GNOSIS AND EXISTENTIAL PHILOSOPHY

Nikolai Berdyaev is undoubtedly the foremost of those Russian thinkers who have been able to obtain a hearing for themselves not only in their native country but in Europe as well. His works have been translated into numerous languages and have everywhere encountered the greatest sympathy and even enthusiasm. It will be no exaggeration if we set his name alongside those of the presently best known and most significant philosophers, such as Karl Jaspers, Max Scheler, Nicolai Hartmann, and Martin Heidegger. Vladimir Solovyov has also been translated into many languages (in German a comprehensive edition of his works has appeared), but he is much less known than Berdyaev and has never attracted the interest of philosophical circles. It may be said that in the person of Berdyaev Russian philosophical thinking appeared for the first time before the forum of Europe or, perhaps, even of the whole world.
In our Russian emigrant literature, however, Berdyaev is virtually unmentioned. In the fifteen years of his sojourn abroad he has published a whole series of outstanding philosophical works:

de profundis. This philosophy does not ask, it does not inquire, but appeals, by enriching thinking with a dimension that is completely alien and incomprehensible to speculative philosophy. It awaits an answer not from our reason, not from insight - but from God. From God, for Whom nothing is impossible, Who holds all truths in His hands, Who rules over the present as well as over the past and the future.
"Kierkegaard's friend" (Kierkegaard almost always speaks through a mediator) flees from Hegel to the private thinker Job, in whose brief remarks he finds more than in the systems of German idealism, than in the "Greek symposium." Perhaps we find in his reflections on the Book of Job the most irritating and challenging and, at the same time, the most attractive and fascinating of everything that Kierkegaard wrote. When his friend, after he has turned away from Hegel, goes to Job, he goes to him not for moral consolations, not for a theodicy. He has already tested and rejected all moral consolations. And theodicy, that is, the justification of God before reason, appears to Kierkegaard as the most unsuccessful, most unfortunate, most fateful idea of all that human wisdom has ever conceived. He seeks "repetition," that is, the same thing that Job aimed for and that, in Kierkegaard's opinion, will in the future philosophy take the place of the Greek recollection ( anamnesis
He knows that Regina Olsen, seen with the eyes "of all," is a very ordinary creature. Yes, seen with the eyes of all! But how many flaming pages has Berdyaev written against "all" and "omnitude," how enraged he has been, following Nietzsche, over the pretension of the "many, all too many" to trample and to annihilate individual evaluations! But now, when an opportunity presents itself really to take the side of the "individual person," Berdyaev goes over the side of his hereditary enemy in the most decisive fashion. Kierkegaard would not have written his brilliant books. This, of course, is correct: both wisdom and ordinary common sense speak for this. Pushkin expressed it in his well known verses: "If banishment, incarceration befall a poet - so much the better, say lovers of art. So much the better: he draws and transmits to us new thoughts and feelings." But Gogol, indeed, burned the second volume of his

