Translation of a 1901 essay by Martin Buber on this thinker.

    CONCERNING JACOB BOEHME
    Martin Buber
Originally: Martin Buber, Weiner Rundschau V, 12(June 15, 1901), pp. 251-253. . References in parentheses are as follows:
    • Clavis = Boehme, Clavis, or Key
    • Gnad. = Boehme, Von der Gnadenwahl
    • Indiv. = Zur Geschichte des Individuationsproblem (Nicolaus von Cusa und Jacob Boehme) . Buber's Doctoral Dissertation for University of Vienna, 1904. Currently in the Martin Buber Archives, Tel Aviv, Israel.
    • MM. = Boehme, Mysterium Magnum
    • SR. = Boehme, Signature Rerum, or The Signature of All Things
Boehme's basic concern, that which is the summation of his thought, is the problem of the relation of the individual to the world. The world remains a riddle, influencing and being influenced, and yet always distant and strange. The individual consumes himself in silence, hopeless in its silence. "We find that life is a burning fire which consumes, and when it can no longer consume, it goes out." God and nature are one for Boehme, as the soul and body or even more, as energy and organism. He states, "You also see how the powers of God cannot be distinguished from nature, but it is actually all one body. We recognize that God in his own being is no Being, but is merely the power or the understanding toward Being, as a groundless [ungrundlicher] eternal will." [Indiv., p. 34, MM 5:1]

    Jacob Boehme Quotations
Quoted by Robert Bly in The Light Around the Body "For according to the outward man, we are in this world, and according to the inward man, we are in the inward world.... Since then we are generated out of both worlds, we speak in two languages, and we must be understood also by two languages." (Bly 1). "When we think of it with this knowledge, we see that we have been locked up, and led blindfold, and it is the wise of this world who have shut and locked us up in their art and their rationality, so that we have had to see with their eyes." (Bly 11). "O dear children, look in what a dungeon we are lying, in what lodging we are, for we have been captured by the spirit of the outward world; it is our life, for it nourishes and brings us up, it rules in our marrow and bones, in our flesh and blood, it has made our flesh earthly, and now death has us." (Bly 39). "But when this had given me many a hard blow, doubtless from the Spirit that had a desire for me, I finally fell into great sadness and melancholy, when I viewed the great depth of this world, the sun and the stars and the clouds, rain and snow, and contemplated in my mind the whole creation of this world." "So then I found in all things good and evil, love and wrath, in creatures of reason as well as in wood, in stone, in earth, in the elements, in men and animals. Withal, I considered the little spark "man" and what it might be esteemed to be by God in comparison with this great work of heaven and earth."

    About
Jacob Boehme The following information about Jacob Boehme has been drawn from a wonderful essay by Edward A. Beach. You can find it off-site at http://www.evansville.edu/~nb6/boehme.html Boehme was a German, Protestant mystic who lived from 1575 to 1624. A cobbler by trade, he experienced a spiritual awakening at age 25 when he saw sunlight reflecting off the water in a pewter dish. This produced an ecstatic vision by which Boehme perceived God as the unmanifest unity which reflects Itself in Its creation. According to Boehme, prior to creation God was without knowledge of Himself for He had no beginning and knew nothing like Himself. Because He desired to experience self-consciousness and self-knowledge, He brought forth the universe from Himself. Thus Boehme viewed the act of creation as an act of self-revelation, and the universe of multiplicity as the mirror of God. He further goes on to state that the suffering experienced by sentient beings is a necessary component of self-revelation. It is through suffering and opposition that created beings evolve to consciousness and eventually to full spiritual realization. When God's consciousness is reflected in one of His creature's fully awakened consciousness, there is an experience of unspeakable, ecstatic love. Lutheran church authorities did not take kindly to Boehme's writings, and he was persecuted and threatened with imprisonment.

Also spelled Boehm, Böhme, Böhm or Behmen. German Protestant mystic and philosophical theologian. Nietzsche , Hegel, Schelling, Emmanuel Swedenborg, William Blake , and George Fox, founder of the Quakers. Boehme's teachings were also influential in the development of high grade Freemasonry. In Boehme's cosmology, the first person of the Trinity, God the Father, is identified with primal, unmanifested reality, Der Ungrund, "the Abyss," nothingness which contains the potentiality of everything. The Abyss is characterized by a desire to reveal Himself, which He does through a process of divine introspection, or reflection. The second person of Boehme's trinity, the Son, is identified with the desire of the Abyss to reveal Himself; and the third person, the Holy Spirit, is identified with the process of divine reflection. This process of reflection involves the making of a divine mirror, as it were, which Boehme calls "Virgin Wisdom" or Sophia. This Virgin Wisdom can be viewed as a fourth person of the Godhead. The images seen by God of His own potentialities in the mirror of Virgin Wisdom led to God's desire to manifest the potentialities in reality to engage in the process of Creation. Boehme stressed the value of individual religious experience in his teachings. "As the many kinds of flowers grow in the earth near each other, and none contends with the other about color, smell, or taste, but they let the earth and the sun, rain and wind, heat and cold, do what they will with them, while they grow each according to its own nature, so it is with the children of God."
