be the last peal, to call the judgments of God upon the generations of men; it being foretold, that when Christ cometh, he shall not find faith upon the earth.
OF DEATH
bestowed too much cost upon death, and by their great preparations, made it appear more fearful. Better saith he qui finem vitae extremum inter munera ponat naturae. It is as natural to die, as to be born; and to a little infant, perhaps, the one is as painful, as the other. He that dies in an earnest pursuit, is like one that is wounded in hot blood; who, for the time, scarce feels the hurt; and therefore a mind fixed, and bent upon somewhat that is good, doth avert the dolors of death. But, above all, believe it, the sweetest canticle is, Nunc dimittis; when a man hath obtained worthy ends, and expectations. Death hath this also; that it openeth the gate to good fame, and extinguisheth envy. -Extinctus amabitur idem.

44. BACON Chancelier Francis (1561-1626)
Texte sur francis bacon (vie et pens©e).
http://histoirechimie.free.fr/Lien/BACONF.htm

Review A steamy sevenyear chunk of francis bacon's life.

Timid top George Dyer meets
pushy bottom Francis Bacon,
with art and death the inevitable result.
BY GARY MORRIS In a typical moment in this artful biopic of Francis Bacon, the ultra-queer painter strolls into his favorite pub, eyes the motley crowd of queens and fag hags, and grandly toasts, "Welcome to the concentration of camp!" Love Is the Devil is filled with such sentiments, apparently trawled from Bacon's own words, which like his personality could be vicious or inspiring and sometimes both at once. Love Is the Devil is as good as it is, which is to say good indeed, is a testament to director John Maybury's skill in manipulating this tricky material and Derek Jacobi's brilliance in interpreting the role of Bacon. Director Maybury, an artist himself who worked with Derek Jarman When Bacon isn't getting solace from George's teary-eyed buttfucking or a beating by a blonde waiter who looks like a walking Nazi recruitment poster, he's ensconced in the airless space of the local gay bar. This is the arena whose nervous energy he seems to be most at home in. Churlish fag hag Muriel (Tilda Swinton looking inexplicably like her mouth was mauled by a grizzly) reassuringly calls him "daughter"; she in turn is dished by another, disfavored queen who tells her, "I'll talk to you after you have a shave." All the while Bacon pontificates, regales, and insults this jaded coterie, raising even their drawn-on eyebrows when he gives a toast worthy of James Joyce: "Champagne for my real friends; real pain for my sham friends."

49. Last Tango In Paris
Analysis by Todd Stabley, including a comparison with the works of painter francis bacon. With stills and video clips RealPlayer.
http://ibiblio.org/stabley/lt1.html
Last Tango In Paris o many, Last Tango in Paris is one of the great explorations of cinema's visual possibilities. Director Bernardo Bertolucci, like his Italian compatriot Antonioni, a relationship between his role and that of a painter. In fact, Bertolucci went so far as to base Last Tango on the work of Francis Bacon, widely regarded as one of the greatest painters of the 20th century. While they were in Paris ready to begin shooting of the film, Bertolucci and Marlon Brando, the film's star, saw a show of Bacon's images. It made such an impression on them that it changed their entire conception of how the film would work. Bacon is best known for his tortured figures that evoke feelings of existential despair, and this is the dominant mood of Last Tango as well. Bertolucci connects the worlds of Bacon and Last Tango from the very outset of the film when the two images you see above by Bacon lead directly from the credit sequence into the opening shot of the film. Let's look at that transition. It's a masterful shot, and with its moving camera it helps us feel the mood of this film as a kind of dance, one of exquisite beauty but also of great despair.
Scroll your mouse over the three images of Paul (played by Brando) to reveal the images beneath them. They are from the bathroom where Paul's wife Rose had slit her wrists, and suggest that what is behind Paul's despondent condition is Rose's suicide. The woman shown in them is cleaning the blood out of the bathtub, and has been filmed through textured glass such that her face is distorted in a way that recalls Bacon's faces.

