Following in the footsteps of V. Klyuchevsky, Nikolai Berdyaev wrote that "the landscape of the Russian soul" corresponds to the landscape of Russia itself. In this, he emphasizes the boundlessness and formlessness of the Russian national consciousness, its striving for infinity, its breadth and sweep. The powerful element of nature which resides in the Russian soul is, according to Berdyaev, associated with the immensity of the Russian land, with the boundlessness of the Russian plain, with a necessity and at the same time the practical difficulty of "giving form" to this land. From those components of the Russian national mind-set associated with nature, Berdyaev was able to infer the metaphysical qualities of Russian history and culture, raising the individual connections and interrelationships between the natural, social, cultural and historical phenomena of Russia to the level of a whole philosophy of history (the “Russian Idea”). Thus, developing the ideas of S. Solovyov and V. Klyuchevsky, Nikolai Berdyaev asserts that the despotic character of the Russian state is to be explained by the peculiarity of the Russian mind-set by the need to "give form" to the huge, immense Russian plain and to do so by the use of violence, that is, by having such violence applied "from above", by the powers that be. In effect, Berdyaev was speaking of the fundamental mind-set of Russian civilization.

Nicholas Berdyaev, the Russian Idea, and Liberty Stephen P. Hoffmann, Taylor University “My whole feeling for life is born of an intense love of freedom,” writes Nicholas Berdyaev near the beginning of his autobiography. Berdyaev is one of the pre-revolutionary thinkers whose works Soviet ideologists suppressed for decades. As restrictions ended in the twilight of Communism, Russians rediscovered Berdyaev and others as they sought to fill the vacuum left by the bankrupt official ideology of Marxism-Leninism. The freedom to which Berdyaev was devoted was not liberal individualism. He defined it as “personalism,” a respect for the individual in the context of community. He understood community in terms of what he called “the Russian idea.” For him this was a national mission characterized by devotion to a common good rooted in Christianity. Berdyaev was a self-proclaimed anarchist who regarded political power and institutions of any kind as damaging to both freedom and community. Despite his disdain for politics, Berdyaev’s understanding of liberty and community is an important basis for a Christian philosophy of citizenship and public life. His critique of power is a reminder of the need to protect the integrity of persons from being devalued by the claims of collectivities.

Mikhail Epstein. AN OVERVIEW OF RUSSIAN PHILOSOPHY
"The Karamazovs are not scoundrels but philosophers, because all real Russian people are philosophers..." Dmitry Karamazov, in Fyodor Dostoevsky. The Brothers Karamazov It is a property of the Russian people to indulge in philosophy. ...The fate of the philosopher in Russia is painful and tragic. Nikolai Berdyaev. The Russian Idea Introduction What is philosophy? There is no simple and universal definition and many thinkers consider the task of such a definition to be impossible. The most credible attempt is a nominalistic reference: philosophy is what Plato and Aristotle, Kant and Hegel were occupied with. Perhaps, the single most famous and broadly citedif slightly eccentricdefinition belongs to A. N. Whitehead: philosophy is a series of footnotes to Plato. If this is true, then Russian philosophy must be viewed as an indispensable part of the Western intellectual tradition since it provides perhaps the most elaborated footnotes to the most mature and comprehensive dialogues of Plato: The Republic and The Laws . Questions of social ethics and political philosophy, of an individual's relationship to a State, of adequate knowledge and virtuous behavior, of wisdom and power, of religious and aesthetic values, of ideas and ideals as guidelines for human life all of these are central to Russian philosophy and exemplify its continuing relevance vis-a-vis Plato's legacy and the Western tradition in its broadest sense. Moreover, the very status of ideas in Russian philosophy mirrors Plato's vision of them as ontological entities, "laws", or ideal principlesas opposed to mere epistemological units. In discussing Russian philosophy, especially that of its Soviet period, we are bound to consider the practical fate of such Platonic conceptions as we explore the final outcome of an ideocratic utopia, wherein philosophy was designated to rule the republic.
