The desire for philosophy
Interview with Judith Butler, the American philosopher, during her visit to in Berlin, in May 2001, invited by the American Academy. The interview was conducted by Regina Michalik (LOLApress) Judith, you call yourself a feminist - how do you identify your work? Do you see making philosophy as part of the feminist movement? Is it just your job? Or is it political?
I have always been very worried about hops of feminism who are highly regulative or repressive towards. I am against normativities and for sexual freedom. I always hated this saying that feminism is the theory and lesbianism must be the practice. It desexualizes lesbians. I became a lesbian at the age of fourteen. And I didn't know anything about politics. I became a lesbian as I wanted somebody very deeply. And then I became political about it, but as a result. I hate the saying as I believe that bisexual and heterosexual women within the feminist movement have to be respected, with their desires.
You are a protagonist of the queer movement* and see it as radically democratic and sexually progressive.

Metaphysics of Feminism:
A Critical Note on Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble What is it about that incoherent discursive mess precariously held together by a cobweb of authorial and often authoritative names, and called feminist theory, that exercises such an appeal for countless women and even the odd man? Apparently, it is the promise of the “subversion” of “phallogocentric” “discourse” and “practices” that constitute and “construct” sexuality, and thus the promise of the “liberation” of “desire” and “identity” from “masculinist” shackles. All the quotation marks here mark terms that play a prominent part in Judith Butler’s influential book on Feminism and the Subversion of Identity . The deployment of words such as “subversion” and “desire” by feminist theory could not have been done more skilfully by an advertising agency commissioned to design a campaign for a new perfume, albeit that the promise of liberation is supposed to be situated beyond the seductive allures of consumerist “signifying practices”. To be sure, in common with many other feminist writers, Butler’s endeavour is that of the subversion of “matrices of cultural intelligibility that govern gendered life” (p.41). A prominent position is assumed in feminist theory, and in Butler’s book in particular, by the phrase “metaphysics of substance”. Butler and others claim to put a critical distance between their own thinking and the traditional, purportedly phallological, and therefore, oppressive discourse of metaphysics, which is accused of being “naturalizing” and “ahistorical” and, along with that, of erecting an “ontology of substances” (p.25). What does Butler understand by a “metaphysics of substance” and why is such metaphysics to be put at arm’s length? And does Butler’s alternative proposal at all elude the metaphysics of substance? To start with the answers to these questions, let us turn to Section V of the first chapter, Identity, Sex, and the Metaphysics of Substance.

http://xroads.virginia.edu/~MA01/Cober/mathesis/nussbaum.html
Martha Nussbaum
Some criticism shows concerns similar to the ones I present throughout this website. In her article "The Professor of Parody," Martha Nussbaum attacks the writings of Judith Butler on two levels that are important to my argument. She argues, first, that Judith Butler utilizes professional jargon to make her work appear novel, despite the similar work that came before it. Second, she states that Butler's work reveals a disengagement from the non-academic world. Her first type of attack concerns Butler's use of language, and while she does not argue exactly along the same lines that I The real danger of Butler's work, Nussbaum continues, is its distance from lived experience. She writes, "The great tragedy in the new feminist theory in America is the loss of a sense of public commitment.... Hungry women are not fed by this, battered women are not sheltered by it, raped women do not find justice in it, gays and lesbians do not achieve legal protections through it." Butler's work, then, demonstrates a removal of scholarship from context. I am not suggesting that Judith Butler has not thought about her individual context. Certainly her awareness of her gender and sexual preference have influenced her thought, but she is detached (at least in Nussbaum's terms) from her relation to her society. I do argue that Butler does not constructively draw on the actual situation around her. In some instances, this problem may simply be academical, but here it displays a failure to be culturally significant.

Have you guys read the exchange between Judith Butler ("Merely Cultural")
and Nancy Fraser ("Heterosexism, Misrecognition and Capitalism: A Response
(Fall/Winter 1997)? When Doug posted on the exchange, on lbo-talk and other
lists, only the question of 'what is left conservatism?' got addressed.
However, their essays pose what seems to me to be equally (if not more)
important questions: what is the nature of heterosexism? How is it linked
to capitalism? How do we 'synergize' struggles for anti-heterosexism and
socialism?
To clarify the common ground between Butler and Fraser, both argue for the importance of fighting both capitalism and heterosexism. Both are critical of the left conservative drift. For instance, Butler writes: the United States today, the expression 'identity politics' is increasingly used as a derogatory term for feminism, anti-racism, and anti-heterosexism.

http://www.lawrence.edu/dept/english/courses/60a/handouts/digest8a.html
STUDENTS' RESPONSES TO JUDITH BUTLER Butler resembles Foucault in her insistence on the political nature of EVERYTHING! At the same time, he seems to contradict herself when she says that she is tired of being queer, which I read as being tired of being on the political soapbox. In that situation, you get to be like one of those pull-string toys that utters a certain variety of phrases, you write a best-seller and get booked on conferences and on Oprah . . . Butler also seems to be trying to reconcile the dilemma touched on by Foucault: How do we bring theory and practice together? Is it at all possible? (Julie Wroblewski) I was fascinated by Butler's idea that gender is "a kind of imitation for which there is no original," and her claim that our conception of the "original" depends on there being an imitation (kind of like Derrida's father and son?) (Julie Wroblewski) Butler's approach is fundamentally that of deconstruction . . . She is stuck with a kind of double bind, because she sees (and feels) the necessity of giving as yet accepted gender categories a viable political position, while also seeing the many ways that those categories can reinforce the "original" category it is trying to define itself against . . . For Butler, drag is like the pharmakon or Theuthit is a kind of indiscriminate medium, the unpole between poles, which plays at being one or the other, or neither or both, but above all never couches in any "sure" attire for more than a masked-moment. (Seth Warren)

Gide is a French writer, born in 1869, whose most famous works are novels: The Immoralist (1902), and The Counterfeiters (1926). Gide also wrote a book called Corydon (1924), in which he argued that homosexuality is neither harmful nor unnatural. When Corydon was attacked, he responded in another book, called

Kinship Between Life and Death
Judith Butler The Nation The Imaginary Domain: Abortion, Pornography, and Sexual Harassment Children of Silence: On Contemporary Fiction The celebrated author of Gender Trouble Oedipus, has long been a feminist icon of defiance. But what has remained unclear is whether she escapes from the forms of power that she opposes. Antigone proves to be a more ambivalent figure for feminism than has been acknowledged, since the form of defiance she exemplifies also leads to her death. Butler argues that Antigone represents a form of feminist and sexual agency that is fraught with risk. Moreover, Antigone shows how the constraints of normative kinship unfairly decide what will and will not be a livable life. Contents 2. Unwritten Laws, Aberrant Transmissions 3.
