Indice ...

Volume 22, Number 2 Excerpt from
Walter Benjamin's Angel of History, or the Transfiguration of the Revolutionary into the Historian
by O. K. Werckmeister The more than forty years of commentary on Benjamin's ninth thesis [of his "Theses on the Philosophy of History"] largely constitutes a continuous ideological debate about the political validation of intellectual culture among nonpoliticians. A dozen lines of printed text, conveniently focused on one picture suitable for incessant reproduction, have become a venue for drawing out a string of fundamental contradictions between revolution and religion, activism and resignation, political partisanship and historical detachment. Thus Paul Klee's watercolor Angelus Novus of 1920 has become, on Benjamin's rather than Klee's terms, a composite literary icon for left-wing intellectuals with uncertain political aspirations. Benjamin's interpretation of a "modern" artwork as a mirror of autobiographical self-assurance and as a fantasy of political dissent has been turned into a foundational text for a theoretically abbreviated and metaphorically stylized alternative historical idea bent on reflecting on its own inconclusiveness. As an icon of the left, Angelus Novus has seemed to hold out an elusive formula for making sense of the senseless, for reversing the irreversible, while being subject to a kind of political brooding all the more protracted the less promising the prospects for political practice appear to be. Thus Benjamin's suggestive visual allegory has become a meditative imagean

    PERSPECTIVES ON WALTER BENJAMIN
    Winter 1999
Volume 25, Number 2 Excerpt from
From Walter Benjamin to Carl Schmitt, via Thomas Hobbes
    by Horst Bredekamp
(Translated by Melissa Thorson Hause and Jackson Bond) 1.Traces of Benjamin's Esteem for Schmitt
Walter Benjamin's esteem for Carl Schmitt is one of the most irritating incidents in the intellectual history of the Weimar Republic. It arouses astonishment to this day, connecting as it does Benjamin, a victim of Nazism, to Schmitt, who, with his distinction between friend and enemy, developed a Manichean definition of the political and took a public stance in support of National Socialism in the years after the Machtergreifung Yet this bizarre relationship, which for decades was repressed as inconceivable or dismissed as a mere chance episode, was no isolated incident. Although he was forbidden to teach after 1945 and his reputation remained tainted, Schmitt served as a kind of oracle for countless intellectuals and politicians in Germany and elsewhere before his death in 1985. Finally, he continues to be the subject of increasing interest, even and especially in the United States.

For although the child, in his solitary games, grows up at closest quarters to the city, he needs and seeks guides to its wider expanses, and the first of these for a son of wealthy middle-class parents like me are sure to have been nursemaids. With them I went to the Zoo although I recall it only from much later, with glaring military bands and "Scandal Avenue" (as the adherents of art nouveau

    Name:
Walter Benjamin Dates: Born: July 15, 1892 in Berlin Died: September 27, 1940 in Port Bou, Spain (suicide) Ph.D.: 1919 Biography: Born to a wealth Jewish family, Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) became one of the most influential Marxist literary and cultural critics of the 20th century. His writings played a key role in the development of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory. Waltern Benjamin is perhaps best known for his essay "Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit" (The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction), published in 1934, in which he explored the consequences of how technological reproductions of artworks could cause them to lose their uniqueness. Knowing that his fate at the hands of the Nazis would not be pleasant, Benjamin sought to emigrate to the United States. He hoped to flee through France and Spain, but while waiting for a visa he realized that he would soon be handed over to the Gestapo, so he took an overdose or morphium and died.
