In the midst of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), as an expression of the then prevalent millenarian sentiment, a movement springs up which can be classified as 'mystical spiritualism'. The most important representative of this movement is the Silesian mystic Jacob Boehme (1575-1624).
Fascinated by the problem of evil, Boehme experienced a spiritual breakthrough in 1600, the record of which was laid down in writing twelve years later: Morgenröte im Aufang. It marks the beginning of a voluminous philosophical work, in which Boehme makes use of ideas and terms derived from the Bible, medieval mysticism, cabala, Valentin Weigel (1533-88) and Paracelsus (1493-1541), whose collected works had been published in the years 1589-1591.
Boehme's mystical pantheism and dialectical conception of God - in which good and evil (and all antitheses for that matter) are rooted in one and the same being - soon bring him into conflict with Lutheran orthodoxy. The manuscript of Morgenröte im Aufgang is confiscated by the authorities on 26 July 1613, and the author is banned from publishing anything further. His manuscripts, however, continue to circulate in copies made by friends, amongst whom Heinrich Prunius, Hans Rothe, Boehme's patrons Karl and Michael Ender von Sercha, and Johann Sigismund von Sweinichen. The latter's effort caused a short text by Boehme to appear during his lifetime - although without the author's knowledge - under the title

Back to home page A source within Hermetic Christianity
It is by no means a coincidence that in 1989 twenty-five years of activity in assembling a library containing thousands of documents centered on Hermetic Christianity are crowned. It is a radiant crown with many shining documents with rich spiritual contents of which the nobility and great age of the first printed writings, published from the year 1455 onwards, have put a lasting stamp on the spiritual history of our western culture. The title of this catalogue declares the hidden connection between three major spiritual sources of power brought together here: the Christ, Plato and Hermes Trismegistus. An exhibition of incunabula in the arrangement chosen has enabled us to grasp the roots of a tradition which is active in our library, that of Hermetic Christianity.
One of the principles upon which the library operates is the notion 'ad fontes': to the source, or, to put it more accurately perhaps: back to the source. In the fifteenth century we retrieve this source in an almost perfect and uncorrupted form in the basic writings of the prominent spiritual thinkers of mankind. The valuable manuscripts and the spiritual testimonies they contain, cherished for centuries in private and monastic libraries and treated with the utmost care, came into the possession of a group of people who, at that time, brought about a renaissance, a rebirth of wisdom, thus creating a new era.

It is very gratifying to see Sparrow's translation of Boehme's "Morgenrote am Aufgang" in print again. Jacob Boehme, the shoemaker from Gorlitz whose life was forever altered by a visionary experience, captured the imagination of Emerson and other Transcendentalist writers. Boehme saw nature as a reflection/representation of God's plan, a concept which American thinkers found congenial to their intrinsically optimistic world-view. "Aurora" was most likely first introduced into the U.S. by German Pietists. The original is enormously difficult to translate (or even to comprehend) in German. Thus, the 19th century reader was probably just as thrilled to find a translation as we are lucky to have a reprint of the Sparrow edition. November, 1991

Jacob Boehme Imagine an untrained thinker who nevertheless had a major influence on a host of notable philosophers and religious leaders. Jacob Boehme was such a man. A shoemaker without college or university credentials, he wrote twenty-nine books and tracts which set a lot of minds turning over. Among them were thinkers, Pietists and mystics not only of his own age, but down to our own day. Henri Bergson's metaphysics, George Fox's Quakerism, Hegel's dialectical theory, and Heidegger's existentialism each owe something to Boehme. Even mad Nietzsche and gloomy Schopenhauer borrowed ideas from him. So did the liberal theologian Paul Tillich.

Behmenists Summary Behmenism was a Continental religious sect based on the teaching and writings of , a German Lutheran religious philosopher and Pietist mystic. He has been called the "Teutonic Theosopher". Boehme wrote his first treatise Die Morgenroete in Aufgang oder Aurora In 1618 he started writing devotional treatises. The majority of his works were written from 1619-1624. His second major work was Weg zu Christo
English Behmenists
English Behmenists developed independently of their Continental brethren. Some of the English Behmenists eventually merged with the early Quakers, who incorporated Boehme's teachings into their own doctrines. Boehme through his writings would lead men to a fuller religious experience and awakening to God. English translations of Boehmes' writings were very popular in England. Manuscripts seem to have been available in the late 1640's. A biography of Boehme was produced about 1645 by Richard Whittaker . Boehme's works were being translated after 1645 into English by the following translators: John Sparrow Humphrey Blunden ; and

Esoteric Masters Jacob Boehme by Waterfield, Robin $14.95, 240 pp., ISBN: 1556433573 North Atlantic Books , 3/1/2001 , Paperback Long Description
Highly regarded among Christian mystics, Jacob Boehme (1575-1624) was famous for his inspired and provocative analysis of the nature and being of God. Grounded in Paracelsus, the Kabbala, astrology, alchemy, and the Hermetic tradition, Boehme articulated a revelatory theology which emphasized the process whereby God comes to know Himself. Boehme reasoned that from His illimitable oneness, God was unable to truly apprehend Himself as God in all His splendor. Thus, God had to become an incarnated, limited being, for only through experience could He satisfy His need for self-understanding. This anthology serves as an introduction to Boehme’s thought. Part One gives biography and context of Boehme’s writings and their influence on later scientists, alchemical researchers, and poets. Part Two contains selections from Boehme’s works grappling with his main themes, including the birth of God and the vindication of His goodness. Robin Waterfield, editor Reviews

    Boehme
Glenn Everett , Associate Professor of English, University of Tennessee at Martin
acob Boehme (1575-1624) was a German peasant shoemaker who became a mystic. He believed that God and Nature exist in opposition, and that the conditions of human existence are a consequence of various conflicts between opposing principles light and darkness, good and evil, love and hate, and so forth and that, seen from this perspective, the universe is the revelation of God. Boehme's doctrines were translated into English in a number of editions between 1645 and 1662, and strongly influenced the thought not only of men like William Law (the English theologian and mystic whose "Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life" sowed, according to John Wesley, the seeds of Methodism , and was the first work, Dr. Johnson said, which drew his attention to religion). Boehme also had major influence upon William Blake.

He was not a scholar nor a lettered man, but simply a craftsman shoemaker. His illuminations on the being of God, the fall and the redemption of man, the law of opposites, and the hidden principals in creation., are rivaled by none, even to this day. His writings are often difficult to follow, partly due to his lack of formal education, and also to his use of alchemical terminology, which was the scientific chemistry of his medieval times. His writings are nevertheless compelling, filled with illumination, and charged with passionate spirituality. Jacob Boehme was highly influential on subsequent thinkers, including William Law, Dionysius Freher, Nicolas Berdyrev, Soloviev, Hegel, Schelling, William Blake, Isaac Newton, Franz von Baader, and George Fox, the founder of the Quakers.
