Bolzano did not, of course, expressly discuss or support any independent demarcation of pure logic in our sense, but he provided one de facto in the first two volumes of his work, in his discussions of what underlay a Wissenschaftslhere or theory of science in the sense of his conception; he did so with such purity and scientific strictness, and with such a rich store of original, scientifically confirmed and fruitful thoughts, that we must count him as one of the greatest logicians of all time. He must be placed historically in fairly close proximity to Leibniz, with whom he shares important thoughts and fundamental conceptions, and to whom he is also philosophically akin in other respects." Zkoumáním pravidel myšlení se stal pøedchùdcem moderní logiky. Dílo Paradoxy nekoneèna obsahuje základní teorie množin, zejm. úvahy o ekvivalentních množinách. Pøispìl k základùm matematické analýzy, upøesnil dùležité pojmy z teorie funkcí a reálných èísel; ovlivnil G. Cantora. V ontologii inspirován G. W. Bernard Bolzano Bernard Bolzano se narodil 5.øíjna 1781 v Praze, Platnéøské ulici. Absolvoval pìtileté piaristické gymnásium a tøíletý filozofický pøípravný kurz na vysokou školu. Byl velmi talentovaný, vynikal pøedevším v matematice. Neobyèejnì pilného studenta po vystudování fylozofie zajímala také astronomie, chemie a fyzika. Právì tak, jeko nadáním byl Bolzano obdaøen velkou odpovìdností. Aèkoliv mìl rád pøedevèím matematiku, která ho pøitahovala pøísnou logikou, cítil povinnost konat maximum pro lidi. Po vystudování teologie uspìl ve dvou konkurzech. Za prvé v matematice, kde mìl vydanou práci týkající se elementární geometrie a za druhé na novì zøízené stolici náboženské nauky pøi fylozofické fakultì. Pøijal knìžské svìcení, promoval na doktora filozofie. Tím skonèilo jeho období studií. Snad proto, že v Bolzanovi krvi kolovala krev po otci italská a po matce nìmecká, cítil se být více obèanem, než vlastencem. Nacionalismus, a èeský nebo nìm církev. Proti žalobì císecký ho odpuzoval. Byl to svobodnì myslící muž, váhající mezi uèením církve a mezi poznatky, ke kterým došel svým studiem. Za svùj úkol považoval šíøit osvìtu a mravnost ve veškerém lidském konání. Jako profesor náboženství pøi filozofické fakultì mìl také povinnost vést náboženské promluvy o nedìlích a svátcích k veøejnosti z kazatelny chrámu sv. Salvatora.

10.4. Bolzano, Bernhard (1781-1848) IRA Bernard Bolzano was a philosopher and mathematician whose contributions were not fully recognized until long after his death. He is especially important in the fields of logic, geometry and the theory of real numbers. Bernardus Placidus Johann Nepomuk Bolzano was born in Prague, Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic), on October 5, 1781. His father was an art dealer and both parents were very pious Christians. Coming from such a religious household, Bernard grew up with a high moral code and a belief in holding to his principles. It was this background that attracted him to the Church and the priestly life. Bolzano entered the University of Prague in 1796, where he studied philosophy, mathematics and physics. After graduation, he joined the theology department at the university and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1804. Despite his dedication to the Church, he did not give up his mathematical interests and was at one time recommended for the chair of the mathematics department. The year 1805 started a struggle that would dominate the rest of his life. In a political move, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire set up a chair in the philosophy of religion at each university. The empire was comprised of many different ethic groups that were prone to nationalistic movements for independence. Spurred by the "free thinking" of the recent French Revolution, these movements were becoming a serious problem to holding the empire together. The creation of the chair was part of a greater plan to support the Catholic Church. The authorities considered the Church to be conservative and hoped it would control the liberal thinking of the time. Bolzano was appointed to the position at the University of Prague. As far as the authorities were concerned, this was a bad idea. Bolzano, though a priest, was a "free thinker" himself and was not afraid to express his beliefs in Czech nationalism.

Bolzano entered the Philosophy Faculty of the University of Prague in 1796, studying philosophy and mathematics. Bolzano wrote My special pleasure in mathematics rested therefore particularly on its purely speculative parts, in other words I prized only that part of mathematics which was at the same time philosophy. In the autumn of 1800 he began 3 years of theological study. While pursuing his theological studies he prepared a doctoral thesis on geometry. He received his doctorate in 1804 writing a thesis giving his view of mathematics, and what constitutes a correct mathematical proof. In the preface he wrote:- I could not be satisfied with a completely strict proof if it were not derived from concepts which the thesis to be proved contained, but rather made use of some fortuitous, alien, intermediate concept, which is always an erroneous transition to another kind.

Teaching Philosophy Bernard Bolzano-Pedagogue Czech Republic ABSTRACT: Bernard Bolzano (1781-1848), the famous logician and mathematician, worked from 1805-1819 as a religious professor at the Prague University. His studies focused on three main themes: (1) ethical education, including a rather liberal sexual education as well as the problems of the coexistence of Czechs and Germans in one country (with foresight into some of these matters before the rise of extreme nationalism); (2) social problems, where he formulated for the first time his social-utopian vision of human society based on the fundamental equality of people, ideas later gathered in his book, Von dem besten Staate ; and (3) philosophy and religion, of which his lectures concentrate on the social function(s) of the Church and the social mission of the priesthood. Because of his opinions, he was disqualified from his professorship, resulting in a Church investigation against him. He was unable to return to the university, denied the right to publish in Austria, and relegated to live out his life as a private research worker. Bolzano's fate is similar to that of another pedagogue from Bohemia-Jan Patocka. Bernard Bolzano (1781-1848), presently a logician and mathematician of international repute, worked from 1805-1819 as a theological professor at the Prague University. This post he received immediately after he ended his mathematics and theology studies. In this period he had already published his first scientific study
