The Critical Theory in the Frankfurt School underwent an impressive and substantial Odyssey from its origins in the early 1930s until it reached its climax in the 1960s, exhausting itself in the 1970s. This evolution can be interpreted in the light of the productive inner tensions between two tendencies: a positive optimistic utopianism and a negative utopian pessimism. It will be shown how this negative tendency joins forces with the traditional Jewish conception of redemption. Horkheimer discussed utopianism in his 1927 lectures at the University of Frankfurt. There he denounced the utopians as romantics who regard the past as a golden age, instead of acting in a concrete way towards shaping the future. He returned to this topic in 1930 in his essay "Origins of Bourgeois Philosophy of History." Clearly, the utopian tradition served merely as a subject of research. In no way did he consider himself as taking part in such a tradition. Utopia is examined together with the defamed ideology. While ideology affects reality, utopia enacts "a dream on a 'right' and 'just' form of life." Based on the critique of economic reality

The Arcades Project
Excerpt: The Arcades project went through many kinds of existence between 1927 and 1939. It never achieved a completed form. What remains are vast quantities of notes, images, quotes and citations; capable of being ordered and reordered in endlessly different constellations. This site is the beginning of an ongoing experiment in just such a reordering, its increasingly multiple links between material bringing elements into new juxtapositions and hopefully generating new meanings out of the debris of the era of high capitalism. (Mind you, this could also just be an exercise in giving these materials an aura, an air of nostalgic mystery which already hangs around their appearance in this present, if not that of the 1930s).

Reflections While a member of the "outer circle" of the Institute, Benjamin does the least amount of addition, or correction to Marxist theory. The added perceptive that he does provide is perhaps the most at odds with Marx , because of what Marx would call "unscientific" methods. In the collection of his works, Walter Benjamin demonstrates complete adherence to the notion of history moving through the necessary epochs set forth by Marx; to human material desire being the prime mover of mankind; to the notions of alienation ; and to the proletariat being the class with the ability to move mankind (through revolution) from the current epoch of capitalism , to the next epoch, communism . Benjamin challenges orthodox Marxism , with the notion that the individual participant in the bourgeoisie can come to a full awareness of his of his part in the current disintegration of man, by the structure of his method, and by questioning the deterministic element of Marxism. Benjamin’s method is a combination of an artful use of literary tools, empirical observation, and "transcendent" experience. technology to strip nature of "her" products prematurely. (76) Benjamin’s essays on the cities, particularly Moscow (98), and his essay One Way(75) present in-depth illustrations of alienation. Moscow alludes to alienation through Benjamin comparing it to Berlin. Moscow is full of almost communist life. Men, and women create and sell their own products, they interact with one another. Whereas Benjamin refers to Berlin in that aspect as an empty city, and a reflection of the bourgeoisie attempt to master nature. (98) Benjamin used the great cities in general as a metaphor for humankind’s alienation, from nature, and from one another. (75) He also used cities to depict the bourgeoisie mind, and its perpetuation of its own illusion. (146)

d. Sept. 26, 1940, near Port-Bou, Spain man of letters and aesthetician, now considered to have been the most important German literary critic in the first half of the 20th century. Born into a prosperous Jewish family, Benjamin studied philosophy in Berlin, Freiburg im Breisgau, Munich, and Bern. He settled in Berlin in 1920 and worked thereafter as a literary critic and translator. His halfhearted pursuit of an academic career was cut short when the University of Frankfurt rejected his brilliant but unconventional doctoral thesis, Ursprung des deutschen Trauerspiels (1928; The Origin of German Tragic Drama). Benjamin eventually settled in Paris after leaving Germany in 1933 upon the Nazis' rise to power. He continued to write essays and reviews for literary journals, but upon the fall of France to the Germans in 1940 he fled southward with the hope of escaping to the United States via Spain. Informed by the chief of police at the town of Port-Bou on the Franco-Spanish border that he would be turned over to the Gestapo, Benjamin committed suicide. The posthumous publication of Benjamin's prolific output won him a growing reputation in the later 20th century. The essays containing his philosophical reflections on literature are written in a dense and concentrated style that contains a strong poetic strain. He mixes social criticism and linguistic analysis with historical nostalgia while communicating an underlying sense of pathos and pessimism. The metaphysical quality of his early critical thought gave way to a Marxist inclination in the 1930s. Benjamin's pronounced intellectual independence and originality are evident in the extended essay

Our fine arts were developed, their types and uses were established, in times very different from the present, by men whose power of action upon things was insignificant in comparison with ours. But the amazing growth of our techniques, the adaptability and precision they have attained, the ideas and habits they are creating, make it a certainty that profound changes are impending in the ancient craft of the Beautiful. In all the arts there is a physical component which can no longer be considered or treated as it used to be, which cannot remain unaffected by our modern knowledge and power. A principal preoccupation of the theory and criticism of Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) is criticism itself. For Benjamin, in its broadest sense critique means that nothing can simply be taken as given. Any text or artifact always demands something more, exceeds itself, in a movement that structures not only literature and culture but also history itself.
As early as his dissertation, Der Begriff der Kunstkritik in der deutschen Romantik [The concept of aesthetic criticism in German Romanticism] (1920), Benjamin explored the notion of critique as ("fulfillment," "completion"), claiming with the Romantics (primarily Friedrich Schlegel) that critique was immanent to the movement of art itself and thus less something contingent to art than its necessary supplement. There would be no art without critique, not because critique has priority over art but because the artifact is itself unfinished, already critical from the start. In an essay on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe 's Elective Affinities (1922) that Hugo von Hofmannsthal called "epoch-making," Benjamin insisted on the difference between critique and commentary, the former concerned with "truth content," the latter with "subject matter." Against the tradition of monumentalizing biography that dominated Goethe criticism, Benjamin saw the work's history as a "funeral pyre," at which the commentator could study the wood and ashes, while the critic "is concerned only with the enigma of the flame itself, . . . the truth whose living flame goes on burning over the heavy logs of the past and the light ashes of life gone by" (quoted in

Benjamin was influenced by his close friendship with the historian of Jewish mysticism Gershom Gerhard Scholem . In 1933, he moved to France because of the rise of the Nazis. When the Nazis invaded France, he fled to Spain, was denied entry, and committed suicide.