I was a regular at the Tate but not familiar with Bacon's work. I was usually in the Pre-Raphaelite room with headphones on listening to classical music. I'd heard about the Bacon exhibition and read about this controversial painter and his disturbing images. So after looking at a few paintings reproduced in various magazines and books I decided to go and have a look for myself. I really wasn't prepared for what I was about to see.

Sir Francis Bacon
Biography
Bacon was born on January 22 in London, at York House off the Strand. He was the youngest of two sons of Sir Nicholas Bacon. Bacon was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, but suffered ill health and studied there for only two years. His aversion towards Aristotelian philosophy began at Cambridge. In 1576 Bacon was admitted as a senior governor at one of the four Inns of Court, which served as institutions for legal education. The same year Bacon went to France as a part of the English ambassador's suite, but was recalled when his father died suddenly. He took up his residence at Gray's Inn (one of the Inns of Court) and became a barrister in 1582. He had a succesful career but it did not satisfy his political and philosophical ambitions. He embarked on a political career that was fairly successful. He suffered a setback though due to his objections to increased subsidies to meet the expenses of the war against Spain, an opinion that upset Queen Elizabeth. In 1591 Bacon became acquainted with the earl of Essex to whom he offered the friendly advice of an older, wiser, and more subtle man. Essex recommended Bacon for several high offices, but Bacon failed to be appointed each time. The failure of an expedition by Essex and his later attempted coup d'etat, cost the head of Bacon's protector, Essex, in 1604.

THE POEMS OF
SIR FRANCIS BACON
THE LIFE OF MAN
The world's a bubble; and the life of man less than a span.
In his conception wretched; from the womb so to the tomb:
Curst from the cradle, and brought up to years, with cares and fears.
Who then to frail mortality shall trust,
But limns the water, or but writes in dust.
Yet, since with sorrow here we live oppress'd, what life is best?
Courts are but only superficial schools to dandle fools:
The rural parts are turn'd into a den of savage men:
And where's a city from all vice so free,
But may be term'd the worst of all the three? Domestic cares afflict the husband's bed, or pains his head: Those that live single, take it for a curse, or do things worse: Some would have children; those that have them none; or wish them gone. What is it then to have no wife, but single thralldom or a double strife? Our own affections still at home to please, is a disease: To cross the sea to any foreign soil, perils and toil: Wars with their noise affright us: when they cease, W' are worse in peace: What then remains, but that we still should cry

59. The Oak Island Enigma, By Penn Leary
A 1953 article by Penn Leary that offers a detailed history of the island and expounds on a theory that Sir francis bacon was a party to the digging of the pit.
http://home.att.net/~mleary/oakislan.htm
The Oak Island Enigma
A History and Inquiry Into The Origin of The Money Pit.
Hand typeset, printed on a 6" x 9" press,
and published by the author.
Preface
T his is a story of treasure on a deserted island.
The historical account of Oak Island, Nova Scotia, given here is true; that is, as true as any history of events covering more than 150 years. It is a disappointing story, since it has no ending or real beginning.
Most tales of this sort are founded on an ancient map or legend which point to some part of the world as the hiding place of great riches. Usually the man who buried the treasure, and the date of its internment, are well known, but the exact location of the cache is obscure.
Yet the reverse is true of Oak Island. The particular spot where its treasure was buried has been fixed, within a few yards, since the late Eighteenth Century. No scrap of concrete evidence exists to connect it with any person or any age, and the character of the treasure is equally uncertain. We can only depend on a knowledge of human nature to be sure that it is something of enormous value.
No satisfactory explanation of the origin of the earthworks has ever been given. The Mahone Bay area, in which Oak is located, was well settled by the Acadians before 1700. We must necessarily select some date prior to that as the date of its burial, since the labor connected with the excavation could have been kept secret only when the Bay was uninhabited.
