is a concern to generate effects, to open up the philosophical terrain so that it might continue to be the site of creativity and invention. The notion of difference, or différance Différance différer Différance spoken by the members of the linguistic community. Writing for Saussure is even a deformation of language in the sense that it is (through grammar) taken to be a true representation of it, whereas, in fact, the essence of language is only contained, Saussure claimed, in living speech, which is always changing. Derrida interrogates this distinction. As with difference, he notices that both Saussure and the structuralists (cf. Lévi-Strauss) operate with a colloquial notion of writing, one that attempts to evacuate all complexities. Thus writing is assumed to be purely graphic, an aid to memory perhaps, but secondary to speech; it is deemed to be fundamentally phonetic, and so represents the sounds of language. Speech, for its part, is assumed to be closer to thought, and thus to the emotions, ideas, and intentions of the speaker. Speech as primary and more original thus contrasts with the secondary, representative status of writing. Derrida, the grammalogist (theorist of writing), endeavours to show that this distinction is unsustainable. The very term

Derrida, Jacques
The difficulty of introducing a major contemporary philosopher such as Jacques Derrida (b. 1930) in a reference work presenting central issues of literary criticism is double, and this danger, this hesitation on the threshold, has already been systematically thematized in the writings of the philosopher himself. First, there is the danger of oversimplifying, of pigeonholing, of reducing, of defining artificial boundaries, when facing a movement of thought that constantly evolves so as deliberately to defeat and baffle all preordained categories. Then, there is the danger of being merely mimetic, of just repeating strategies and gestures that have been identified with a signature, with an author (and may well have been anticipated by other writers), and that tend to be singular, unrepeatable, yet endowed with universal validity. However, the possibility of bypassing such an initial aporia exists, and it consists in considering the fundamentally affirmative nature of Derrida's thought and writing rather than in stressing the "playful" or "negative" element of his textual practices.
This affirmative aspect seems to be confirmed by the more recent writings of the philosopher, who has engaged with new fields such as law, ethics, politics, architecture, and teaching as an institution, while moving some distance from the early misconceptions brought about by a very enthusiastic reception of his theses in some North American universities in the late 1970s. Derrida has strongly objected to the interpretations of

Q.: "An interview with Derrida? At last maybe we're going to understand something about him!" That's what some people said when I announced I was preparing this work with you. It is said your texts are difficult, on the limit of readability. Some potential readers are discouraged in advance by this reputation. How do you live with that? Is it an effect you are seeking to produce or, on the contrary, do you suffer from it?

That is, if one prefers, of taking them out of childhood, of forgetting about the child, or, inversely, but by the same token, of speaking first and foremost for Dissemination Jacques Derrida is indeed a most profound thinker of matters educational, addressing in highly provocative and original ways through, more or less, "unconventional" readings of the history of Western metaphysics, some of the most basic philosophical questions of teaching and of learning. Michel Foucault and Edward Said have suggested—albeit in derisive ways—that deconstruction is perhaps nothing else but the elaborate expression of a new didactics, a poststructural pedagogy of the text. And yet, on the one hand, to say Derrida presents the means to a "method" of teaching

Introduction to Hegel's semiology
Since real difference belongs to the extremes, this mean ( Mitte ) is but an abstract neutrality, their real possibility, the as it were theoretical element of the existence, process, and results of chemical objects. In the corporeal element water has this function of being medium; in the spiritual element, in so far as there is an analogon of such a relationship in it, we must seek this function on the side of signs in general, and more precisely ( ) in language. [ Science of Logic In the Encyclopaedia (§ 458) Hegel regrets that in general 'signs and language are introduced as an appendix in psychology, or even in logic, without any reflection on their necessity and their enchainment in the system of the activity of the understanding'. For the moment let us see here the indication or the incitation to recognise that the essential place of semiology is at the centre, not on the margin or as an appendix to Logic. In determining Being as presence (presence of the present being [ ] in the form of an object, or self-presence of the present being in the form of self-consciousness), metaphysics could only consider the

Paper $11.00 0-226-14306-6 Spring 1996 The Gift of Death is Jacques Derrida's most sustained consideration of religion to date. While continuing to explore questions introduced in Given Time such as the possibility, or impossibility, of giving and the economic and anthropological nature of gifts, Derrida turns to the notion of responsibility and the ultimate gifts of life and death. Derrida divides the book into four parts, which deal respectively with the development of the notion of responsibility in the Platonic and Christian traditions; the relation between sacrifice and mortality; the contemporary meaning of the story of Abraham and Isaac; and the relation between religious ideology and economic rationality, explicitly linking this book with Given Time . The texts under discussion include the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, as well as writings from Patocka, Heidegger, Levinas, and Kierkegaard (whom he addresses here for the first time in print.)

Derrida, Jacques The Work of Mourning . Edited by Pascale-Anne Brault and Michael Naas. Translated by Pascale-Anne Brault and Michael Naas. 270 p. 2001, 2003 Cloth $25.00sp 0-226-14316-3 Spring 2001 One must go before the other. This inevitability bestows upon the mourner of a friend a further inevitabilityto say something and to participate in the codes and rites of mourning. The distinguished French philosopher Jacques Derrida has, like all of us, been forced to wrestle with the complexities of mourning, as his friends and colleagues have passed away before him. Gathered here are textsletters of condolence, memorial essays, eulogies, funeral orationswritten after the deaths of figures well known in France and in the United States: Roland Barthes, Paul de Man, Michel Foucault, Louis Althusser, Edmond Jabès, Louis Marin, Sarah Kofman, Gilles Deleuze, Emmanuel Levinas, and Jean-François Lyotard, as well as Max Loreau, Jean-Marie Benoist, Joseph Riddel, and Michel Servière. Many of the essays are available in English for the first time, and one, on Lyotard, has never been published before. Each chapter includes an introduction, as well as a biographical sketch of its subject. With his words, Derrida bears witness to the singularity of a friendship and to the absolute uniqueness of each relationship. In each case, he is acutely aware of the questions of tact, taste, and ethical responsibility involved in speaking of the deadthe risks of using the occasion for one's own purposes, political calculation, personal vendetta, and the expiation of guilt. More than a collection of memorial addresses, this volume sheds light not only on Derrida's relation to some of the most prominent French thinkers of the past quarter century but also on some of the most important themes of Derrida's entire oeuvremourning, the "gift of death," time, memory, and friendship itself.

Jacques Derrida general sources primary literature secondary literature Introduction to Jacques Derrida by Roger Geertz Gonzalez When discussing contemporary cultural theory such as structuralism, postructuralism, postmodernism, postcolonialism, feminist theory, and cultural studies, you will most likely encounter a common, foundational lexicon. This includes words such as "trace," "presence," "difference," "deconstruction," "logos," and "play." Their birth took place with the publication of Jacques Derrida's Of Grammatology In Of Grammatology , Derrida analyzes and criticizes Western Philosophy beginning with the pre-Socratics to Heidegger and beyond. His fundamental criticism of Western Philosophy is that it privileges or favors "logos," or speech. According to him, logos claim and pretend to exhibit a direct form of language and therefore, a tight closeness to a specific "presence" or center of identity/subjectivity. Western Philosophy while praising logos, debases "writing." Ironically, these philosophers try to imprint writing with logos patterns. Thus, writing or "texts" claims and pretends to exhibit a presence of identity/subjectivity, a presence of authority, and a presence of power.
