Helene Cixous: "The Laugh of the Medusa"
NOTE:
In Anglo-American academic discussion, it is common to refer to Helene Cixous, Luce Irigaray, Julia Kristeva, and others as "the French feminists." This terminology assumes that somehow these theorists represent or speak for ALL feminists who are French, thus silencing the voices and ideas of other feminists who are French, such as Christine Delphy, Elisabeth Badinter, Francoise Picq, Benoite Grould, Genevieve Fraisse, Giselle Halimi, and many others. To avoid the imperialism inherent in the Anglo-American construction of Cixous, Irigaray, and Kristeva as "the French feminists," I will refer to these theorists as "poststructuralist theoretical feminists."
My thanks to Stephanie Cordellier for her lucid email comments and corrections regarding the politics of labeling on this issue.
For an updated and revised version of this lecture, see Poststructuralist Feminist Theory: Helene Cixous or the home page for English 2010, Fall Semester 2001 You've probably noticed a difference between what Sandra Gilbert is saying in her essay "Literary Paternity" and what Helene Cixous and Luce Irigaray are talking about in "The Laugh of the Medusa" and "This Sex Which is Not One." Part of that difference lies in the fact that Gilbert is a pragmatic feminist coming largely out of a humanist tradition as a literary critic, and Cixous and Irigaray are poststructuralist theoretical feminists. They represent two distinct (different but related) branches of contemporary feminist theory.

http://www.english.udel.edu/josephk/temp/cix.html
Helene Cixous's "Sorties" both engages and subverts the chain of hierarchized dichotomies she identifies as ever-present in the logocentric and phallocentric discourse of "the thinkable" (91). Beginning with the question "Where is she?" , Cixous presents a list of traditional binary oppositions, locating within the pattern of their disclosure the subordination of "woman." Based perhaps most clearly upon the philosophical positioning of the "feminine" on the side of passivity, her list relates the privileging in all discourse of one side of the dichotomous slash , equating the production of meaning or significationat least under the phallogocentric modelwith the violence of warring, destructive signifiers. The result she writes is always "either the woman is passive or she doesn't exist" ("Sorties" 92). Within phallogocentric discourse, then, passivity and femininity become equivalent signifiers linked to an infinite chain of subordinate terms. Each is the source of meaning for its dominant opposite, yet each is without the power to signify.
In "The Laugh of the Medusa," this becomes even more evident as Cixous explicitly states "there has not yet been any writing that inscribes femininity" (248). Developing her interrogation of the phallogocentric order, Cixous evidences the impossibility of

    Poststructuralist Feminist Theory
"The Laugh of the Medusa" Helene Cixous
These are themes very similar to those taken up by the poststructuralist feminist theorists, particularly Helene Cixous and Luce Irigaray.
Let's start looking at poststructuralist feminist literary theory (or theories of writing and language) by looking at Alice Jardine's "Gynesis." Published in 1982, this article worked to explain poststructuralist feminist thought to an American audience of academics and feminists who were almost completely unfamiliar with the ideas she was presentingso Jardine provides a good introduction to poststructuralist ideas in general. Her article starts out by talking about developments in Paris intellectual circles in the late 1960s and early 1970s.. She points out that "french feminism," as she calls it, wasn't like American "women's liberation," in that it wasn't a separatist movement, one favoring women and excluding or vilifying men. Rather, "french feminism" (or what we will call "poststructuralist feminist theory") emerges from women theorists who are direct disciples of male poststructuralist theorists, including Derrida, Lacan, Foucault, and Althusser.
While Anglo-American feminist literary critics in the early 1980s were focusing on creating analyses and critiques of fictional representations of women in men's and women's writings, these poststructuralist feminist theorists were studying how gender was created and/or destabilized within the structure of language itself, following Lacan; they examined how subject positions were gendered as "Man" or "Woman," masculine or feminine, rather than looking at individual gendered beings and how they were portrayed in literature.

But it would be misleading to look only at her influence on literary criticism. While Cixous continues to write essays, novels, and plays, her recent works for the theater have become increasingly concerned with ethical and political questions in contemporary history, especially the effects of colonialism, corruption, and social injustice. , the first of its kind in Europe, and directs doctoral programs both in English literature and in the Centre . Hélène Cixous (Twayne's World Author Series, No 860) by Lynn Kettler Penrod In this highly accessible introduction to a most complicated writer, Lynn Penrod attempts to remove the barrier to Cixous's works for the English-speaking reader - a barrier that derives from basic problems of translation and from major theoretical shifts in literary studies over the past 20 years. Penrod presents Cixous as a writer exemplifying an extraordinarily rich vein of women's writing in contemporary France - from her academic work centering on James Joyce , her copious essays on philosophy and theory, and her now-classic essays on ecriture feminine to her novels, stories, "fictions," and dramatic works. With its delight in wordplay and punning, the playfulness of its language, and its characteristic poetic style, Cixous's work, Penrod contends, provides an opportunity for exploring language in its purest form...