    Nikolai Berdyaev Velikii Inkvizitor
I Pervye slova, s kotorymi Velikii Inkvizitor obratilsya k Hristu, zaklyuchennomu im v tyur'mu, byli: "Da Ty i prava ne imeesh' nichego pribavlyat' k tomu, chto uzhe skazano Toboi prezhde. Zachem zhe Ty prishel nam meshat'? Ibo Ty prishel nam meshat' i Sam eto znaesh'". V chem glavnye cherty Velikogo Inkvizitora v ponimanii Dostoevskogo? Otverzhenie svobody vo imya schast'ya lyudei, Boga vo imya chelovechestva. Etim soblaznyaet Velikii Inkvizitor lyudei, prinuzhdaet ih otkazat'sya ot svobody, otvrashaet ih ot vechnosti. A Hristos bolee vsego dorozhil svobodoi, svobodnoi lyubov'yu cheloveka. Hristos ne tol'ko lyubil lyudei, no i uvazhal ih, utverzhdal dostoinstvo cheloveka, priznaval za nim sposobnost' dostignut' vechnosti, hotel dlya lyudei ne prosto schast'ya, a schast'ya dostoinogo, soglasnogo s vysshei prirodoi chelovechestva, s absolyutnym prizvaniem lyudei. Vse eto nenavistno duhu Velikogo Inkvizitora, prezirayushego cheloveka, otricayushego ego vysshuyu prirodu, ego sposobnost' idti k vechnosti i slivat'sya s absolyutnym, zhazhdushego lishit' lyudei svobody, prinudit' ih k zhalkomu unizitel'nomu schast'yu, ustroiv ih v udobnom zdanii. Velikii Inkvizitor govorit eshe: "Vmesto togo, chtoby ovladet' svobodoi lyudei, Ty uvelichil im ee eshe bol'she! Ili Ty zabyl, chto spokoistvie ili dazhe smert' cheloveku dorozhe svobodnogo vybora v poznanii dobra i zla? Net nichego obol'stitel'nee dlya cheloveka, kak svoboda ego sovesti, no net nichego i muchitel'nee. I vot vmesto tverdyh osnov dlya uspokoeniya sovesti chelovecheskoi raz navsegda - Ty vzyal vse, chto est' neobychainogo, gadatel'nogo i neopredelennogo, vzyal vse, chto bylo ne po silam lyudei, a potomu postupil kak by i ne lyubya ih vovse,- i eto kto zhe: Tot, kotoryi prishel otdat' za nih zhizn' Svoyu! Vmesto togo, chtoby ovladet' lyudskoi svobodoi, Ty umnozhil ee i obremenil ee mucheniyami dushevnoe carstvo cheloveka, voveki. The Funeral of Nikolai Berdjajew
on 26th of March 1948 by Klaus Bambauer
As we know from our reading of the D Lowrie biography ("The Rebellious Prophet", pp. 278), N. Berdjajew was buried in the little peaceful cemetery of
Clamart near Paris. Different priests, all of them friends of N. Berdjajew, attended or headed the Divine-service for the deceased philosopher. Among them as noted by Lowrie were: Father Nicolas Eremin, Father Sergej Schewitsch and Father Stefan Swetozarew. Father Evgraf Kowalewskij delivered the eulogy, "The Search for the Truth". In the course of my investigations I have discovered some details to the Orthodox priests, that are named above: 1. Father Nicolas Eremin became later Metropolitan and Exarch of the Moscow Patriarchate for Western-Europe, then he lived in retirement in Paris. But first, and I conjecture here, he was priest at the church of the Three Hierarchs. Berdjajew belonged to this church in Paris. 2. Father Sergej Schewitsch was together with other priests and laymen a founder of the St. Photius-brotherhood. After the decease of Metropolit Evlogij a delegation, headed by Metropolitan Serafim, went to Russia. Among the delegation members was also the monk Father Sergej Schewitsch. And N. A. Poltoratskij was also a member, who was later in Odessa and then in the United States of America a professor for Russian church-history, well known to all specialists on this subject both there and in Europe.

By Milena Faustova Nikolai Berdyaev was one of the most prominent figures of the "Russian cultural Renaissance" of the early 20th century and later a leading philosopher of the Russian emigration. "Professional philosophers appeared in Russia in the 19th century. But it was thanks to Berdyaev that Russia had contributed new ideas to world philosophy. On the whole the beginning of the 20th century introduced qualitative changes into world philosophy. The period when whole systems offered a detailed analysis of every aspect of being was over. The new epoch put mankind to the test. It had in store the growth of violence and social aggression, the increasing dissonance between people and the environment, the fear of overpopulation, and mass neurasthenia with an epidemic of suicides. Philosophy was expected to produce new methods of cognition. Such methods were offered by existentialism, a teaching that was concerned with intuition and an understanding of universal being through individual being. Berdyaev's was an existentialistic attitude. He comprehended the tragic reality of the world through the drama of his own life. He appeared in Russia in "the time of troubles". And this was no accident.

Philosophy Due to his Christian perspective, Fedorov found the widespread lack of love among people appalling. He divided these non-loving relations into two kinds. One is alienation among people: "non-kindred relations of people among themselves." The other is isolation of the living from the dead: "nature's non-kindred relation to men." "[O]ne should live not for oneself nor for others but with all and for all" ( Filosofiya Obshchago Dela vol. I, 118, n. 5, as quoted in Zakydalsky, 55). Fedorov is referring to all people of all time (past, present, future). He is speaking of a project to unite humankind, the colonization ("spiritualization") of the universe, the quest for the Kingdom of God, the creation of cosmos from chaos, the death of death, even resurrection of the dead . Fedorov believed, and passionately felt, that resignation in the face of death and separation of knowledge from action was false Christianity. He cautioned against being fooled into worshipping the blind forces of Satan. Rather, one should actively participate in changing what is into what ought to be. What Was Man Created For?

    Nikolai Berdyaev (1874-1948)
Berdyaev was born of an aristocratic family near Kiev in the Ukraine. He was educated first at a military academy and then at the University of Kiev. Like many other students of his time he became involved with Marxism in reaction to the social and political structures of Imperial Russia. In 1898 he was expelled from the university and imprisoned for two years. He was then exiled for three years to Volgoda in northern Russia for his Marxist activities. He moved to St Petersburg in 1904. Although Berdyaev initially supported the Russian Revolution, he eventually became critical of Marxism. Because of his socialist tendencies he gained enough official favour after the 1917 revolution to become, for a brief time, Professor of Philosophy at Moscow State University. It soon became clear, however, that he was not and would not become an orthodox Marxist. His criticism of the Bolsheviks resulted in his dismissal and deportation from Russia in 1922. With the help of fellow exiles and the Young Men's Christian Association he founded the Academy of Philosophy and Religion in Berlin. He moved the Academy to Paris in 1924 where he founded and edited the influential journal
