In Job's Balances This book (1929) constitutes a collection of Shestov's essays on Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Blaise Pascal, Descartes, Plotinus and Spinoza written in the 1920's. Shestov's sharp gift for philosophical criticism finds here its best examples. Potestas Clavium Published in 1923, this work is partly written in aphoristic form and represents Shestov's first attempt at a "critique of organized metaphysics" which he pursued relentlessly ever since. It also contains an essay on Edmund Husserl. The English translation was made from the French edition rather than the original Russian. Speculation and Revelation This book is a posthumous collection of Shestov's essays written at different times and published in émigré journals. Shestov's daughters made the selection and issued the book in 1964 in Paris. Some essays deal with Shestov's celebrated contemporaries such as Martin Buber, Edmund Husserl, Nikolai Berdyaev, Lucien Lévi-Bruhl. Others are devoted to Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and others. The book's longest essay, "Speculation and Apocalypse", treats of Vladimir Solovyov's philosophy.

He perceives history as an inevitable, divinely-led process that is nonetheless based on the joint work of God and man. Solovyov also sees the historical process as an interaction between society and personality. Society is for him an "extension of personality," while personality is a "condensation of society." Society itself is a "living organism" of a unique kind because the elements of which it is composed are human individuals, i.e., personalities. Each person has an inviolable moral dignity or moral value. God, man and society (together with the cosmos) form the so-called total-unity. While all men are equal with regard to their dignity, they do not all have an equal role to play in the historical process. The pioneers of development are a few outstanding personalities, the so-called "men of providence" who show the broad masses the way.

Nikolai Berdjajev Nikolai Berdjajev (1874-1975) oli venäläissyntyinen filosofi, jonka ajattelua on kutsuttu personalismiksi tai kristilliseksi eksistentialismiksi. Nuoruudessaan B. kiinnostui marxilaisuudessa ja toimi yhteistyössä venäläisten sosialistien kanssa. Marxilaisuuden materialistinen ihmiskuva ei kuitenkaan voinut tyydyttää häntä, koska jokainen ihminen oli hänen mukaansa perimmältään ihme, vapaa ja "ääretön" persoona. B. oli vallan ja erityisesti väkivallan kriitikko. Jumalallakaan ei hänen mukaansa ollut valtaa "edes sen vertaa kuin tavallisella kyläpoliisilla". Jumala oli vain absoluuttisen vapaa. B. karkotettiin Neuvostoliitosta v. 1922, minkä jälkeen hän asui ensin Berliinissä ja sittemmin Ranskassa. B:n teoksia ei olla vielä suomennettu.
